Kansas City, Missouri, United States - The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Downtown An Enote from Pastor Scott Chrostek for Friday, 14 November 2014
Greetings RezDowntowners,
Sorry for the late eNote today, but I have been busy for most of the day and have just returned home from celebrating and remembering Jeff Flottman at a memorial service on our Leawood Campus.  Jeff was a committed leader within the Resurrection community and had a deep passion for transforming Kansas City by the grace of Jesus Christ!  He truly sought to love and serve others and he surely will be missed.
As we look ahead to this weekend, I am excited that we are going to have lots of activities and opportunities to love and serve others, so be sure to take a look at the entire eNote to see where you could get involved.  In addition to all that’s going on, I want to remind you that this weekend in worship we'll conclude our current sermon series on How Will You Measure Your Life?  As we conclude this series we’ll take a look at how Jesus defines greatness. This is going to be a message that pertains to everyone and it will surely have the power to redefine your life. So I want to encourage you to invite a friend and join us at any of our worship services this weekend (However, if you are able and willing I would love for you to try worshiping at either of our evening worship services (Saturday at 5:10pm or Sunday at 5:10pm!  This way you can help us to create space for more visitors during our morning hours.
Last weekend was our annual commitment weekend. I want to say thank you to all who returned your commitment cards so far. Your giving and generosity provides for the mission and ministry of our church. Without it Resurrection Downtown could not operate. It provides for our children, youth and adult ministries. It makes possible all of the pastoral care, the mission work, worship, discipleship, special needs ministry and everything else that happens weekly at Resurrection Downtown.  If you have yet to make your pledge, you can do so now by clicking on this link. If you make your pledge online or if you bring your pledge with you this week, please be sure to pick up your 2015 Coffee Mug as our thanks for returning your commitment card! And to all who have returned your cards, Thanks, again.
In the meantime, here are details on a variety of ways to get connected to the life of this church community:
The Power of Gratitude – Return your Commitment Cards This Weekend. Each year we have the opportunity to make a financial commitment to support Resurrection’s vision of changing lives, transforming communities and renewing the church. This annual commitment allows each of us to evaluate our giving, what it means and how much it can be for the coming year. It also helps our church to determine a more accurate budget for Resurrection’s ministries. Giving and commitment information will be mailed this week. Thank you for taking the time to pray about your giving. We invite you to return your commitment card during worship, by mail or online at cor.org/commitment
Bible Basics Class – New location! – Do you feel unnerved to use or even open the Bible? Do you ever wonder who wrote the Bible? Why are there so many different books within it? Join us this Saturday, Nov. 159 am – noon at 1508 Grand on the first floor to learn the basics: What is the Bible? Why are there so many translations!? This three-hour class will help you feel confident to open the Bible and begin to read, understand and study it on your faith journey. A $5 booklet is required, scholarships available. To register, go to rezdowntown.org/biblebasics. You can park on the street or in the McGee lot and walk over.  There should be plenty of free street parking. A very light breakfast will be available if you come hungry. No need to bring anything but a desire to learn a bit more about the Bible!! For more information, contact Kelly.Sisney@cor.org.
November Faithwork – Every 3rd Saturday of the month, RezDowntown sends out people to serve the community. Just show up at the church (1522 McGee) this Saturday, Nov. 15, at 9 am wearing clothes that can get dirty, and we will send you out to serve in the community until lunch time. We will be working on projects at places like the Healing House, supporting those on the journey of addiction recovery, and the Don Bosco Center, supporting immigrants, refugees, and senior citizens in KC. We will also have an on-site project for people who like to knit and an activity for kids to put together fall treats and then deliver them to those in need. It will be a huge day and you will want to be a part of it! Contact Pastor Todd (todd.maberry@cor.org)  with any questions.  Also, our BBQ Club will be heading to Smokehouse BBQ (6304 N Oak Trafficway Kansas City, MO 64118) afterward. If you love BBQ, plan to meet Pastor Todd around 12:30pm (after Faithwork).
The RezDT Coffee Shop is Opening Soon – Volunteers Needed! No experience required; training provided. We are looking for baristas and other hospitality roles. If you love coffee and people, then this is the spot for you! Training is this Saturday, Nov. 1510:30 am – 12:30 pm in the Coffee Shop at 1522 McGee. Rez DT MoMs Group! Join us Tuesday, Nov. 18from 6:30-8:30 pm, and discover ways to integrate faith into everyday activities with our children. Pastor Lisa Holliday, minister to children and their families at the Leawood Campus, will provide tips on how to focus on faith with our little ones. RezMOMs, mothers of early childhood and elementary school aged children, gathers monthly for an evening of fellowship and learning ways to care for our families and ourselves! We also have moms’ nights out and activities with our children and families. Bring a light snack if you have time, and friends are always welcome! Childcare is available. YUP’s + Pastor Todd = Mission Makeover! If you are a young adult 19-35ish, join the YUP’s (Young and UnProfessionals) on Wednesday, Nov. 19, for a mission-related discussion with Pastor Todd. What exactly do we mean when we say “mission”? What does it take to go on a mission trip? What mission opportunities are there within Kansas City? How can I serve other than Saturday morning FaithWork events? If you’ve asked these questions, if you have a passion for social justice, or if you just want to do something meaningful with your life, come learn more about mission opportunities everywhere from Honduras to Kansas City, and more specifically how to serve those within our Resurrection Downtown community. You will also hear from a fellow YUP about a recent mission experience in Africa. Bring a friend and join us at 7 pm in the Loft at 1522 McGee. Questions? Contact Jackie.Thomas@cor.org.
Resurrection Downtown is Turning Five! We want to challenge you to invite your friends and join us in worship Nov. 29 and 30, as we kick off the season of Advent and celebrate our five-year anniversary! This weekend is going to be an awesome time to celebrate what God has done through this community and to dream about what God has in store for us and this city well into the future. Pastor Scott will be preaching live, we’ll have treats and everyone in attendance will receive a special gift. Mark your calendars, invite your friends and show up early so that you can join us in celebration!
I am so blessed to be a part of this community and I am so proud to serve Christ with you in this city.  I hope you'll invite friends and join us as we continue building Christian community this weekend in worship for the conclusion of our sermon series.  Have a great Friday night and I'll look forward to seeing you live and in person this weekend as we offer all that we have and all that we are to God!
Grace and Peace,
Scott
