Through offerings including Faith Promise giving, the church helps provide for the medical needs of Nazarene missionaries, which allows them to be able to serve and not worry about where they will scrape up the cost of the next premium.Nazarene Missions International has helped subsidize some of these funds since as early as 1919. Support for Missionary Health Care is encouraged and can also be contributed to through Memorial Roll, Distinguished Service Award, and Gifts from the Heart. The more money that comes in specifically for this, allows more of the WEF to be used specifically for evangelism.
Links to a video and an article regarding the Church of the Nazarene's response to the Ebola crisis were recently added to the Freebies Page of the Living Mission website here. "How to Look on the Bright Side of Anything"
Four Ways to Inject More Laughter into Your Life
Being sad, morose, melancholy, or moody won't help you meet goals or experience personal growth. However, laughter can. Besides being downright fun, laughter has health benefits. That's not just my opinion; it's the wisdom of the Bible! "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones," according to Proverbs 17:22.
Medical science confirms the benefit of a daily dose of humor. Laughter activates the body chemistry that generates the will to live, and it increases our capacity to fight disease. Laughing relaxes the body and reduces problems associated with high blood pressure, strokes, arthritis and ulcers.
Some research suggests laughter may also reduce the risk of heart disease! Historically, research has shown that distressing emotions such as depression, anger, anxiety, and stress are related to heart disease. One medical study suggests that a good sense of humor and the ability to laugh at stressful situations help mitigate the physical effects of these negative emotions.
Need a little more laughter in your life? Here are some ways to inject a little laughter into your daily routine.

  1. Don't take yourself too seriously. Be willing to laugh at your own foibles and mistakes. It will make you less self-conscious and more approachable, and you'll feel better!
  2. Share a good, clean joke. Admittedly, with all the politically correct stuff, safe-for-work humor is getting hard to come by, but you can find it if you look. Share a funny story with your friends or family, and get them laughing too.
  3. Use humor to communicate. Nearly any presentation from a sermon to a sales pitch can be livened up with a bit of humor. If you're not a natural funny bones, no worries. Even if you tell the joke wrong, people will find good-natured humor in the attempt!
  4. Find joy in everything. There's a time and place to be somber, but even when you're in a tense situation you can usually find something to laugh about. Relieve stress and tension with a "Well, it could be worse" or a "Look on the bright side" quip.

Remember, humor is supposed to lighten the load. Never resort to putdowns or sarcasm to get a laugh. Your punch lines should heal, never harm.
According to some experts, by the time a child reaches preschool, he or she will laugh about five hundred times a day. Adults laugh about 15 times a day. Why not be better than average. Laugh more; you'll live longer![Stan Toler]

The earthquake was located about 7km from one of the larger towns on Malekula (Island) which is basically a harbor for ships to go and come. There are no major towns on Malekula and the bush material homes handle the earthquakes quite well.
We definitely felt it here. Our house rocked back and forth for about 15 seconds. So, I’m sure at Norsup (island to the north) they felt it, but most likely no damage. We will listen for reports. Thanks for checking in on us![Sylvia Potter.]

PRAY FOR SOUTH SUDAN – NAZARENES MISSING
Australia: The pastor of our South Sudan Church of the Nazarene at Mount Waverley, Melbourne, Australia, (Pastor Stephen) has recently returned from a trip to South Sudan.
Pastor Stephen found that as many as 208 family members and friends of members of the South Sudan congregation in Mount Waverly have been killed in South Sudan. Additionally, another 102 are still missing, feared dead, in the ongoing civil unrest that has plagued the nation of South Sudan since its independence in 2011.
“Our request is that you may join in our prayers, even in your own time. Pray that the killing be stopped and that those missing may be found, alive and safe,” Pastor Stephen.
According to news reports from South Sudan, there are at least 7 different armed groups in 9 of the 10 states, with tens of thousands displaced. Additionally, Inter-ethnic warfare that in some cases predates the war of independence is widespread.
Please join with the South Sudan CotN in Mount Waverly, as they pray for this nation, for the leaders of the nation, and for their families and friends who have been so severely impacted by this ongoing unrest.[Feature Photo Credit: http://www.ctvnews.ca]

TRIBES LEAD TO IMPACT FOR SUMMER NYI CAMPS IN AUSTRALIA!
Australia: Summer is just around the corner, and NYI Summer camps are before us once again. The land down under had their summer camp at the beginning of the year though because of the different seasons there! We have an awesome report from Patrick Montelongo of the Australia Southern District and Cameron Batkin, our Field Youth Coordinator from the Australia / New Zealand Field (ANZ).
“The Australia Southern District NYI Summer Camp was held this year fromJanuary 11-15, 2016, in Springwood, New South Wales (NSW); a beautiful town located near the Blue Mountains region just outside of Sydney.
Our theme this year was “Pause”, taking a moment to stop and consider the wonders and work of God, found in Job 37:14. The camp of just over 100 attendees responded well to this message and took it to heart in prayer, making steps to walk closer in their relationship with Jesus and reflecting on his wonder and the gift of grace in salvation.

