NPH Interim Board of Directors presents 'Situational Analysis Report' to 92nd General Board
Overland Park, Kansas
The Interim Board of Directors of Nazarene Publishing House (NPH) released a 53-page report to the 92nd General Board detailing its independent findings of NPH after nearly five months in governance of the Church of the Nazarene's 102-year-old publishing enterprise.
The "Situational Analysis Report" report was presented in executive session to the 51 General Board members and the Board of General Superintendents, with invited members from Global Ministry Center on Saturday, 21 February 2015.
The report, in response to the 14 October 2014 action of the Board of General Superintendents, regarding the work of the Interim NPH Board of Directors is posted in English and accessible by clicking here. Translations in other languages will be available soon.
Bob Brower, NPH Board chair, presented the report on behalf of Monte Chitwood, vice-chair; Keith A. Pardue, secretary; and David W. Graves, BGS chair and general superintendent in jurisdiction of NPH. Dr. Graves serves on the NPH Board as a non-voting member.
"The purpose of the report was to present, through the best information available to us, a record of actions and conditions that led NPH to where it is today; to respond to questions and concerns fromthe general superintendents, General Board members, pastors, and laity of local Nazarene churches; and to provide a foundation for NPH's future," Chairman Brower said.
Dr. Graves, on behalf of the BGS, expressed appreciation for the commitment of time and energy from the Interim NPH Board. "Bob Brower, Monte Chitwood and Keith Pardue have proven themselves churchmen in every sense of that word," Dr. Graves noted.
The three interim governing board members were elected and installed in October 2014, filling three of the vacancies created when the previous NPH Board resigned. They were put in place to govern the business affairs and all required legal corporate obligations of the publishing house for the benefit of the Church of the Nazarene.
Charles A. Davis, Jr., president of the General Board, also expressed gratitude for the comprehensive reporting on NPH. "The facts are what everyone has been seeking and we are grateful for the thorough work of the Interim NPH Board," Davis added.
In his closing comments, Brower stated:
"So out of our chaos, crisis, and struggle, what is it that God wants to do in and through the church and NPH, for His honor and glory? We know it must be different than what it has been. The church is changing. NPH is changing. Now, what is it that we must do together as God’s people through the church and NPH?"
The "Situational Analysis Report" now goes to the General Board and BGS for further consideration of the findings and recommendations.--Board of Directors, Nazarene Publishing House

Lola Brickey elected global NMI director
Overland Park, Kansas
By Sarah Glass for NCN News
Lola Brickey, vice president for the Nazarene Missions International Global Council, was elected global NMI director Monday at the 92nd Session of the General Board.
She replaces Daniel Ketchum, who announced his resignation effective August 31, 2014, after nine years in the position.
Global Mission Director Verne Ward believes Brickey is a good fit for the position.
"Lola has the ability to lead NMI to be an effective resource for the local church in mobilizing people for mission," he said. "We want to help the local church by facilitating their vision and their passion for mission, both locally and globally. Lola understands our vast cultural and generational composition and will help us refocus on mobilizing a global church for a global mission."
Brickey became interested in missions during her formative years at her father's church.
"The church my father pastored for the first 13 years of my life in Springfield, Massachusetts, was the home church of Oscar and Marjorie Stockwell, missionaries to Mozambique," she said. "I was profoundly impacted by them and how our church prayed, loved, supported, and connected with them."
In 1985, Brickey was elected a local Nazarene World Mission Society (now NMI) president. In 2001, she was elected NMI president for the Eastern Kentucky District, a position she currently holds. Six years later she was elected to the Global NMI Council representing the East Central USA region and currently serves as vice president. Brickey is also the NMI representative to the General Board.
Having worked on all levels of NMI, she endeavors to guide mission leaders, helping them give structure to their passion in the current culture.
"The continuing challenge is how we integrate using 21st century tools, techniques, and methods without losing those who still prefer other methods," Brickey said.
In addition to her missions positions, Brickey has served as a systems engineer at Ashland Petroleum Company, as a college instructor at Ashland Community & Technical College, and in local volunteer positions.
Brickey received a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Vernon Nazarene University and a Master of Business Administration from Morehead State University. She and her husband, Frank, are the parents of two adult children.

Much prayer is still needed as letters must now be written and submitted to the officials. Please continue to praywith expectation of a great movement of the Holy Spirit!

