The First United Methodist Church of Redondo Beach, California, United States eNews: "Mother's Day & more" Mother's Day - Children's Choir sings at 10:30 Give to Imagine No Malaria in support of Mothers! for Thursday, 5 May 2016

From Pastor Molly: For Mothers
Today, I got to start off my Mother's Day celebration with a program at my son's preschool. (It was pretty sweet: he drew a picture that says: "My mom makes me happy. She cuddles with me." This is good stuff.)
At its best, though, Mother's Day is about even more than these beautiful affirmations of love--it's an occasion to remember our call to work for peace and for the well-being of all God's children, everywhere.
In the old days, it was a tradition to wear a carnation in honor of your mother (not, as I would have assumed, to give flowers TO your mother).
This Mother's Day, we are making a donation to "Imagine No Malaria" in honor of our mothers, and mothers around the world who face significant challenges to health. There are other efforts in the church to advocate for maternal health programs in honor of Mother's Day. I invite you to join these efforts, or to find another way of honoring moms by working for a better world.[Pastor Molly Vetter]
I will be here this Sunday, but away from Tuesday the 10th through Saturday the 21st, at our United Methodist General Conference in Portland, Oregon.

In Worship This Week
Sunday, May 8 Acts 16:16-34
Scripture Text:
Acts 16:16 Once, when we were going to the place where the minyan gathered, we were met by a slave girl who had in her a snake-spirit that enabled her to predict the future. She earned a lot of money for her owners by telling fortunes. 17 This girl followed behind Sha’ul and the rest of us and kept screaming, “These men are servants of God Ha‘Elyon! They’re telling you how to be saved!” 18 She kept this up day after day, until Sha’ul, greatly disturbed, turned and said to the spirit, “In the name of Yeshua the Messiah, I order you to come out of her!” And the spirit did come out, at that very moment.
19 But when her owners saw that what had come out was any further prospect of profit for them, they seized Sha’ul and Sila and dragged them to the market square to face the authorities. 20 Bringing them to the judges, they said, “These men are causing a lot of trouble in our city, since they are Jews. 21 What they are doing is advocating customs that are against the law for us to accept or practice, since we are Romans.” 22 The mob joined in the attack against them, and the judges tore their clothes off them and ordered that they be flogged. 23 After giving them a severe beating, they threw them in prison, charging the jailer to guard them securely. 24 Upon receiving such an order, he threw them into the inner cell and clamped their feet securely between heavy blocks of wood.
25 Around midnight, Sha’ul and Sila were praying and singing hymns to God, while the other prisoners listened attentively. 26 Suddenly there was a violent earthquake which shook the prison to its foundations. All the doors flew open and everyone’s chains came loose. 27 The jailer awoke, and when he saw the doors open he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, for he assumed that the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Sha’ul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We’re all here!”
29 Calling for lights, the jailer ran in, began to tremble and fell down in front of Sha’ul and Sila. 30 Then, leading them outside, he said, “Men, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They said, “Trust in the Lord Yeshua, and you will be saved — you and your household!” 32 Whereupon they told him and everyone in his household the message about the Lord.
33 Then, even at that late hour of the night, the jailer took them and washed off their wounds; and without delay, he and all his people were immersed. 34 After that, he brought them up to his house and set food in front of them; and he and his entire household celebrated their having come to trust in God.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for: Acts 16:16-34
Verse 17
[17] The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.
These men are — A great truth: but St. Paul did not need, nor would accept, of such testimony.
Verse 19
[19] And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers,
The magistrates — The supreme magistrates of the city. In the next verse they are called by a title which often signifies pretors. These officers exercised both the military and civil authority.
Verse 20
[20] And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,
Being Jews — A nation peculiarly despised by the Romans.
Verse 21
[21] And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.
And teach customs which it is not lawful for us to receive — The world has received all the rules and doctrines of all the philosophers that ever were. But this is a property of Gospel truth: it has something in it peculiarly intolerable to the world.
Verse 23
[23] And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:
They laid many stripes upon them — Either they did not immediately say they were Romans, or in the tumult it was not regarded.
Charging the jailer — Perhaps rather to quiet the people than because they thought them criminal.
Verse 24
[24] Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
Secured their feet in the stocks — These were probably those large pieces of wood, in use among the Romans, which not only loaded the legs of the prisoner, but also kept them extended in a very painful manner.
Verse 25
[25] And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
Paul and Silas sung a hymn to God — Notwithstanding weariness, hunger stripes, and blood.
And the prisoners heard — A song to which they were not accustomed.
Verse 28
[28] But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.
But Paul cried — As they were all then in the dark, it is not easy to say, how Paul knew of the jailer's purpose; unless it were by some immediate notice from God, which is by no means incredible.
With a loud voice — Through earnestness, and because he was at some distance.
Do thyself no harm — Although the Christian faith opens the prospect into another life, yet it absolutely forbids and effectually prevents a man's discharging himself from this.
Verse 30
[30] And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
Sirs — He did not style them so the day before.
What must I do to be saved? — From the guilt I feel and the vengeance I fear? Undoubtedly God then set his sins in array before him, and convinced him in the clearest and strongest manner that the wrath of God abode upon him.
Verse 31
[31] And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
Thou shalt be saved and thy household — If ye believe. They did so, and were saved.
Verse 33
[33] And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
He washed their stripes — It should not be forgot, that the apostles had not the power of working miraculous cures when they pleased, either on themselves, or their dearest friends. Nor was it expedient they should, since it would have frustrated many wise designs of God, which were answered by their sufferings.
Verse 34
[34] And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.
He set a table before them and rejoiced — Faith makes a man joyful, prudent, liberal.

