"What I Learned at the T-Mobile Store" Rabbi Moffic of Highland Park, Illinois, United States for Monday, 11 January 2016
The Book is Here

Yesterday I spent a good two hours at the T-Mobile store.
I was switching over from Verizon, and with a family with kids, cell phones, iPads, etc, it takes a while.
I couldn't leave the store because I needed to sign endless documents. And I couldn't go online and waste time since they were working with phone.
So I got to do a little thinking. And arrived at some important realizations.
First, I realized the power of complacency. Having been on Verizon for many years, I was wasting hundreds of dollars a month. It was just easier to keep the same service.
What We Resist, Persists
How many of us don't make an important change because it's easier to keep things as they are. Change is hard, but try changing a few little things, and then the big things will follow.
In other words, change is a practice that can be learned. The more we do it, the more comfortable we become with it.
Second, it felt great to set aside my cell phone for a few hours. We can become so inundated with reacting to information that we forget to take the time to think about it. As writer David Kekich put it,
Thinking is the very essence of, and the most difficult thing to do in, business and in life. Empire builders spend hour-after-hour on mental work…
Take a Digital Sabbath
A digital Sabbath gives us time to think. Now I already try to take some kind of digital sabbath each week (and often fail at it).
But perhaps taking mini-digital Sabbaths during the day or week can help. We all need time to think so we can make decisions for long-term gain, not short-term comfort.
Those digital Sabbaths also give us time to read.
And if you are looking for a good read, pick up a copy of my new book on the Jewishness of Jesus. It's available in paperback at http://www.rabbimoffic.com/JewishJesusPaperback and kindle athttp://www.rabbimoffic.com/JewishJesus
