First United Methodist Church of San Diego, California, United States "Heart of Christianity" Next Sunday's Class, Jan. 4, 2015! for Wednesday, 31 December 2014

Hi to All:
This Sunday we'll discuss the beginning of our new book, Re-imagining God, by Lloyd Geering.  We'll focus on the Foreword written by Tom Hall and the Preface by the author, himself.
Here are some questions and issues to ponder to prepare for the discussion.
1. After reading both the Foreward and the Preface, how do you size up the author, Lloyd Geering?  How would you describe his character, based on these two portions of the book?
2. The Foreword and Preface mainly focus on the author's intellectual and spiritual enlightenment and his faith journey.  To set a proper frame of mind to apprehend the author's mindset, we'll take next Sunday's class to share your and others' faith journey.  Briefly, tell us about your early beliefs and, as you grew and matured, how these beliefs evolved and what may have influenced these beliefs to change.  As Geering writes on p. xi, it is by looking back "that we are able to appreciate the nature of the journey we have travelled"... [and] gain much insight into the kind of persons we have become and how much our thinking has changed as the years have gone by."  Please come prepared to share.
3. P. xiii.  The author writes: "God has a history!"  What's your understanding of God?  Does God have a history that you can discern?  Has the history changed over time; have you re-imagined God?
I look forward to discussing these issues with you.  Meanwhile, take care and be safe, happy new year and hasta domingo, Ben