This camp ministry of the Australia Southern District brings young people from across the three Southern States of Australia and requires a road trip of close to 1400km. This year’s camp was one of the biggest in recent years. One of the blessings of this year’s camp was that campers are growing in their faith and are now stepping up and growing as leaders themselves and becoming an integral part of the team. This year’s camp was a culmination of a great year for the Australia Southern District NYI Council as they have really worked with the Nazarene Youth International ( NYI) core value Go: Leadership Development.

One of the key strategies that has helped drive the effectiveness and success of the camps over recent years has been the concept of Tribes (grouping of the youth during the camps).
The campers come from small to medium sized youth groups across a very large geographic area and come from a range of different cultural backgrounds. They work very hard at keeping the core group of each tribe the same each year. The tribes do a wide range of activities throughout the week that really help the friendships and connections in each tribe. We were blessed to have a fantastic preacher, Pastor Matt Tantarri from Ballina, NSW. Matt has been a youth pastor for many years at an Australian Christian Churches (AOG) Church and has a passion for leading young people to Jesus. He not only inspired us in preaching but was a great example of building relationships and having meaningful conversations at every other moment of the camp. Along with Matt, we were blessed by our local Nazarene Ministers: Patrick Montelongo, Thiago Bonifacio, Aaron Park & Chang Po Ching.

Youth representing every district across Australia were a blessing to the camp with fantastic messages and interactive sessions all empowering our youth to walk more closely with Christ. The planning has already begun for 2017.”

“EXCITING AND LIFE-CHANGING” QUADRENNIAL NYC EVENT!
BAGUIO CITY, Philippines “Exciting and life-changing!” This is how youth leaders described the just concluded Philippines-Micronesia Nazarene Youth Congress (PMNYC), held in the Philippines’ summer capital – Baguio City last April 25 – 29, 2016. The theme of the PMNYC was “Emerge: Honoring the past. Shaping the future.” NYC is a quadrennial event of the Nazarene Youth International (NYI) in the Church of the Nazarene. This year’s congress was attended by 190 youth leaders from 12 districts on the Philippines and Micronesia.
(L/R) Gary Hartke, Racquel Valeza, Stephen Gualberto
The event included workshops, meetings, and plenaries led by Philippine-Micronesia Field Strategy Coordinator (FSC) Rev. Stephen Gualberto, Global Nazarene Youth International (NYI) Director Rev. Gary Hartke, Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary Professor Dr. Daniel Behr, APNYI Regional Coordinator Rev. Janary Suyat and other invited guest speakers.Every evening was concluded with moving and powerful services and solemn ceremonies such as foot-washing and candle lighting.
“When my leader knelt in front of me and washed my feet, I was humbled and moved,” said one of the delegates from Southern Tagalog district. It was the first time that I saw him do that and it touched me. I’ve always looked up to him and now I look up to him more.”Sean Tinio – World Mission Communications
Aside from the formal gatherings, the event was filled with fun and fellowship where the delegates got to present their culture and tradition. The participants were also divided into small groups for discussion. It was inspiring to see everyone share their story and encourage one another through prayer. PMNYC was also a venue for the NYI to thank, acknowledge and honor leaders who have shown tremendous support and encouragement.
The event was concluded by a community immersion where delegates went to provincial jails, hospitals and nearby communities to share the gospel and spread the love of Jesus Christ. With the leadership Racquel Valeza, the PMNYC coordinator, together with the Philippine NYI Council and working committee, PMNYC truly was a success.
“No words can further describe the beauty of what God has done to everyone who attended,” shared Terence Lustaña – APNTS Student. “Everyone went home revived, empowered and amazed by the goodness and faithfulness of the Lord. Truly, this was no ordinary event. Everything that happened was part of God’s great plan and the delegates themselves can prove that.”
“I thought I would never join NYC, but God made a way for me to be here and He provided just in time,” said Joemarie Lorono of the Central Visayas District. “Jesus is the best thing that has ever happened in my life and NYC follows.”
Rev. Stephen Gualberto, Philippine Micronesia Field Strategy Coordinator
Though PMNYC 2016 has ended, everybody’s journey is just beginning. New challenges are about to come and its up to those who attended to respond to the call. Thank you to everyone who supported and prayed for this event. Without you PMNYC will not be a success but most of all, thank you to Jesus who has made all things possible.[Submitted: Terence Lustaña]

REVIVAL, BAPTISM, CELEBRATION – MAKING CHRISTLIKE DISCIPLES IN THAILAND!
Northern Thailand: It was an exciting time in Northern Thailand as the district recently finished their biennial Nazarene Family Camp, an event that took place from March 28-31, 2016, in Banmai Maekon village.