And we won’t tag along behind.

And we won’t tag along behind.
Roll the gospel chariot along
We will roll the gospel chariot along

"Mother's Love" by Jim & Eileen Raycroft
Thank you for watching over me
All of the sleepless nights you lay awake
Thank you for knowing when to hold me close
and when to let me go
Thank you for every stepping stone
And for the path that always leads me home
I thank you for the time you took
to see the heart inside of me
You gave me the roots to start this life
and then you gave me wings to fly
And I learned to dream
Because you believed in me
There's no power like it on this earth
No treasure equal to its worth
The gift of a mother's love
Thank you for every sunlit day
That filled the corners of my memory
Thank you for every selfless unsung deed
I know you did for me
Thank you for giving me the choice
To search my soul till I could find my voice
And I thank you for teaching me
To be strong enough to bend
You gave me the roots to start this life
and then you gave me wings to fly
And I learned to dream
Because you believed in me
There's no power like it on this earth
No treasure equal to its worth
The gift of a mother's love
I thank God for a mother's love

I used to have a friend who promised his Mother he would continue attending church. Well, on Mother's day, or the closest Sunday, he did attend, once a year. I always felt he reneged on his promise, but he never agreed.
So, [Sunday] is Mother's Day, a Sunday to remember and those of us who have lost our Mothers surely do just that. I can truly say that nearly every day which passes since my mother's leaving in 2000, I remember her with affection and love, such as the love she gave me. She was four days short of 103 years young when she died and had been ill just a short three weeks at that time.
So, now our church looks forward to another guest preacher, who is no guest to many of us. He is Rev. Winfried Ritter who, along with his wife, Maria, led a tour of Germany (their home country), Switzerland, Austria and Italy in 1990 while he was Pastor of our church...My gosh, that was most 26 years ago. About 25 members of our church and friends made the trip including Duff and Nancy Means, Paul Caldwell and myself and others. Rev. Ritter will be our guest preacher Sunday, May 15, so plan to attend.
Editor's Note: Since the writing of this article, we have learned that Rev. Ritter will not be preaching here on May 15, as he is suffering with kidney stones. Please hold him in your prayers! We will look for another opportunity to invite him back, soon.

A Mother's Day Gift from Church
Like last year, instead of giving flowers to mothers at church on Mother's Day this year, we are making a gift to support mothers in need around the world. This year, we will make a gift to Imagine No Malaria, in honor of all our mothers (and those who mother us).
You are invited to make an extra gift to INM, too, in honor of mothers--just mark your gift "Mother's Day."
Through education, bed nets & more, $10 is able to make a difference and save a life.

Our United Methodist campaign to eradicate malaria has reached 90% of our goal--but there's still a ways to go! Our congregation has raised $18,400 toward our $20,000 goal. We are asked to submit our donations by May, but gifts are still welcome after that.

Children's Choir: Mother's Day
Kids (age 3 - 5th grade) are invited to join in a special Children's Choir to sing on Mother's Day. There will be one final rehearsal before worship onSunday, May 8, starting at 10am in the sanctuary. Learn the song online!

June 12: Celebrating All Graduates
In the June 12 bulletin, we would like to recognize those individuals who are graduating (at any level). If you have a family member who you'd like to include, please email Ernie in the church office, with their name, relationship to you, the school they're graduating from (and any degree/program information), as well as plans for what they will do next (if that applies). Please get us your information by Tuesday, June 7.

Pentecost is May 15!
Celebrate the Holy Spirit
Celebrate the Holy Spirit, which gave birth to the church at Pentecost! We will have spirit-filled songs, testimonies and some special effects to share in worship. Join us for this meaningful day of celebration in worship!
We had previously shared that Rev. Winfried Ritter would be our preacher on Pentecost; unfortunately, he isn't able to join us then, because of a health concern. We will look for another day to welcome him, soon, and pray for him in the meantime!
Support the Baja Trip!
On May 15, Baja Trip participants will begin selling stock to our Baja Mission 2016. We are trying to raise $6025!
Buying stock entitles stock holders to free attendance at our Stock-Holders Meeting & Report on August 14th! We will report in, show pictures, and let stock-holders know what we did with their investments.
Buying different values of stock also comes with various other perks. Stop by our booth on the church patio to find out more!