Myanmar church members host children's ministries
Myanmar, Asia-Pacific Region
Myanmar (formerly Burma) has been dominated by religions other thanChristianity for centuries. Currently less than 4 percent of the population is considered Christian, but the Nazarene denomination continues to grow in the area.
Burmese Nazarenes began reaching out to those living in Myanmar's Mon State in 2006. After eight years of planting seeds, there are now four organized churches and four home churches.
One of these Burmese Nazarenes is Pastora Ruth. Every Saturday, Ruth travels to Ywar Tan Shey, where she reaches out to more than 30 children in the area by providing Bible lessons, games, and other activities.
Another Christian who attends Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene had a heart for the children in her community. She prayed and shared her thoughts with her pastor. Together they stepped out in faith without any outside funding to establish another home children's ministry to nurture the future of God's church in this area.
"I was very surprised and encouraged to visit two more houses of local Nazarene members where they too had opened their homes for children's ministry," said Bill Kwon, Church of the Nazarene country coordinator for Myanmar. "All of these Christ followers have the same passion to reach out to children. God is blessing their homes and ministry. I am reminded of the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000, with just five loaves of bread and two fish (Matthew 14:13-21). In Mon State, Jesus asked the local church members what they had. They gave what they had and God is surely blessing and multiplying."
Kwon will be in the U.S. from June 15 to July 30. To schedule a visit, click here.--Church of the Nazarene Asia-Pacific Region

Biprosh Devsharma, a pastor and JESUS Film leader, passed away this month at the age of 30. Devsharma was on the roof of a home setting up for a JESUS film presentation when he fell, causing severe injuries. He passed away after a short stay in the hospital.
Devsharma, the oldest of three sons, is survived by his wife and 18-month-old son. He was also caring for his parents at the time of hisdeath.
In 2003, while still in school, Devsharma became a JESUS Film team helper. He progressed to team member status and concluded his service as a team leader.
Devsharma's team showed the JESUS film 52 times last year, making 7,130 evangelistic contacts and leading 926 people to become new believers in Christ. Under his leadership, 11 preaching points were established.
"He used to take me on his bicycle to visit compassionate ministry centers and preaching points," said the India Eastern district superintendent. "We traveled many places together when I was his JESUS Film coach. I have many good memories with him."
Continued prayer is requested for Devsharma's family as they transition through this unexpected tragedy and for his team as they carry on without his leadership.--JFHP

Argentina pastor remembered
Argentina, South America Region
Hugo Olveira, a pastor and professor, passed away February 8 due to respiratory failure.
Olveira came to know the Lord at age 25 when a friend invited him to a prayer group at the Union of the Assemblies of God Church. He soon felt God's call to serve Him, so he enrolled in an Assemblies of God Bible school. After three years of preparation, Olveira helped with a church in the city of Pergamino and a church in the town of Merlo. Every day on his way home, Olveira went down a street where there was a Church of the Nazarene. More than once he went in to listen to what was preached, and he was struck by the liturgy of the church. Olveira decided to request membership there and the pastor later asked him to teach Bible studies.
After his ordination as a Church of the Nazarene elder in 1995, Olveira pastored the Moreno Belen Church of the Nazarene and, until his death, worked as a professor at Nazarene Theological Seminary-Southern Cone (Seminario Teológico Nazareno del Cono Sur).
One of Olveira's students was Stella Maris Lombardo, whom he married on March 18, 1989. The couple had two children, Juan Manuel and Ana Clara.
Friends and family members shared that Hugo loved to research and read about general history. He also admired the life of the Apostle Peter for his impetuous and determined character.

Southern Florida Nazarenes gather for Hispanic Mission Congress
Miami, Florida
The Southern Florida District held its 16th annual Hispanic Mission Congress February 21 at the Miami Beth-El Church of the Nazarene. Dominican Republic missionary Scott Armstrong encouragedrepresentatives from the district's 20 Hispanic churches to avoid clutter and remain diligent to God's call to the 21st century church.
"The response by our children, teens, and adults to this congress was phenomenal," said Ardee Coolidge, host pastor and District Nazarene Missions International Council Hispanic language coordinator. "Our people love Scott Armstrong and his passion for the gospel."
There were age-specific mission education opportunities and activitiesfor the 300 people who attended the all-day event.
Several churches brought praise team bands, soloists, and interpretive dance groups. In addition to Armstrong, the group heard from District NMI President Dennis Moore and District Hispanic Coordinator Jorge Diaz.
The event concluded with an outdoor food festival. Each of the churches built colorful booths where authentic food was served from Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, and other Latin American countries.
"It is amazing what the Hispanic churches in Southern Florida do each year for this event and especially for the food festival," Armstrong said.
The churches also competed for festival awards. First place went to Pahokee Hispanic, second place to Miami Beth-El, and third place to West Palm Beach Maranatha.
The District NMI Council sponsors the annual Hispanic Mission Congress as a way of directly educating and inspiring the growing number of Hispanic churches in Southern Florida.--Southern Florida District via NCN News submissions