During these four days, 400-500 Nazarenes from across 17 Nazarene churches came together to celebrate their common bond – Christ!
Rev. Dr. Collin Elliot and his wife Shireen were the keynote speakers and shared messages on Holiness, which the Lord used to bring a true spiritual revival across the camp meeting! The people expressed great joy in hearing the teaching on entire sanctification as they had never heard it before; this was something they found could be practical in their daily lives.

Rev. Shireen was given time in the afternoons to meet the women and bring them messages from the Bible. This was the first time for the women’s group to have a special speaker and everyone was so touched that they truly did not want the meetings to end.
11 people baptized during the camp.
One of the meeting’s highlights was the celebration of the baptism of 11 believers. This truly brought joy to the week as these new believers celebrated their commitment to Christ.

In Myanmar, during the summer holidays from public school, you will find children of various ages from many religious backgrounds coming together for continued education in our Nazarene churches. The focus of these classes are on English language and Mathematics, and the bonus material is what keeps their attention.
Three years ago one of the Nazarene elders who also has served as the academic dean of Southeast Asia Nazarene Bible College (SEANBC) started this program and since then, has had 7 classes based on the age of the children.

THESE CHILDREN ARE VERY MUCH LOVED BY JESUS CHRIST!
Myanmar, Southeast Asia Field: The message of HOPE has just recently been shared with more than 200 children in northern Myanmar. This through the avenue of a summer English ministry program!
The summer program, International English Language Center (IELC), was started three years ago and led by Rev. Ro Ding Liana, a Nazarene Elder who has served as the academic dean of Southeast Asia Nazarene Bible College (SEANBC).
Children’s Choir
Over the last three public school summer holidays, seven classes have been prepared according to the age of the students and their grades, focusing on English language and Mathematics, with morning and evening devotions led by one of the pastors. These times of devotion have included praise and worship, group songs, acting, Bible recitation, solos, choir, visual presentations, and of course, preaching and teaching of the Word.
“The Nazarene message of holiness has been planted in the lives of these children every day,” shares Liana.
More than 12 ethnic groups of varied religious backgrounds from 15 different areas learn, live, and praise together during these summer sessions. Making disciples in the nations, was the big focus and goal this year, helping the children as they grow physically, mentally and spiritually.
“I consider Children the reward from God, that they are very much loved by Jesus Christ, for they belong to the Kingdom of God,” shares Rev. Liana.
Please pray for the continued reach and impact of these summer sessions.[Submitted: Rev. Ro Ding Liana]

