I mentioned yesterday in my sermon (you can see it by clicking here) that John Wesley was determined to become fully devoted to God. The truth is that balancing the gift of God's grace with our human response in desiring to be faithful is not always an easy balance to achieve. We can become "soft" and immature, just "receiving" and not responding with our own faithfulness. Or we can focus so much or trying harder that we don't allow God's grace to wash over us.
Wesley erred on the latter side; striving and not having inner peace. I've been there before too. Perhaps you have as well. He decided to come to America as a missionary to the colony of Georgia - you can see monuments to his being there in both Savannah and St. Simon's island where there is a wonderful camp/retreat center and museum about Wesley and early Methodism; it's worth a visit for sure. Annually, Julie Mishoe takes our Confirmands there for a weekend retreat and to make this important connection with our heritage.
But Wesley's journey across the Atlantic was memorable and pivotal - more about that tomorrow.
