Celebrating MLK by Serving
Dear Friend,
Fifty years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. expanded the struggle for civil rights to include the fight for economic justice.
This need for justice continues on many levels, which is why Dr. King's historic work remains a source of inspiration in 2016. We celebrate his legacy each year in our communities and across the nation with festive parades and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. I am proud to be taking part in both here in San Diego and I hope you will join me.
The 36th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade will take place from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, January 17th. The parade starts at the corner of Harbor Drive and Cedar Street and heads south.
I also will once again join the Human Rights Campaign as they collect and assemble donations to help LGBT homeless youth. HRC will use the donations to create life-sustaining care packages for distribution to young people in distress. The event takes place from noon to 4 p.m.on Sunday, January 17th at the Lafayette Hotel, 2223 El Cajon Blvd. The video clip below shows some of the fun we had doing this in one of our previous days of service.
I invite you to join us as we share in the Day of Service by supporting homeless LGBT youth. Please RSVP at speaker.atkins@assembly.ca.gov.
If you can't attend the parade or the HRC event on January 17th, there will be several opportunities in San Diego to honor Dr. King's name this holiday weekend. The events include projects at the Mount Hope Community Garden on Saturday, January 16th, the Interfaith Service at Balboa Park and Feeding America San Diego on Monday, January 18th.
Dr. King sought to "open the doors of opportunity" to all. Thank you for continuing the work to make his dream of equality a reality.
Warmly,
Toni G. Atkins