Expert tips for leading your group members to spiritual growth
Pat J. Sikora
I had been a Christian for exactly one week when some people at a church I was trying out invited me to lunch. Having been a very successful (read: worldly) pagan, I had no idea what to expect. What I met was a group of crazy, wonderful, dedicated people who welcomed me with open arms, despite my decidedly un-Christian appearance. Kathleen invited me to a coffee hour at her home that evening. Luree invited me to dinner later in the week. Susan invited me to the women’s Bible study. And Monica offered to disciple me—whatever that was! And thus began my wild and wonderful ride of growing in Christ.
Monica and I were two busy professional women, but we’d meet for a quick dinner between work and meetings. In the beginning, she just answered all my questions. But in time, she began to shape my understanding of my new faith. She challenged my worldview and taught me how to think biblically. Monica became my safe person, one with whom I could expose my ignorance to her gracious correction. Eventually I did learn what discipleship was—and later I was able to disciple others.
Meanwhile, the women’s group also welcomed and encouraged me. There I learned to study the Bible and apply it to my very tumultuous life. This group had rotating leadership, and though I was happy to be an observer, Susan asked me to try my hand at leading after I’d been attending for six weeks. She encouraged me every step of the way, and you know what? I did it! It wasn’t my finest hour, but I led. And after that, they gave me more opportunities to lead, both in that small group and in the Sunday morning small groups—all because these women took seriously their responsibility to disciple me.
What Is Discipleship?
Discipleship is both modeling and teaching Christians the principles of Scripture—including doctrine, prayer, Christian living, and worship. But the key is teaching Christians to live out those principles. Ephesians 4:12-15 explains it well as equipping “his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.” It’s a lot like parenting: discipleship involves preparing a young Christian for Christian adulthood.
In discipleship we both teach and model what we want our disciples to learn, knowing that who we are is more important than what we teach. Monica, Susan, and the others taught me a lot, but it was their character that motivated me to grow up in the faith. I saw a maturity that I wanted, and I was willing to work for.
Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about discipleship. While discipleship happens in both formal and informal settings—and through all different techniques—I’ve found three keys to successful discipleship:
1. Good Questions
Whether you’re doing a prepared study in a small group or simply handling new believer questions, it’s important to ask good questions. Good questions move the conversation forward, call disciples to discover truth for themselves, require disciples to apply what they know of Scripture, challenge faulty worldviews, and keep disciples coming back for more. Of course, these are good tips for all small-group leaders. If you have baby or immature Christians in your group, though, good questions become crucial.
Avoid Yes or No Answers
Questions that require only a yes, no, or other one-word answer won’t do much to facilitate conversation or discipleship. You’ll learn a lot more about disciples and their thought processes if you ask questions that require longer answers. Then you’ll be able to spot where their thinking goes off base, and thus be better able to offer insights.
2. Avoid Shaming
Any questions that could potentially shame disciples should be avoided—and watch your responses that could potentially shame. New believers, and even those who have been believers a long time, often have odd understandings of the faith. Rather than saying, “No, that’s wrong” or “How could you think that?” try asking, “Hmm, what do you think Paul would say to that?” or “Where do we read that in Scripture?” Point them back to Scripture to discover the truth for themselves in a way that encourages and empowers them rather than shames them.
3. Meet Disciples Where They Are
In the beginning, I had little interest in doctrine. I needed to know who Peter’s mother was (seriously!) and why I had to change my lifestyle. These leaders didn’t push me. They graciously answered my questions and gently led me to the more important issues of the faith. Today when I’m discipling someone either individually or in a group, I usually know pretty quickly what their issue is and what they need to do about it. But I don’t beat them over the head with it. I let them take the lead, and gradually ask questions that move them to the deeper issues.
4. Stress Application
It’s understandable to want to use a prepared Bible study. They often require much less preparation time. But few prepared studies will meet disciples where they are, and they seldom stress application. While it’s crucial to teach doctrine, teach it within the bounds of disciples’ immediate needs. Make sure that whatever you cover, the disciples know what to do with it in real life: How can they apply it at home, at work, or in their internal lives?
5. Beyond Gaining Knowledge
A key skill we need to teach our disciples is how to apply biblical principles to everyday questions and needs. The world is ready with answers to every question, so Christians need to know how to find the answers they need in Scripture. Of course not every answer is in the Bible, so disciples need to learn how to reason biblically—looking to Scripture rather than Dr. Phil.
Application is difficult not just because it sometimes doesn’t seem clear, but also because it often means we must act counterculturally. We need to admit this difficulty to our disciples and walk with them through the challenge. Too many Christians prefer the wisdom of the world, assuming biblical solutions are old-fashioned, judgmental, or meaningless. We need to teach our disciples why and how to be countercultural.
6. Create a Safe Environment
Discipleship is personal, so it’s important to create a safe environment where disciples can explore and grow. Here are three tips for creating safety:
A. Meet in a Safe Place
It isn’t always easy to find physical space for small groups. If you have a family or roommates, your home may not have sufficient privacy. When crying or anger are involved, a coffee shop isn’t a good option. You may need to be creative, but you need to make sure that your disciples have the privacy needed for intimate conversations.
B. Stress Confidentiality
Often in a small group, I share something of my past or even my present that I don’t want broadcast beyond that setting. This actually goes both ways. You want to assure your group members that anything they say belongs to them and neither you nor anyone in the group will share it with anyone, anywhere. The only exception to that is if you believe the group member’s life or another life is in danger. Otherwise, they must know they can trust you—and you must be able to trust them.
C. Avoid Condemnation
Often you will observe or hear of unbiblical lifestyle choices that your disciples are making. If you condemn or sound like Mom or Dad, your disciples will bolt and little will be gained. Asking good questions instead is helpful. Explore the rationale. Do they not know this is wrong? Have they twisted Scripture to make it right? Have they even thought about it? Is it an addiction, a deeply ingrained habit, or a family trait? Once you know those answers you can begin to address the issue. But do so gently and patiently. People don’t change overnight, even if they want to.
Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way and lost a disciple who was dear to me because I came down too hard on her for a behavior that, in retrospect, wasn’t that big of a deal. Now I’m more careful to honor the image of God in each person, and I attempt to love and woo them into a better choice, even if it takes longer.
Discipleship can be one of the most rewarding opportunities for Christians. What a delight to see a person grow up into Christ and the faith! What a joy to see them take on leadership or ministry and become all God created them to be. And we benefit, too. We get to look at things with fresh eyes, which is energizing. But discipleship in groups won’t happen with intentionality and work. Are you up for the challenge?

