Reflecting God – Embrace Holy Living - “Having A Teachable Spirit” –Saturday, 8 March 2014
Scripture: Proverbs 11: 1 A false balance is an abomination to Yahweh,
but accurate weights are his delight.
2 When pride comes, then comes shame,
    but with humility comes wisdom.
3 The integrity of the upright shall guide them,
but the perverseness of the treacherous shall destroy them.
4 Riches don’t profit in the day of wrath,
    but righteousness delivers from death.
5 The righteousness of the blameless will direct his way,
but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.
6 The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them,
but the unfaithful will be trapped by evil desires.
7 When a wicked man dies, hope perishes,
and expectation of power comes to nothing.
8 A righteous person is delivered out of trouble,
and the wicked takes his place.
9 With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor,
but the righteous will be delivered through knowledge.
10 When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices.
When the wicked perish, there is shouting.
11 By the blessing of the upright, the city is exalted,
but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
12 One who despises his neighbor is void of wisdom,
but a man of understanding holds his peace.
13 One who brings gossip betrays a confidence,
but one who is of a trustworthy spirit is one who keeps a secret.
“Having A Teachable Spirit” by Michael Paugh
One of the countless joys I’ve had while being a Salvation Army Officer was when I was stationed at the Training School for five years. During that time he was able to witness the work of God in the lives of the many individuals who came to training. There were some of these individuals who came with a prideful spirit. They seemed to think that they knew everything. The Book of Proverbs points out that kind of pride inevitably leads to disgrace. Humility is the true path to wisdom.
At the beginning of Proverbs, the author addresses his son. He says time and again, “Listen my son to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching” (Proverbs 1:8). How true is this for us today? Our heavenly Father has much to teach us, but we cannot receive His instruction until we humbly come to the throne of grace, the place of humble prayer.
Today, let’s receive one of our heavenly Father’s greatest gifts, a teachable spirit; this will bring wisdom from the Father.
Hymn for Today:
“Teach Me Thy Way, O Lord” by B. Mansell Ramsey
1. Teach me Thy way, O Lord, teach me Thy way!
Thy guiding grace afford--teach me Thy way!
Help me to walk aright, more by faith, less by sight;
Lead me with heav’nly light, teach me Thy way!
2. When I am sad at heart, teach me Thy way!
When earthly joys depart, teach me Thy way!
In hours of loneliness, in times of dire distress,
In failure or success, teach me Thy way!
3. When doubts and fears arise, teach me Thy way!
When storms o'erspread the skies, teach me Thy way!
Shine through the cloud and rain, thro' sorrow, toil and pain;
Make thou my pathway plain, teach me Thy way!
4. Long as my life shall last, teach me Thy way!
Where’er my lot be cast, teach me Thy way!
Until the race is run, until the journey’s done,
Until the crown is won, teach me Thy way!
Thought for Today:
“We have not known thee as we ought, nor learned Thy wisdom, grace, and power. . .Lord, give us light Thy truth to see, and make us wise in knowing Thee” (Thomas Benson Pollock).
Prayer Needs:
Many people in Fiji will come to know Jesus the Christ (Yeshua the Messiah) and receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit.
