Sunday's Scripture:
Jonah 3:1-5, 10
Jonah 3:1 Jonah Goes to Nineveh
2 Once again the Lord told Jonah 2 to go to that great city of Nineveh and preach his message of doom.
3 Jonah obeyed the Lord and went to Nineveh. The city was so big that it took three days just to walk through it. 4 After walking for a day, Jonah warned the people, “Forty days from now, Nineveh will be destroyed!”
5 They believed God’s message and set a time when they would go without eating to show their sorrow. Then everyone in the city, no matter who they were, dressed in sackcloth.
10 When God saw that the people had stopped doing evil things, he had pity and did not destroy them as he had planned.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for
Jonah 3:1-5, 10
Verse 3
[3] So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.
Exceeding great — The greatest city of the known world at that day, it was then in its flourishing state greater than Babylon, whose compass was three hundred eighty-five furlongs, but Nineveh was in compass, four hundred and eighty. It is said, her walls were an hundred foot in height, her walls broad enough for three coaches to meet, and safely pass by each other; that it had fifteen hundred towers on its walls, each two hundred foot high, and one million, four hundred thousand men employed for eight years to build it.
Of three days journey — To walk round the walls, allowing twenty miles to each day's journey.
Verse 4
[4] And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
Shall be overthrown — The threat is express. But there was a reserve with God, on condition of repentance.
Verse 5
[5] So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.

From the greatest — Great and small, rich and poor.
Sermon Stories "Disappointment to to God's Joy" by Gary Lee Parker for Sunday, 25 January 2015 Scripture Text Jonah 3:1-5, 10
As we explore the jurney that Jonah took from rebelion against God to obeying God, we see here that Jonah spent three days preaching to the Ninevites to repent. The NInevites heard the message and repented in sackclothe and ashes of their sins even though they were the archenemies f the People of Israel. Too often we do the same thing in our world today, we see people who totally do not agree with us and are our enemies come to a faith in Jesus and we get angry. Sometimes the anger is because the people look different than us whether they have different sikin color, culturre, language, or maybe even are differently abled. As Dr. James Cone in his book "The Cross and the Lynching Tree" where he stated the White Christianity is not really the Christianity of the Scriptures and Jesus, but Black Christianity is. This is due to the fact of the white supremacy or whites are superior to all other cultures which does not consider that all people no matter who they are ae equal to each other and need the redemption of salvation and sanctification that Jesus gives to us through His own coming, death, and resurrection for our own sins. How do we seek to follow Jesus when we put other people down? Did not Jesus say that He had other sheep that was not of the Israelite pasture? Did not the Apostle Paul say that we all have sinned against God and need to repent and receive God's redemption for our sins? I am renimded of this Hymn that we may sing "He Has Come to Save Us All" by Jean and J. W. Snyder
(refrain)
Make straight in the desert a highway
And let every heart prepare him room
Here is our God the Lord of power and might
He has come to save us all!
1.Wake from your sleep lift your voice
Be glad and exult with all your heart!
(refrain)
Make straight in the desert a highway
And let every heart prepare him room
Here is our God the Lord of power and might
He has come to save us all!
2. The blind shall see, the deaf shall hear
A time will come when every heart will sing!
(refrain)
Make straight in the desert a highway
And let every heart prepare him room
Here is our God the Lord of power and might
He has come to save us all!
A shoot shall sprout from Jesse’s tree
And even the desert will bloom
(refrain)
Make straight in the desert a highway
And let every heart prepare him room
Here is our God the Lord of power and might
He has come to save us all!

The UMW All-Circle Potluck this past summer
This sunday, as a part of our worship, we will celebrate the ministry of United Methodist Women. At our church, UMW is a strong ministry that builds meaningful relationships among women in the congregation; it's also a powerful champion of mission work in the community, and to the world. I think this is one of the most exciting things about UMW--it's always been an organization that seeks to put love into action, working for mercy and justice in our world.
This past week, leaders from United Methodist Women and pastors in our Mission Area (the El Tordondo Mission area, which includes neighbor United Methodist churches in El Segundo, Torrance and Redondo Beach) got together to share stories of mission. It was inspiring to hear about the many ways that we're serving others--supporting foster youth, feeding hungry people, caring for the sick, standing up against human trafficking, and more. Leaders in our UMW are a part of that movement.
For this rich legacy and powerful ministry, I give thanks. (And full disclosure: I'll also enjoy celebrating the fellowship with a slice of cake during fellowship time at church on Sunday...)
Grace and peace,

2015 Lenten Series and Study:
A Story to Tell

This year, we have stories to share during Lent.

