Sunday's Scripture:
Matthew 22:34-46
Matthew 22: The Most Important Command
34-36 When the Pharisees heard how he had bested the Sadducees, they gathered their forces for an assault. One of their religion scholars spoke for them, posing a question they hoped would show him up: “Teacher, which command in God’s Law is the most important?”
37-40 Jesus said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence.’ This is the most important, the first on any list. But there is a second to set alongside it: ‘Love others as well as you love yourself.’ These two commands are pegs; everything in God’s Law and the Prophets hangs from them.”
David’s Son and Master
41-42 As the Pharisees were regrouping, Jesus caught them off balance with his own test question: “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said, “David’s son.”
43-45 Jesus replied, “Well, if the Christ is David’s son, how do you explain that David, under inspiration, named Christ his ‘Master’?
God said to my Master,
“Sit here at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool.”
“Now if David calls him ‘Master,’ how can he at the same time be his son?”
46 That stumped them, literalists that they were. Unwilling to risk losing face again in one of these public verbal exchanges, they quit asking questions for good.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary:
Matthew 22:34-46
Verse 34
[34] But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
Mark 12:28; Luke 10:25.
Verse 35
[35] Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
A scribe asking him a question, trying him — Not, as it seems, with any ill design: but barely to make a farther trial of that wisdom, which he had shown in silencing the Sadducees.
Verse 37
[37] Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Deuteronomy 6:5.
Verse 39
[39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Leviticus 19:18.
Verse 42
[42] Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
Luke 20:41.
Verse 43
[43] He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
How doth David then by the Spirit — By inspiration, call him Lord? If he be merely the son (or descendant) of David? If he be, as you suppose, a mere man, the son of a man?
Verse 44
[44] The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
The Lord said to my Lord — This his dominion, to which David himself was subject, shows both the heavenly majesty of the king, and the nature of his kingdom.
Sit thou on my right hand — That is, remain in the highest authority and power. Psalms 110:1.
Verse 46
[46] And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
Neither durst any question him any more — Not by way of ensnaring or tempting him.

Why I've Been Messing with our Worship
I've heard your frustrations, along with your enthusiasm, about changes in our Sunday worship.
I want to say a bit more about why I've been excited about the changes we've been making.
I believe that one of the greatest strengths of our congregation is the warm, caring spirit shared in our intergenerational community. I love watching the way older members of the church care about our youth, the beauty that young families find in a church community that includes extra "grandparents," and the friendships that connect us with people we might not otherwise know, except that we're "church" together. I feel a hunger in our time and culture for that connection across generations, and I'm delighted that it's something that feels so natural here.
It's one of the things I think church ought to be--but that doesn't always happen. I think it's a special gift we have, which we ought to honor and share.
It's this special gift that has motivated my sense of calling to combine our worship services. I hope our worship will reflect this rich gift--I believe that the best worship reflects the life of the congregation doing the worshiping. For this to happen, we have to be together--sitting side by side, and sharing together in prayer and at the communion table. Young and old and in-between, lovers of organ music and guitars and choirs and drums and pianos.
Music has such a beautiful power to shape our worship, but worship cannot be primarily about the music--it's a way that we connect to something bigger than ourselves, something words alone can't say. The familiar hymns our grandparents taught us can connect us to memories and feelings that are incredibly powerful. The fresh sound of contemporary music can elevate our spirits and connect our worship life to the life and music we share in our everyday. There is an amazing breadth of worship music from which we might choose our songs any Sunday, stretching through time and geography. Our task is to find ways of singing and worshiping that connect us to God and one another.
We are continuing to figure out the best ways to set our worship to music, so that it connects with everyone. But the center of worship can't be about doing what makes us most comfortable--we're drawn together by the powerful message of God's love. We gather at the table of Christ's grace, and we seek to be disciples of Christ together.
Never has this been as clearly visible to me as Confirmation Sunday this past June, when I was moved by the line of adult mentors standing alongside the young people who were professing their faith in Christ. The room was filled with the excitement and beauty of this kind of community.
All of which is to say that I want to ask for your help: will you help encourage and shape our worship to be both welcoming to others and meaningful to yourself? Will you be present, and invite others, too? We are a different (and more beautiful) church because of your presence in our midst.
grace and peace,

Check Into Church NOW!

The heart of Christian ministry is Christ's ministry of outreaching love. Through our baptism, we are called to express this love through acts of witness, service, celebration and discipleship. [Book Of Discipline,¶126]. To help us do this, the Membership Committee is asking you to Check into Church through this questionnaire. It'll only take a few minutes to complete and there's a fun "Bonus" question at the end! Be sure to stop by our booth during our Social Hour on Sunday so we can reward you for Checking Into Church!  If you want assistance completing the questionnaire, some of the committee members and staff will be available at this same time on Sunday to assist you.

Growing Deeper
Have you Checked into Church yet?
The staff and I were talking recently and wondering "what is it about church that helps us grow in our love for God?"  If Jesus says the greatest commandment of all is to love the Lord with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength, then how is church helping us to do that?  And, if we are not helping one another to grow in our love for God, then what do we need to be doing to start helping one another?
The church isn't just a building, it's made up of us and it's our presence that shapes church and shapes each one of us over time. Hopefully, every week you come to church, it feels good to be here.  Do you ever notice that there are certain weeks when..."

Growing Deeper by Johnna Kosnoff
Have you Checked into Church yet?
The staff and I were talking recently and wondering “what is it about church that helps us grow in our love for God?”  If Jesus says the greatest commandment of all is to love the Lord with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength, then how is church helping us to do that?  And, if we are not helping one another to grow in our love for God, then what do we need to be doing to start helping one another?
The church isn’t just a building, it’s made up of us and it’s our presence that shapes church and shapes each one of us over time.  Hopefully, every week you come to church, it feels good to be here.  Do you ever notice that there are certain weeks when you come to church, and it feels especially good to be here?  Some weeks there is a lot of energy when many people are singing together, praying together and fellowshipping on the patio or at a potluck with one another?  What I have come to realize over the past few years is that my presence and your presence contribute to this energy.  Believe it or not, when one of us is absent, our presence is missed; it just doesn’t feel the same. I know we all have busy lives and I’m certainly not trying to make anyone feel guilty for not attending every Sunday.  Instead, I want you to realize how important each one is to the body of First UMC Redondo Beach! I want you to know that when you or your children (and, hopefully, me and my children) are present, you are contributing to what the rest of us are experiencing. The music sounds better; conversations in children and adult Sunday school or bible study are livelier; and, time on the patio is a little more intimate when we are all present with one another.  YOU (and, yes, even the children) really matter to the life of this church and to who we each become over time.
Checking into Church helps us to put our gifts and passions to work for the church.  My hope is that it will also help us connect with others who have similar gifts and passions to help us grow in our relationships. Positive, strong relationships help us grow deeper in our love for God as we find Him in others and, as others help us find God in us. So, if you haven’t Checked into Church, I hope you will this week.  If you have, we’ll be in touch soon!
