Sunday, March 23, we will begin Part III of Spong's book. Part III is entitled The Farewell Discourses and the High Priestly Prayer. Chapter 17, page 166, Peter and the Commandment to Love.
In addition to carefully reading this chapter, I suggest Googling "The Catholic Encyclopedia: Domitian." Domitian was emperor of the Roman Empire 81 to 96 AD, during the time of writing the fourth gospel, the book of revelation and at least the Epistle of John I. Domitian was the first emperor to declare himself God. Picture how Jews, including Christians would react, and results of that reaction.
1. Find your best dictionary and thesaurus. Look up mystic and mysticism. Choose your favorite definition and explain to class. (See question 6 below).
2. P. 165. Why did Jesus "turn away from the crowds and toward his own disciples?" See last sentence on page 166.
3. Bottom half of p. 166. What are the issues facing the Johannine community? Which issues applied to all Jews? To all residents of the Roman empire?
4. Bottom par. p. 169. 65 to 70 years after the crucifixion of Jesus, how did the new awareness, the new consciousness John has Jesus talking about fulfill Messiah expectations?
5. pp. 170-171. Why is Judas so important in the gospels? And today?
6. Top of page 172. "The human and the divine are not two separate realms....." Do you think that only mystics can understand this? Or does understanding this make one a mystic?
