Reflecting God – Embrace Holy Living - “God’s Wisdom Nourishes – Tuesday, 11 March 2014
Scripture: Proverbs 3: 1 My son, don’t forget my teaching;
    but let your heart keep my commandments:
2 for length of days, and years of life,
    and peace, will they add to you.
3 Don’t let kindness and truth forsake you.
    Bind them around your neck.
    Write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 So you will find favor,
    and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
5 Trust in Yahweh with all your heart,
    and don’t lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will make your paths straight.
7 Don’t be wise in your own eyes.
    Fear Yahweh, and depart from evil.
8 It will be health to your body,
    and nourishment to your bones.
9 Honor Yahweh with your substance,
    with the first fruits of all your increase:
10 so your barns will be filled with plenty,
    and your vats will overflow with new wine.
“God’s Wisdom Nourishes” by Judith A. Schwanz
When I was ten years old, my grandparents gave me a new Bible for Christmas. On the first page, in his strong script, my grandfather wrote “Proverbs 3:6.” He didn’t write out the verse because he wanted me to have to look it up and memorize it. This reminder to trust in the Lord with all my heart summed up years’ worth of lessons my wise Poppop tried to instill in me.
I have heard it said that true wisdom is: “Knowing that you don’t know.” Proverbs 16:18 cautions us that often pride leads to a fall. When we think we know it all we can become blinded by our own “wisdom” which can lead to overconfidence and harmful results.
The truly wise person will fear God. This fear is not trembling terror, but a respect for and acknowledgement of God’s power, holiness and greatness. To fear God signals that we acknowledge our human limitations and our dependence upon God. A posture of fear of God will lead us to shun evil.
The Teacher of Proverbs assured that trusting in God would lead to health, well-being and provision. This is the message my Poppop desired for me to learn as well.
Hymn for Today:
“Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise” by Walter Chalmers Smith
1.  Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
    in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
    most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
    almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.
2.  Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
    nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
    thy justice like mountains high soaring above
    thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.
3.  To all, life thou givest, to both great and small;
    in all life thou livest, the true life of all;
    we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
    and wither and perish, but naught changeth thee.
4.  Thou reignest in glory; thou dwellest in light;
    thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
    all laud we would render:  O help us to see
    'tis only the splendor of light hideth thee.
