AFRICAN FACILITATOR, REV. BLEEMIE ZOEWAH'S REFLECTION
PROPHET DANIEL AS IMMIGRANT
For my reflection on immigrants in the Bible, I will apply the phrase “resolved not to defile yourself.”
Among those who were chosen were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego. But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official permission not to defile himself this way.
God caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel, but the official told Daniel,"I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you."
Daniel then said to the guard, whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, "Please test your servants for ten days. Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.”
The guard agreed to this and tested them for ten days. At the end of the ten days, they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink (Daniel 1:6-16).
My reflection is that the key factor in the brainwashing process of the Babylonian training was a name switch. This was to link the inductees to local gods rather than to support their former religious loyalty. But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way (Daniel 1:8). The pagan food and drink was devoted to idols. So to indulge was to be understood as honouring these deities. God honoured Daniel's trust and allegiance by sovereignly working favorably for him among the heathen leaders (Daniel 1:9).
Practical lessons from this reflection:
1. In the most complex situation, trust God. 2. Never compromise your devotion to God for any temporary earthly gratification. 3. Believers richest inheritance is not here in this world, but waits in heaven.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR - DR. ROBERTO HODGSON
Congratulations to five ethnic SRTs that added new congregations in 2014, according to the new statistics from the GMC research office. The groups in alphabetical order and the number of new congregations are: African 3; Filipino 3; Haitian 4; Hispanic 23; and Korean 4. I encourage the SRTs from all our people groups to continue praying and looking for opportunities to start new congregations in the fulfillment of the church’s mission of “Making Christlike Disciples in the Nations”.
