Feeling depressed from his failure in Georgia, Wesley didn't know where to turn, but one providential night, May 24, 1738, he went to a religious society meeting on Aldersgate St in London, where he heard someone read from Martin Luther's preface to his commentary on the Book of Romans. It was about Grace, about being "Accepting God's Acceptance" of him. It was a watershed moment. Wesley wrote: "I felt my heart strangely warmed, that I did trust in Christ alone for salvation."
From this moment on, Wesley preached a Gospel of Grace, of Accepting God's Acceptance and then the importance of growing in grace by intentionally engaging the means of grace: prayer, study of Scripture, public worship, receiving the sacrament, fasting, works of mercy for others.
We all need a kind of "Aldersgate" experience, whether dramatic or quiet, but we say yes to God's love for us and resolve to live for Him.
