Nazarene pastor elected leader of Albania's evangelical alliance

At age 27, Ergest Biti is the youngest pastor in Albania’s evangelical community. This January he was elected general secretary of the Evangelical Alliance for the Albanian Church by his colleagues, fulfilling a dream given to an elderly lady in the church where Biti became a believer years ago.
She had told the Christ-follower that one day he would be the pastor of the Albanian church. As general secretary, Biti is now responsible for guiding the Alliance’s 140-plus registered churches in a country where the majority population has a different faith system.
Biti also pastors the Church of the Nazarene in Tirana and serves as president of Nazarene Youth International for Central Europe.
As Biti looks back at that elderly woman’s statement, he is amazed at how “pastor of the Albanian church” now relates to his three different roles.
A 2012 census cited just 3,000 evangelical Christians out of the country’s population of 2.7 million. Biti suggests that the evangelical numbers are significantly higher, estimating 7,000 to 10,000 believers. Yet, Biti says that most Albanians do not understand what the term “evangelical Christian” means.
“When you say ‘church,’ people immediately think Orthodox or Catholic,” he said.
This connection is heavily influenced by the Catholic community’s ethnically Albanian Mother Theresa, born in the neighboring Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. With the addition of Catholicism and Orthodoxy, about 40 percent of Albania’s population is Christian, making it a minority religion.
Biti’s new role charges him to represent the evangelical community to the government and speak into laws that affect religious equality and the representation of religion in textbooks, as well as bring unity among evangelical churches.
“Getting Christians to work together can be hard,” Biti said.
Albania is a geographically large area with relatively few evangelical churches for the size, which means bringing people together is both an economical and a geographical challenge. To this end, geographically linked local churches regularly gather in regional alliances and the Albanian Evangelical Alliance, over which Biti now presides, meets twice per year.
While gathering for official meetings is important, Biti believes that the key to unity comes through personal visitation to local communities. Since his election, he has begun traveling to individual churches in an effort to encourage pastors in ministry and to be a bridge between local congregations. He gives an example of a local body of believers in the south of Albania who are partnering with an orphanage.
“A few years ago, the orphanage held 30 children ranging in age from 2 weeks old to teenagers," he said. "The church people began to proactively seek adoptive families. There are only 12 children left in the orphanage now.”
Biti uses this church as an example of how a local community of faith is doing something beautiful, but that the initiative could be made stronger by working together with other Christian congregations.
In March, Biti met with the Macedonian evangelical community to discuss how the Albanian church can be ready for a possible influx of Middle Eastern refugees. Addressing his Macedonian Evangelical Alliance colleagues, he said, “When we have something that touches us together, it brings us together. We [the evangelical community] will be the people to serve and to speak [about the needs of refugees].”
Biti is finishing the Nazarene Course of Study for ordination and is married to Eda Xhakollari, who is an ordained deacon on the Albania-Kosova District. They have two young daughters.
When asked about the many responsibilities that he carries at such a young age, Biti responded, “We might not think it is God’s time, but it can be God’s time for a person to lead. God has been preparing me from a young age and I will trust him to help me.”[Church of the Nazarene Eurasia Region

ENC announces new vice president of Institutional Advancement

Eastern Nazarene College announced Larry Bollinger was chosen as vice president of Institutional Advancement.
An alumnus of the college, Bollinger returns to ENC after two decades with Nazarene Compassionate Ministries. For the past 12 years, he has served as its director, traveling to more than 100 countries and working with staff to implement global humanitarian programs. As CEO and president of Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Inc. — a separate nonprofit that works with government and foundation programs — Bollinger has overseen multimillion-dollar initiatives funded by USAID and the U.S. Department of Justice.
“We are so pleased to welcome Larry Bollinger back to the campus of Eastern Nazarene College,” said Corlis McGee, ENC president. “Larry’s expertise in marshaling the resources needed for Christians to live out their faith and help those in need will prove invaluable as we work to put a Christian liberal arts education within reach of as many students as possible.”
In addition to a Bachelor of Arts in business administration from ENC, Bollinger holds a master's in business administration from Eastern University and a Doctor of Education in ethical leadership from Olivet Nazarene University. He also completed Harvard University’s Executive Training in Strategic Management for leaders of nongovernmental organizations program.
“It is with great joy that we are coming home to Quincy and to the ENC community,” Bollinger said. “I am inspired by the meaningful tradition of graduating exceptional students with a passion to make a difference in the world.”
Bollinger succeeds Scott Turcott, who will serve ENC as special assistant in an advisory capacity through July 2016 in order to assist with the transition of leadership.[Eastern Nazarene College]

