    and bow myself before the exalted God?
Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,
    with calves a year old?
7 Will Yahweh be pleased with thousands of rams?
    With tens of thousands of rivers of oil?
Shall I give my firstborn for my disobedience?
    The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
8 He has shown you, O man, what is good.
    What does Yahweh require of you, but to act justly,
    to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?
What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.(Micah 6:8 (NIV))
These words from the prophet Micah serve as a reminder of what God requires of us. First, God wants us to do what is right — obeying both God’s laws and the laws of the land in which we live. Second, God requires that we love mercy, having compassion on others without judging them or their situation. Third, we are to walk humbly with God — putting our will aside and allowing God to lead the way. In the book of Genesis, we learn that we were created in God’s image. I often ask myself, “Am I reflecting God’s image today?” The words of Micah above are the gauge I use to monitor my actions. When I am in a position of authority, do I do what is right? If others offend me, do I forgive or do I hold on to the pain and wait for an opportunity to hurt them in return? Am I humble in my walk with God, allowing God to lead my steps, or do I rely only on my qualifications and contacts? Jesus sums up Micah’s message when he says that we are to love the Lord our God with all our hearts, all our souls and all our minds, and love our neighbors as ourselves. (See Matt. 22:34-40.)