Our scriptures tell the big story of the good news of God's love for us.
Our life stories continue that story of love.

Throughout the season, you will be invited to be listening for and sharing stories of God, of faith, of transformation and of hope.

Pastor Molly is currently recruiting volunteers to lead small groups during the season, organized around listening to stories, reading Bible stories together, and sharing stories from our own lives. Please contact her if you might be willing to help.

Lent begins Ash Wednesday (February 18) and continues through Easter on April 5.

Ash Wednesday Worship:
February 18

The United Methodist Churches in our Mission Area are sponsoring a combined Ash Wednesday Worship Service on Wednesday, February 18, at 7:30pm. This year, it will be hosted at El Segundo UMC (540 Main St, El Segundo), where Rev. Lee Carlile is pastor.

Members of our choir will join a Mass Choir for the evening, and our own Pastor Molly will be preaching. All ages are welcome, as we mark the beginning of the season of Lent with prayer and worship. The worship service will include imposition of ashes.

Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study:
Beginning February 1
9:30-10:15am

Our Sunday morning Adult Bible study will resume weekly meetings on February 1, now in Health Chapel. Led and coordinated by Helen Stockwell, this group will use an adult study curriculum from Cokesbury. The study presents stimulating lessons that explore the biblical message and how to apply it to daily life. The curriculum helps adults move from a focus on the Word to reflection on personal, family, church, and community concerns.
Church Finance Update
We are grateful for the generous contributions of so many of you, supporting in our ministries in 2014.

We ended the year just over $1,000 short of our $490,000 budget; even with this small deficit, we can celebrate the ministries enabled by our budget, and all that's made possible by your giving. This is an amazing thing we are doing together!

We were not, however, able to pay 100% of our apportionments to the Annual Conference, our giving share in the ministry of the United Methodist Church in our region, nation and world. We hope to stretch ourselves toward a goal of meeting these askings and obligations in the coming year.

As we move into 2015, we have adopted a budget with only a modest total increase; to fulfill our budget and commitment, we will seek even deeper and broader support. It is not too late to make a pledge of financial giving, either with the card that is in our pew pockets or via our website. Most importantly, it is now a great time to make a priority of giving to the church in our own personal and family budgets--to choose regular giving as a part of our monthly finances.

Thanks for your generosity and support, for your involvement and prayers.

"Lucky Me! I was one of those twenty who attendedTuesday's Church Council meeting, those who are working hard to lead various committees and make our church work. Yes, Pastor Molly heads things up and yes, Church Council Chair Nina Dooley controls the meeting, but everyone there contributed something last Tuesday and you would be proud of our leaders had you been there. Even a few who couldn't attend sent reports that will be reflected in the meeting's minutes as recorded by Nancy Klinger.

"Making Our Church and Our World a Better Place" by Bob Peterson
Lucky Me! I was one of those twenty who attended Tuesday's Church Council meeting, those who are working hard to lead various committees and make our church work.

Ann Gallagher, Chair of the worship committee, seems to have the various gardens around our church campus cared for by a team of four or more. Each cares for a plot, weeding, pruning and watering as needed. If you like the looks of the place, compliment them.

Lots of planning has gone into the all church activity Saturday morning, January 31st, and if you don't attend, you will miss out on a lot of visiting with fellow church people. Nina is calling it “If We build it....” I have been a long time member here and the most important memories I have of our church is improvements that have come after plans and discussions happening in small groups. The Saturday, January 31st event has plans for eight or more small groups and you may find one you fit into and meet old and new friends while participating. Who knows, perhaps a great improvement idea may emerge and our entire church could benefit in a way not yet tried.

One more thing I did learn at that Church Council meeting, was that the people there, staff and volunteers alike, love God, Love our church, love their families and work hard to make it all a great place for us to worship and learn. We have outstanding leaders. Please come Saturday, Jan. 31st. We plan to work together to try and make our church and our world a better place. This should help all of us and, hopefully, visitors who stop in as well.

Our United Methodist Women (UMW) are busy planning another Rummage Sale, set for Friday and Saturday, March 6 & 7. They say they need more Rummage (stuff to sell) and quite a bit more volunteer help. See almost any church woman or their Chair, Rebecca Thomas, for details. You may also call our church office if you have questions.
