Father Piero Gheddo
Missionary of the PIME
I have known about ZENIT for many years now because in visiting Catholic missions in various parts of the world, I’ve often seen local missionaries and clergy reading ZENIT each day, in various languages. I think ZENIT is a good Catholic news agency. It expresses its motto: “The world seen from Rome,” that is from the Holy See.

In recent years, the Church is discovering it is not enough to evangelize persons and families with the tools of parish ministry. The very culture of a country has to be evangelized. In Italy, we have a population still substantially united affectively to baptism and Christianity. But there is a national culture, that of the news media, that in many ways is no longer Christian. When Cardinal Camillo Ruini began the Italian bishops’ “Culture Project” in the 90s, it referred to this: to evangelize the culture of the people, a culture that is created above all through radio, television, newspapers, universities, etc. ZENIT’s aim is precisely here: to evangelize through information and to form people with news and documents that are formative.
I live in a missionary institute, the Pontifical Institute of Foreign Missions in Milan, and this is my experience: If I ask for support for our charity work (children, the hungry, the sick, wells, lepers, etc), help arrives fairly easily. But if I ask support for our magazines and missionary books, hardly anything comes in. ZENIT experiences the same thing, and it should be economically sustained because of the great service it offers to the Church and the Gospel.
Recently, ZENIT has taken a jump forward, placing itself at the level of a global agency. It is difficult for me to understand, but I trust in ZENIT’s journalists, as I know them personally. I am a senior citizen now. It doesn’t matter. If I could, I would help ZENIT. Thank you for all you can give.
God bless you.
