GET COOKIN’ FOR HOPE YOUTH!
Are you a chef? Do you love to cook but need an
audience to appreciate your creations? You are the
answer to our youth group prayers. As part of our
youth ministry, we eat dinner together on Thursday
nights, and we are looking for people who would be
interested in contributing to the youth group
through their cooking talents. We need dinner for
approximately 20-30 youth to be delivered to the youth room between 5:00 and
6:00 on Thursday evenings. If you would like to volunteer in this way, please
contact Lorrie Frost at youthlorrie@gmail.com.
POTATO BOWL & TALENT SHOW
Kick off Super Bowl weekend with our annual Potato Bowl where everyone wins! First, join us for a dinner of baked potatoes with all of the toppings, and then stay for the show. Have a talent you would like to share in the show? Perfect! We’re looking for all sorts of talents (and untalents). Singers, musicians, jugglers and anything else you can think of are all welcome. $8 for ages 11 and up; $4 for ages 4-10; free for 3 and younger; $25 family maximum. If you have any questions or would like to sign up for the talent show in advance, contact Lorrie Frost at youthlorrie@gmail.com.
WELCOME LORRIE FROST!
It is with great joy we have the opportunity to announce to our church family the hiring of Mrs. Lorrie Frost as Youth Director of Hope United Methodist Church. Lorrie has already been an active fixture of our church family over the years. With her leadership in Stephen Ministry, adult Bible studies, and dedicated attendance
to SNA Lorrie already has a strong presence in the life of the church. As Lorrie begins leadership in the youth program, there will be new adventures and opportunities for our youth. Please hold her in your prayers as this new stage of leadership is beginning in the life of our church.
Pastor Brian’s Faith Works
Happy New Year 2016!
We have a bonus day this year, since it is Leap Year. No matter what the circumstances of our lives, we have 366 days to follow Jesus and spread his love.
Tables for 7:
Please contact me if you are interest in organizing or hosting a meal.
This has been known in the past as “Tables for 6” or “Tables for 8”. “Tables for 7” is the same thing, with the added assurance that individuals are welcome. You do not need to be a couple to partake.
We will have sign-up sheets on the patio. The name of a host for a dinner is at the top of a table, with open spaces for people to sign up. The host sets the date, the time, the place (home, restaurant, or church) and the kind of meal. You may want to do a potluck or you may want to serve the whole meal as the host. You sign up for the meal you want to join. That is round one. Then we do it again, with anyone who wants to host planning another meal. New sign up sheets on the patio and a new time and date and place and kind of meal. This continues as long as we want it to continue — as long as people want to host and other people want to come for a meal.
Renewal of your Wedding Vows — February 14
Valentine’s Day is on a Sunday this year. We will give married couples an opportunity to renew your wedding vows. The exact time will be announced soon. It will be 5 minutes after the end of one of our services, to give parents a few minutes to get their children.
Sermons and Services on Dealing with Conflict:
January 2, 3 What to do about conflict with my whole family
January 9, 10 What to do about conflict with my children & Teens
January 16, 17 What to do about conflict in my work setting
January 23, 24 What to do about conflict in my community
January 30, 31 Currently active moms on Women’s Ministry Day
February 6, 7 What to do about conflict with leaders
God bless us all, and may we reach out to others with the same love that Jesus has given us.
Pastor Brian C. Kent
CONFIRMATION MENTORS NEEDED
As the youth programmed begins to focus on interaction between youth and adults we have a very unique blessing you can be a part of. We are currently looking for people interested in being mentors for
the 2016 confirmation class. On Sunday January 31, we will have a gathering in the youth room for anyone interested in mentoring one of the participants in our 2016 confirmation program. Pastor Drew
Will provide a list of questions to ask weakly to assist these youth through this exciting process. Please e-mail Pastor Drew revdavis@hopeumc.com if you are interested.
MISSIONS CORNER
Hope’s many missions had much to celebrate at the end of 2015 and we look forward to serving even more people and places in 2016. We hope to have a recap of 2015 in the February Times of Hope. In the meantime, thank all of you for your faithful support. Special thanks to Len and Donna Meier and all the volunteers and donors who helped with our Christmas meal bags for the Good Neighbor Center.
Hope members provided 139 bags with food for holiday meals plus over $1500 for additional food and gift cards. Your generosity not only
filled many stomachs but also lifted many spirits in this season of sharing God’s love.
Besides helping our neighbors, Hope members donated $3000 to help injured warriors return home for Christmas. And, to spread the spirit here in San Diego, God’s Groupies filled Christmas tins
with cookies to add to gift bags for injured service members living at Freedom Station and transitioning back to civilian life. Norma and Al Dahlvig have worked tirelessly to spear-head these worthwhile
efforts—thanks to them and their many helpers.
Our Januray Special Offering goes to Children of Promise orphanage in Tijuana. Started by a couple from Poway, the orphanage serves about 80 children ages 3-18 who have lived on the streets and/or been badly abused by their parents and others.
The orphanage provides the children a safe home, education, job skills and caring, Christian support. Financial donations are especially important now that the Mexican government has made it
very difficult for us to take clothing and food across the border.
Thank you again for sharing the blessings you have received with those in need. — Terry and Larry Sieck, co-chairman, Outreach/Missions Committee
