Olathe, Kansas, United States - The Church of the Resurrection West - enote from Reverend Jason Gant for Friday, 7 March 2014
Resurrection West,
The season of Lent is here. What a wonderful time of worship this past Wednesday evening at our Ash Wednesday service! We had over 350 people in worship with every generation represented. Thank you to the many volunteers who helped to make this a special worship opportunity for our community. I invite you to join me in this season of remembrance and reflection through fasting from something and/or taking something on to further our walk together with Christ as we approach Holy week and Easter weekend!
You might consider some of the Lenten options below to "take on" in this season:
•Reading the Gospel of Luke - We will read together Luke's Gospel along with Pastor Adam's series beginning this Sunday. You can receive the GPS devotional via email, text, or through the smart phone app by clicking here. cor.org/ministries/gps-guide
•Serve at Faithwork this Saturday - Serve our community through this Saturday's Faithwork. Tomorrow morning, March 8th, adults, students and children of all ages are invited to serve God by serving those in need at FaithWork. We will meet in the Resurrection West sanctuary at 9am for project sign-up, breakfast snacks and prayer. Then, one group will stay on-site to work on a variety of family-friendly mission projects including making no-sew blankets, bagging sack lunches for those in need, and creating plastic mats for the homeless. We will also show the movie "Despicable Me 2" while we are working. A second group will travel to the Mary L Kelly Community Center (2803 E 51st Street, KCMO) and help assemble Spring Break Brain Booster bags that will be distributed to children in our Resurrection partner schools. (Please note that Waterstone Apartments needed to cancel this month's painting project, so we will not send a group there this time.) For more information, contact Pastor Chris at chris.holliday@rezwest.org.
•Son of God movie - Next Tuesday evening, March 11th, we go to Olathe AMC 30 joining our regional campuses. Tickets are available in worship this Sunday following each service. Cost is $6.50
•Camp-out and work day - March 21-22 - Join your Church family for a fun evening camping out on the Church property (including a kid-friendly movie showing in the Sanctuary, campfire, and s'mores). Stay or join us for a Saturday morning workday to develop a prayer/nature/exercise trail around the property. For more information and to volunteer email Travis Morgan at travis.morgan@rezwest.org
•Journey 101: Knowing God - Explore what it means to develop a personal relationship with God. Beginning Monday, April 7th, this six-week course meets 6:30-8 pm. Childcare is available. For more information and to register, go to rezwest.org/journey.
Remember to spring forward setting your clocks forward one hour this Saturday evening for daylight savings!
Pastor Adam begins a new series this Sunday in worship - The Gospel of the Nobodies. Many of us at some point have felt like a nobody - insignificant, invisible, worthless. The Gospel of Luke has much to teach us about ministering to those who are considered nobodies. Beginning Sunday, we'll turn our attention to specific stories that illustrate Jesus' concern for those who were marginalized by society, and as we do, we'll hear His word for our lives today. Join us for - The Gospel of the Nobodies.
There is still time to sign up to participate in the Men's Retreat beginning at the Leawood campus - Refocus your heart, mind and energy on God's plan for your life. Guest presenter James Bryan Smith will share ideas from his Good and Beautiful series. Friday, March 7, 6:30-9 pm, and Saturday, March 8, 8:30 am-noon, Leawood Student Center. Visit cor.org/mens
Mark your calendars and invite your friends, family, and neighbors to join us for the Resurrection West Easter Egg Hunt - Saturday April 19th 3:00-5:15 pm, followed by a 5:30 pm Easter worship service (the first of five Easter worship celebrations over the weekend; Sunday 8 am, 9:30 am, 11:15 am, 5:00 pm). We will host a variety of fun, kid-friendly activities, beginning in the sanctuary with a children's message, musical entertainment and a light lunch of sandwiches, chips and drinks. Then join us for games, activities, crafts and, of course, the egg hunt! We hope you will stay for the Saturday evening Easter worship service at 5:30 pm. If you would like to help us prepare for this event, please consider donating items listed below. We are counting on lots of kids attending our event, so we will need lots of treats! Please bring your donations to the Theater room in the lower level by Monday, April 14.
•Plastic eggs
•Variety of candy to stuff plastic eggs-no chocolate please!
•Variety of single serving cans of pop
•Full-size candy bars for games
If you would like to volunteer to help with the April 19 activities, contact Vicki.holdman@rezwest.org.
I am excited to share that we are in the planning stages of launching a Matthew's ministry "family night out" event. Matthew's ministry is our ministry to children, students, and adults with special needs. Currently we offer "angel care providers" as a ministry that serves Matthew's ministry participants one on one during our worship services. This is an exciting new step to support families with special needs. Our first event will be to go together to the Leawood campus "family night out" and learn from our amazing Matthew's team at Leawood how to run the event with excellence. Afterward we will then go out and share a meal together debriefing and planning our own event. The Leawood family night out our team will be going to is on Saturday, April 26th. More details to come. Email me if you are interested in being on this team, serving at an upcoming event, or being served by this ministry. Jason.gant@rezwest.org
Finally, my family and I are excited that so many of you are considering the Estes Park summer vacation trip with us (June 2-5, come days earlier or stay days later)! Here are a few pics from our last time in Estes Park at the YMCA of the Rockies
Come enjoy some of God's most beautiful work in the mountains of Colorado and some great family time at the YMCA in Estes Park. We will join together each morning for worship (Mon-Thurs) and a campfire Thursday evening. Additional activities are your choice, with many to choose from. Arrangements for transportation, booking rooms, activities, lunch and dinner are up to you. The room cost varies according to household size, ranging from $107 - $179 per night, and includes a hot buffet-style breakfast each morning. We have ten rooms blocked (rooms sleep up to six) and will add rooms if needed. A $100 fee per household covers a devotional booklet and t-shirt for each family member, pastor expenses and supplies needed for worship. Online registration is now open at rezwest.org/summertrip. Please begin here so we know you are coming, then contact the YMCA at 1-888-613-9622 to book your housing. Tell the registration line that you want to book in the UMC of the Resurrection West room block - Group # 451405. More information available at rezwest.org/summertrip