Multi-Campus Seminary expands to PLNU
Kansas City, Missouri
Nazarene Theological Seminary announced it will begin offering courses for its Master of Divinity degree on the campus of Point Loma NazareneUniversity in San Diego, California, this summer.
PLNU is the fifth Nazarene college or university in the U.S. to become a part of the seminary's Multi-Campus Seminary program.* Current campuses are Southern Nazarene University (Bethany, Oklahoma), Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Mount Vernon, Ohio), Trevecca Nazarene University (Nashville, Tennessee), and Eastern Nazarene College (Quincy, Massachusetts).
"NTS is providing a great gift and opportunity to ministers in the southwest," said Ron Benefiel, dean of PLNU's School of Theology and Christian Ministry and former NTS president. "By offering NTS courses on the PLNU campus (coupled with online and video conferencingoptions), NTS is making it possible for students to take all the coursework necessary to complete a solid NTS MDiv right here in San Diego! If students preparing for pastoral ministry are looking for a program that combines academic excellence with accessibility and affordability, this is the program they should consider."
As a part of the MCS program, NTS residential faculty and professors on host campuses teach one-week intensive module courses that are a part of the curriculum for the NTS Master of Divinity degree. These module courses, combined with the seminary's online and video conference course offerings, make it possible for pastors to earn the MDiv without relocating from their current ministry context — and to do so in as few as three or four years.
"Our Multi-Campus Seminary program is incredibly important," said Carla Sunberg, NTS president. "Not only does it make graduate theological education more accessible to ministers throughout the United States, but it also provides a significant way for many of our Nazarene schools to partner and more effectively serve the Church. It is exciting to be a part of such a gifted team of educators who are committed to preparing leaders for the future of our church."
To learn more about NTS and the Multi-Campus Seminary or to see a list of course offerings at all locations, visit nts.edu/multi-campus-seminary or contact the NTS Recruitment Office at 800-831-3011, ext. 5456 or at recruitment@nts.edu.
*The seminary's accrediting agency has granted NTS approval to offer the complete MDiv degree at four of its multi-campus sites (residential approval pending for location in San Diego, California).--Nazarene Theological Seminary

Higher Learning Commission reaffirms Olivet's accreditation
Bourbonnais, Illinois
The Higher Learning Commission this month reauthorized Olivet Nazarene University's institutional accreditation, culminating the extensive self-study process the university undertakes every 10 years for accreditation.
Olivet was recognized for maintaining a solid financial situation, being significantly mission-focused, having realistic goals and planning processes, and meeting all criteria for accreditation.
The university has earned accreditation continuously since 1965. Accreditation assesses an institution's capacity to assure its own quality and requires the institution to produce significant evidence that it does so. The HLC, one of six independent U.S. regional accreditors, evaluates degree-granting, post-secondary educational institutions in 19 states that comprise the North Central region.
"This accreditation continues to justify the trust that our students, prospective students, and their families have in our university," said John C. Bowling, university president. "The comprehensive review process allowed the Higher Learning Commission to affirm our vision and the progress that has taken place at the University over the past decade."
In addition to assuring quality and adherence to academic standards, accreditation determines a school's eligibility for participation in federal (Title IV) and state financial aid programs, and supports institutional eligibility for employer tuition assistance.
Accreditation standards ensure the acceptance and transfer of college credit, and a degree from an accredited institution is a prerequisite for manygraduate programs. Also, professions that require licensure may not accept degrees from schools without regional accreditation.
Bowling thanked everyone on the university faculty and staff for meeting the rigorous requirements of the HLC's affirmation process. He cited the efforts of the Olivet committee that shepherded the university-wide project over a two-year period: Sue Rattin, committee chair and Olivet's director of Assessment and Learning Support Services; Kent Olney, chair of the Department of Behavioral Sciences; Paul Koch, business professor; Dianne Schaafsma, director of Financial Services; Jonathan Bartling, dean of the School of Graduate and Continuing Studies; Ivor Newsham, consultant; and Cheryl Paarlberg, administrative assistant for Rattin.
"Commitment to educating our students well, along with professional diligence, continues to make the Olivet experience an educational hallmark for our students and alumni," Rattin said. "We take our place confidently among the best higher education institutions. The key to a successful effort to receive HLC reauthorization of accreditation is the collection of substantive and meaningful evidence to support the claims we make about our university.
"Through focus groups, surveys, end-of-course evaluation, faculty and staff evaluations, audit reports, and a plethora of other sources of evidence, we have affirmed that Olivet is indeed a place that fosters 'Higher Learning for a Higher Calling,' the theme of our self-study."--Olivet Nazarene University

Nashville, Tennessee
Trevecca Nazarene University welcomed 200 high school students February 25 as part of the Education Equal Opportunity Group's 14th annual Project Save-a-Student Leadership and Training Conference.
"To think that a single encounter with a high school student might change the trajectory of their life ... that's why we welcome the students of EEOG," said Dan Boone, Trevecca president.
The intensive three-day program provides practical and real life learning opportunities not only to help students stay in school and graduate high school, but to continue their education with alternative learning opportunities such as workshops, job fairs, and campus visits around Nashville.
This year's theme, "It's Your Time to Lead!" focused on vision, commitment, and success. Students visited Vanderbilt University and Fisk University along with Trevecca. They also heard from and met Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam along with other political and business leaders.
