Trinity United Methodist Church of Gainesville, Florida, United States Daily Scripture Email Devotion for Tuesday, 13 January 2014 "The importance of an Inner Assurance"
As Wesley was crossing the Atlantic, the ship he was on encountered a very rough storm. He realized he was frightened for his life, but he noticed that a group of pietistic Christians known as Moravians were at total peace. He wanted that inner assurance. He wrote in his diary: "I came to America to save the Indians, but who will save me?"
Lacking this inner peace, and focusing on his own striving, Wesley was an utter disaster as a pastor and missionary in America. He returned home a failure.
But as with many failures - in the hand of God - his became the prelude to joy, change and embraced grace. I'll tell you more about that tomorrow.
