Reverend Dennis Howard Matthews, 66, a retired clergy member of the Great Plains United Methodist Conference and resident of Bronson, Kansas, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, at his home in Bronson. He was born July 17, 1949, in Mt. Vernon, Ill., the son of Oscar Eugene Matthews and Ruby Marie Lane Matthews.
Dennis served churches in Illinois from 1967 to 1980 then moved to Tonganoxie, Kan., where he served for seven years at the West Haven Baptist Church. Other pastorates included three years in Moran, Bronson, and Mildred United Methodist Churches, nine years at the DeSoto United Methodist Church and six years at First United Methodist Church in Holton, Kan. He had also served as chaplain at Aldersgate Village in Topeka, Kan. His loves were his churches, his music and cooking for friends and family. His most cherished possession was his children and grandchildren.
Dennis is survived by two daughters, Kimberly Adams, of Bronson, Kansas and Keri Brotherton (Jeff) of Spring Hill, Kansas, his mother of Fairfield, Illinois, a brother, David Matthews (Marilyn), Herrin, Illinois and two sisters Nancy McGill (Ron) and Carole Matthews, all of Fairfield, Ill. He was preceded in death by a son, Scott, and a grandson, Landon.
Cremation. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, at the DeSoto United Methodist Church, 8760 Kill Creek Road, DeSoto, Kansas 66018.
