Trinity United Methodist Church Daily Scripture Devotion for Monday, 2 June 2014 "The Best of All, God is With Us"
Then The Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind (Job 38:1)
In his innermost being Job's greatest concern was not what had happened to him, but that God had abandoned him. And, truth be told, when tragedy or difficulty strikes us, that is our greatest fear as well. So, I view chapter 38 as the Mt. Everest of the Book of Job. God speaks to Job. In essence God is saying: I'm right here with you. It's the very same thing Paul says at the end of chapter 8 of the Book of Romans: "Can anything separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus? No!!! A thousand times No! I am persuaded that nothing - and here he gives a whole list of things - nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
Job was wondering: "I've lost everything, have I lost you, too, God?" And God's coming to him was a resounding "No!" I'm here, present with you.
When our kids were little and they would fall off their bike or trip and skin their knee, what do you think was the first thing they did? They looked for Jan, and then ran to her. They didn't really need an explanation as to why this "evil" had befallen them. No, what they wanted is what we all want: they wanted to know that Jan, their Mom, was there for them, that she would hold them, and in the being held, somehow all was again right with the world.
And so it is with us; we don't ultimately need an explanation for everything, but we do need an awareness of God's presence. And sometimes that comes directly in a spiritual encounter and sometimes it comes through a friend, through the Body of Christ, through a Stephen Minister, but the message is the same: Nothing can separate us from the love and presence of God! Amen
