But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry... "I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity." (Jonah 4: 1, 2)
What is your God like? Is your God mainly angry, wrathful - or loving, grace-ful? It matters, doesn't it, what kind of God we think we have. Jonah was disappointed God wasn't more wrathful - should have wiped out those darn Ninevehites. Jonah knew God probably wouldn't, which may be the real reason he didn't want to go there; Jonah knew that because he knew God was a "gracious and compassionate God."
That's a big deal - what kind of God we serve and follow and give our lives to. The same God that Jonah knew is the God that Jesus revealed to us in His life, ministry and teaching.
John Wesley knew that God is primarily a God whose nature is love and grace, which is yet another reason I'm so glad I'm a Methodist. I agree, and I love telling people about that kind of God! AND, it helps me live in grace and love toward others, rather than harshness and anger and vindictiveness. What about you?
