San Diego First United Methodist Church enote from The Water's Edge Congregation for Friday, March 2014 "Tempted!"
The Water's Edge Congregation is a modern, inter-generational service at First United Methodist Church in Mission Valley, San Diego. We meet in the "Cove" (directions) Sundays, 9:30 AM under the leadership of Pastor Elbert Kim and the Water's Edge band, led by Chris Durrand.
"Tempted!"
We enter the season of Lent, the forty-day journey preparing ourselves for what is to come on Easter Sunday, the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We began the season with Ash Wednesday this past week and for the next six weeks, we'll wait with anticipation and yearn for Easter to come.
But the days leading up to Easter are not easy. Forty is a significant number: for 40 days and nights it rained during the days of Noah; for 40 years the Israelites wandered in the wilderness; in 40 days, Jonah warned Nineveh that they would be destroyed unless they repented; and for 40 days, Jesus spent in the desert being tempted by Satan.
Tempted! What are your thoughts of temptations? What tempts you at night? What temptations make you stumble during the day? Our Lenten journey begins with us looking at the story of Jesus' temptations in the Bible. Through his temptations, Jesus faced the very nature of struggle that we all face in our daily living. But whereas we often give into our temptations, Jesus overcame them and through his victory, we learn what it takes to be strong in our faith.
Come and join in worship this week as we see how to follow Jesus in overcoming the temptations of our lives. Let us journey together through this season of Lent.
Blessings,
Pastor Elbert
