Partners In Health "Five years ago in Haiti" for Monday, 12 January 2015

Five years ago today, the earth shook Haiti, killing and injuring countless people.
One day later, I arrived in Port-au-Prince to find the general hospital razed and more than 1,500 people lying on the lawn awaiting medical care. We set broken bones, dressed open wounds, and supported victims coping with catastrophic loss.
It was an emergency response to an unspeakable tragedy. It was also part of the commitment to Haiti that's guided us for the past 30 years: to bring lifesaving health care to those who need it most—today, tomorrow, and years into the future.
Will you bring more crucial health care to the people of Haiti with a gift today?
On this somber anniversary, we remember the lives lost and those forever changed. But we also reflect on the strides we've made together since those tragic days, as we now provide high-quality health care to millions across the nation.
Over the past five years, we've made stunning progress, building a network of 12 health care centers that provide much-needed primary care to Haiti's most vulnerable.
That includes a state-of-the-art teaching hospital now open in Mirebalais, where the next generation of Haitian doctors are now in mentored, high-quality residency training.
It's one more step forward in fulfilling our vision for Haiti: for the people of this nation to have the same high-quality health care available in wealthy nations, today and for years into the future.
But here—where most mothers still deliver babies at home, risking death and disability; where a tragically high number of children still suffer from malnutrition; and where far too many people still die from illnesses that basic health care can and should prevent—we have so much left to accomplish.
Your gift today will help correct these injustices.
