Stephen M. Miller - Rezchat Bible Study News for Friday, 7 March 2014 - Weekly newsletter of the RezChat Bible Study, Church of the Resurrection West, Olathe KS
Hi, RezChat
So this is the first weekend in three weeks that I'm not dogsitting an extra dog. It's just me and Buddy the Dog.
Note to Linda who is out shopping on her day off: Buddy and I did our part, embedding our muddy paw prints and footprints into the carpet downstairs and upstairs. I am so glad I bought you a vacuum cleaner.
  Hurry home.

Sunday's session:
'Why' questions for God
We're starting a three-week series that deals with tough questions for God.
Here are the three questions we will be tackling during the next three Sundays:
•Why should we believe in You when You're a no-show?
•Why don't you prove there's life after death?
•Why don't you cure Tim of MS?
Jim Buffington gets us started with the first question. I'll list below the Bible passages that are tagged for this discussion. But if I know Jim, there might be one or two more.
And by one or two, I mean half a dozen.
Exodus 3:1-6
Moses and the Burning Bush
One day Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock far into the wilderness and came to Sinai, the mountain of God. 2 There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush. Moses stared in amazement. Though the bush was engulfed in flames, it didn’t burn up. 3 “This is amazing,” Moses said to himself. “Why isn’t that bush burning up? I must go see it.”
4 When the Lord saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, “Moses! Moses!”
“Here I am!” Moses replied.
5 “Do not come any closer,” the Lord warned. “Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground. 6 I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” When Moses heard this, he covered his face because he was afraid to look at God.
Colossians 1:15-16
Christ Is Supreme
15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.
He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,
16 for through him God created everything
in the heavenly realms and on earth.
He made the things we can see
and the things we can’t see—
such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.
Everything was created through him and for him.
Romans 1:19-20
19 They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. 20 For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.
Central UM church: in the morning
Our class will be fixing and serving lunch at Central United Methodist Church tomorrow.
The main course will come from the Rock House, funded by our class treasury.
We need warm bodies to serve the food. And we need the warm bodies to bring dessert to add to the meal.
Linda tells me we also need you to bring plastic grocery bags for the lunches-to-go. And she told me to remind you to bring any of the supplies you had signed up to bring – stuff like towels and that sort of thing. I think these are supplies that stay with the church, and we carry them to and from the mission projects.
We generally meet at the downtown church to set up between 9:30-10 a.m.
Here's the address: 933 Argentine Blvd, Kansas City, KS.
   See you there.
Second Sunday Social: TBA
Linda said she will talk with the group that meets tomorrow at Central United Methodist Church to chat about whether or not we should do the Second Sunday Social on the heels of this Saturday mission event.
I think one option is to eat together after we serve lunch to the group, assuming we don't end up eating with the group. Or we can go ahead and have pizza or something ordered for the class after church on Sunday. Or we can put a comma in this until the next month.
Team signup: Sunday
We had planned on Sunday to invite the class to volunteer to help on any of the RezChat teams that might interest them. But we did not quite manage a quorum, given the snowstorm. High praise to the Tranbargers and the Fitzherberts who risked their lives to hear me lead the discussion.
  I feel special.
We will give the sign-up another shot on Sunday.
Once again, here are the teams:
Class leader, Bill Fitzherbert
1.    Make sure all the team leaders are leading their teams and fulfilling their ministry responsibilities
2.    Look for people with leadership potential and give them leadership opportunities that will help prepare them for a leadership position in Sunday school or somewhere else in the church
3.    Arrange to send class e-mails updates about general class news and upcoming events
Curriculum team, Steve Miller and Cris Bahadur
[Cris volunteered to make sure we have session leaders each Sunday.]
1.    Create a curriculum track of lesson topics for 12 months
2.    Arrange for discussion leaders to direct each class session
3.    Survey the class at least once a year for evaluation and for ideas about how to make the sessions more meaningful
4.    Create an atmosphere that encourages everyone to participate in class
5.    Find ways to engage the interest of people
6.    Try to make sure everyone sees how the study topic applies to our lives today
Publicity team, Tim Edwards
1.    Create PowerPoint presentations to publicize the class (the slides are run before and after each worship service)
2.    Post signs to direct newcomers to the classroom
3.    Explore ways to make everyone in the church aware of the RezChat Bible study class
4.    Keep the RezChat promotional info on the church web site up to date
5.    Invite promotional ideas from others in the class
Hospitality team, Karen Fitzherbert
1.    Greet guests and introduce them to the class
2.    Fill out the attendance book
3.    Have first-time guest provide contact information
4.    Send first-time visitors a card or e-mail
5.    Contact class members who have been missing a week or two when no one knows why they have been absent
6.    Contact class members who have been missing for an extended time
Social/missions team, Linda Miller (social); Lisa and Dave Rock (missions)
1.    Plan regular socials, once every month or two
2.    Plan regular opportunities for the class to serve others
3.    Explore the possibility of a major mission trip for the class
4.    Find ways to help class members connect with each other
5.    Invite class members to suggest ideas for socials and ministry
Curriculum team: meets March 15
If any of you are interested in helping plan out the curriculum topics for the next year, we are going to be meeting at 10 AM, Saturday, March 15 at the home of Cris and Terry Bahadur, just a few miles north of the church. We will have doughnuts as a snack, and probably pizza for lunch.

While I was dictating this newsletter – it's faster than typing – Linda arrived home.
I do not hear the vacuum cleaner.
   Have a nice evening.