New year celebration leads to baptisms in Myanmar

April marks the new year in most South Asia and Southeast Asian countries. While most of Thailand, where Southeast Asia Nazarene Bible College's main campus is located, celebrates the new year through the Songkran Festival, the college decided to celebrate things differently.
During the Sonkgran break, the Myanmar campus offered a class called Introduction to the New Testament as part of an extension program headed by Professor Peter Lalpek Mawia.
"The program is very unique because it is intended to train and educate lay and bivocational pastors in reaching the Burmese for Christ in Thailand," said Bill Kwon, SEANBC chancellor. "The class had 14 students, with varying educational levels, ages, and genders all having one thing in common: their heart for Christ!"
The class also paved the way for changed lives. During the class, four students expressed their desire to follow Christ and to be baptized.
Kwon officiated the baptism service.
"After the baptism, Win Win, one of the candidates, testified to be a disciple of Christ to begin her ministry in Bangkok," Kwon said. "She is now actively engaged in house church planting. It is such a blessing to have a leader with a vision to reach the immigrant population for the Lord."
The Songkran Festival is also a time for salvation camps where Christians share the gospel through evangelism and the teaching of basic Christian beliefs. Nazarene churches are actively engaged in offering salvation camps in Yangon and other parts of Myanmar.
"Through these efforts, many new souls are saved for the Lord," Kwon said.[Church of the Nazarene Asia-Pacific Region]

Flags of the Nations: South Africa

The South Africa flag was designed to symbolize unity. The red, white, and blue colors were taken from the colors of the Boer Republics. The yellow, black, and green are taken from the African National Congress flag. Black symbolises the people, green the fertility of the land, and gold the mineral wealth beneath the soil.
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: South Africa
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered South Africa in 1919.
South Africa had a population of 53,675,563 in 2015. That same year, South Africa reported 642 Churches of the Nazarene, 522 of which had been officially organized. South Africa has 60,693 total members.
Located on the Africa Region, South Africa has three Phase 2 districts and 13 Phase 3 districts. For more information about the Africa Region, visit africanazarene.org.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole.
The Global Ministry Center is the mission and service hub of the Church of the Nazarene.Read more

Trevecca students create original opera
Nashville, Tennesse
(New Channel 5, April 22) Students from Trevecca Nazarene University went above and beyond what was necessary for a school research project by creating a full-length opera.
About 70 students from different departments came together to create the original opera.
It was supposed to be a 25 minute, 1 act opera, but it turned into a two hour, two act show called "Requiem for the Living: An Opera."

New Mexico church invites thieves to pray after break-in Albuquerque, New Mexico
(KOB 4, April 29) A local church is struggling to recover after thieves did a lot of damage last Friday to one of their campuses.
Insurance won’t cover the damage at Sandia Mountain Church of the Nazarene on Central Avenue because they had a damaging fire about six years ago. Pastor Steve Marjerison has invited the thieves to come pray with them.
“The church was wrecked,” he said. “They had taken an instrument and broke off the push bar in one of our daycare classrooms.”

Special Olympics returns to PLNU

The Special Olympics Regional Athletics Meet returned to Point Loma Nazarene University's campus for the 23rd consecutive year to celebrate the joy of sport for all athletes.
Sponsored by Point Loma's Department Family & Consumer Sciences, the School of Education, and the PLNU Athletics Department, nearly 300 PLNU students, faculty, and staff and countless community members from across San Diego joined together April 23 to serve 250 athletes and their families.
The event also received community support.
“[Gold-medal sponsor Geico Insurance's] support wasn’t limited to a monetary donation," said Susan Rogers, event director. "Geico employees joined with PLNU volunteers to serve athletes and their families to make this event memorable for each individual.”
A regular presence at the annual event, police officers from the cities of Coronado and San Diego were on hand to encourage and congratulate each athlete. The Chula Vista Kiwanis Club provided a barbecue lunch and San Diego County Parks and Recreation were also on hand to support the event.
"Personally for me, one of the best Athletics Meets ever, once again our students are the key,” said Jim Johnson, longtime event organizer and Special Olympics supporter. “Comments about their love and genuineness reflect why this event is indeed a premier banner for what PLNU represents to the community and who are students really are as servant leaders.”