Holistic discipleship in small groups is possible.
Natasha Sistrunk Robinson, Andrew Wheeler, Heather Zempel, and more
When we start our small groups, we set out with high hopes. We want to see people grow, lives change, and deep relationships form. Without intentionality, though, these things simply don't happen. If we want to see our group members grow, we have to incorporate holistic discipleship strategies into our group meetings. From prayer to Bible reading and from mission to work, discipleship is about our whole lives moving closer to God. This is the sacred work of discipleship—and it's often a lot different from what many of us experience in groups.
Since the beginning of the church, though, God has been using small groups to form his people. The Bible is clear: discipleship happens in community. This training tool will help you understand the importance of discipleship within the context of community and also provide practical tips for incorporating discipleship strategies into your group.

MESSAGE FROM SOUTH AMERICA REGIONAL DIRECTOR – SPECIAL PRAYER FOR ECUADOR APRIL 25-MAY 1
South America: Below is a special message from South America Regional Director Christian Sarmiento. Let us all join him and the rest of the world in prayer for our brothers and sisters in Ecuador. Find out how you can pray and help at this time of need.
Christian Sarmiento, South America Regional Director.
Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ of our beloved church,
Our heart is saddened for our brothers and sisters who suffer today because of the earthquake that shook the Ecuadorian coast on April 16th. The number of deaths within our Nazarene family surpasses the number suffered in our global church in the last years, and in our region in the last decade; and with it comes an entire nation that needs our support.
The Bible invites us to mourn with those that are mourning, and while we share the pain of our brothers and sisters of faith, as the South American Church of the Nazarene we want to rise up together in unity and intercede for Ecuador, so that the God of all grace may comfort our Ecuadorian family and surround them with arms of mercy.
This next week, from April 25th until May 1st, we are inviting our all of the Nazarenes in our region, and all of those that would like to join us in other parts of the world to kneel in a cry for the Ecuadorian people. Just as the Macedonian church mobilized up an offering when they heard the need among the people of the God (2 Corinthians 8), we want to do the same on Sunday May 1st amongst our congregations.
  • Pray for wisdom and strength, for the church leaders in Ecuador who have committed to help the people who are suffering. Let us pray for protection for those affected in areas helping the wounded and those in need. Pray for the government and the decisions that are taking place in response to this catastrophe. Pray especially for the most vulnerable, the children who lost their parents and walk the streets for shelter without protection of their family. Pray also for those looking for a shelter, for those without access to water and for every need that arises so it may be supplied. Finally, let us pray that God will open doors for His people to serve and minister to those affected.
  • All raised offerings can be sent to the office of the mission of the Church of the Nazarene in their country, with the description “Ecuador Earthquake Relief #126156”. Offerings can also be sent through the global site of Nazarene Compassionate Ministry, through the link: https://give.nazarene.org/donate/f/126156
The following includes a list of specific prayer request sent by our brothers and sisters from Ecuador:
  1. Pray for safety of the people in devastated areas, as there are still many aftershocks up to 6.1 degree on the Richter scale. This affects the population in many ways and also makes them fearful.
  2. Pray for the people that are in areas that have not yet received help, because of the damage on the roads. They have very little water and food. Children are holding signs on the side of the road begging for food and water, and parents are giving the food they get to their children to have something to eat.
  3. Pray for our churches while they are ministering in the areas where Nazarene churches are present, bringing in food and water. The rescue teams need prayer so they may be strengthened and remain healthy, while in places where different kinds of viruses could develop rapidly and where there is a great risk of contracting dengue, zika and chikungunya due to mosquito bites. Pray also for safe journeys as they travel to affected areas using roads in terrible conditions.
  4. Pray for wisdom for the Church of the Nazarene, discernment of where and how to minister to the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of those affected.
  5. Pray for our brothers and sisters who in the midst of this crisis are boldly sharing the Gospel in word and deed.
I appreciate your generosity and commitment to pray for our brothers and sisters in Ecuador.