This year’s event was especially significant to the university community as it was dedicated to the life and memory of Beryl Pagan, who passed away on April 18. She was an instructional services librarian at PLNU, her alma mater, and was an advocate for persons with disabilities.
“It was a glorious day,” Rogers said. “Moreover, we were able to honor our dear friend, Beryl Pagan. She was honored in the opening ceremony with a tribute and bowls of candy in her memory.”
The Athletics Meet was another testament to PLNU’s commitment to the mission and vision of the Special Olympics. In addition to the annual track meet, last summer PLNU joined with 100 other communities across Southern California as a part of the Special Olympics World Games Host Town program. In advance of the Opening Ceremonies in July 2015, more than 7,000 athletes from 177 countries were welcomed to Southern California. The San Diego Point Loma Host Town welcomed athletes from Albania, Burkina Faso, and Finland for three days to prepare for the games.[Point Loma Nazarene University]

Former Trevecca professor passes away

Ann Fuqua, former professor of biology at Trevecca Nazarene University, passed away April 27.
Chris Farrell, professor emeritus of biology, worked with Fuqua for many years, from 1995 until her retirement in 2007. He remembers a kind friend, a teacher who loved her students, but wasn’t particularly known for punctuality.
“She would call me and say ‘I’m going to be a few minutes late. Would you go tell my class?’” he remembered. “She was not an early morning person, but she could stay up until 2 or 3 a.m. working on a variety of projects.”
Farrell lauded Fuqua’s dedication to her students and teaching. She often offered summer classes to help area teachers learn how to better teach science in their classrooms, Farrell said.
Sam Stueckle, professor of mathematics, agreed.
“Dr. Ann Fuqua was one of the most compassionate and wise people I have ever known,” he said. “She cared very deeply about her students. As a department chair, she was always available if I needed to talk. She would always patiently listen and then have wise words to say.”
Lena Welch, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, knew of Fuqua when she was a student at Trevecca, though she never had her as a professor.
“I recognized even then that she was a woman in a leadership position at a time when there really weren’t a lot of women in positions of leadership,” Welch said.
Later, when Welch became a member of Trevecca’s faculty, she remembers Fuqua as an unofficial mentor of sorts. Fuqua offered advice and insight that Welch treasured.
“She was a woman with a sense of humor, a quick smile, and was always encouraging,” Welch said. “She was so instrumental in making Trevecca what it is today. Dr. Fuqua paved the way for all women who are in leadership positions. She was exceptional.”
In lieu of flowers, the Fuqua family asks that gifts be made to the Fuqua Biology Scholarship at Trevecca Nazarene University. Checks may be made payable to Trevecca with Fuqua Memorial written on the memo line. Gifts may also be made online at trevecca.edu/give.[Trevecca Nazarene University]

Bus delivery
On a bus headed to Itahari, Nepal, a young woman, Maiya, went into labor. On the same bus was a team of Nazarene Missions International and Nazarene Compassionate Ministries workers who, despite their pleas for the driver to stop, ended up delivering the baby as the bus sped to its destination. When everyone arrived, the Nazarene teams helped the young woman connect with her family. Maiya said she was happy to have help from the unfamiliar women during her crisis and she felt Christ’s love through these loving people. For more details, read the full story in the April 2016 edition of Where Worlds Meet.
JESUS Film - Dominican Republic
“I was in jail over and over,” said Ricardo in the Dominican Republic. “I was an angry, aggressive person who would pick fights for no reason. My friends rejected me. I was alone. Watching the JESUS film, I felt something special happen in my life. When they asked people to accept Christ in their hearts, I did not know what to do. I went to the front to pray with a team member. Now, I tell others Jesus can change people. I know because He changed me!”

While we regret that we cannot respond to each applicant, we do contact those individuals possessing the skills, education/training, and experience that best match the requirements of the open position for which the application was submitted.
An application must be completed by all applicants and an application must be completed for each position for which one wishes to be considered. Applications are retained for one year. Resumés are not necessary for entry-level positions, but they are preferred for professional level positions.
