From Pastor Molly: being church
For the past 10 days, I've been here in Portland for our General Conference of the United Methodist Church (UMC). The days have been full, with inspiring preaching from our bishops each morning, beautiful conversations with church leaders from around the world, and lots of hours of contentious debate and paralyzing procedure as we consider legislative matters.
It's a wild time to be the church, and the UMC is certainly in the midst of some dramatic change. In the US--and particularly in our region--the role of the church in our culture has changed a lot in the last few decades. As it becomes less common to belong to church, there's also a vitality and strength that comes from our choice for belonging. Meanwhile, the church is growing in other parts of the world. Our UMC includes congregations in Africa, the Philippines and Europe, who make up increasing percentages of our decision-making body.
The church is doing amazing things in so many places--welcoming refugees, ending malaria, educating new generations of leaders, and more. It includes people of all ages and races, men and women, gay and straight, rich and poor. Sometimes, it's hard to talk together, and seems impossible to agree on things. I'm inspired that, in spite of the challenges, we try to be the church God is calling us to be.
I've said it before: one of my favorite things about church is that at church we are together with people who we would otherwise probably never hang out with. And we don't just tolerate each other: we are asked to see Christ in each other.
I feel grateful for the chance to be here, and privileged to be a part of the UMC.
I look forward to coming back home this weekend, and seeing you all![Pastor Molly Vetter]

"Wisdom"
Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31
Scripture Text for Proverbs 8:1 Wisdom is calling!
Understanding is raising her voice!
2 On the heights along the road,
where the paths meet, she is standing;
3 by the gates leading into the city,
at the entrances, she cries aloud:
4 “People, I am calling you,
raising my voice to all mankind.
22 “Adonai made me as the beginning of his way,
the first of his ancient works.
23 I was appointed before the world,
before the start, before the earth’s beginnings.
24 When I was brought forth, there were no ocean depths,
no springs brimming with water.
25 I was brought forth before the hills,
before the mountains had settled in place;
26 he had not yet made the earth, the fields,
or even the earth’s first grains of dust.
27 When he established the heavens, I was there.
When he drew the horizon’s circle on the deep,
28 when he set the skies above in place,
when the fountains of the deep poured forth,
29 when he prescribed boundaries for the sea,
so that its water would not transgress his command,
when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
30 I was with him as someone he could trust.
For me, every day was pure delight,
as I played in his presence all the time,.
31 playing everywhere on his earth,
and delighting to be with humankind.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31
Verse 1
[1] Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?
Wisdom — It is a great question what this wisdom is. Some understand it of the Divine wisdom; others of the second person in the Godhead: and it cannot be denied that some passages best agree to the former, and others to the latter opinion. Possibly both may be joined together, and the chapter may be understood of Christ considered partly in his personal capacity, and partly in regard of his office, which was to impart the mind and will of God to mankind.
Verse 2
[2] She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.
High place — Where she may be best seen and heard.
Paths — Where many paths meet, where there is a great concourse, and where travellers may need direction.
Verse 3
[3] She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.
Gates — The places of judgment, and of the confluence of people.
The entry — To invite passengers at their first coming and to conduct them to her house.
The doors — Of her house.
Verse 4
[4] Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.
O men — To all men without exception.
Verse 22
[22] The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
Possessed me — As his son by eternal generation, before the beginning.
Of old — His works of creation.
Verse 23
[23] I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
Set up — Heb. anointed, constituted to be the person by whom the Father resolved to do all his works, to create, to uphold and govern and judge, to redeem and save the world.
From the beginning — Before which, there was nothing but a vast eternity.
The earth — Which together with the heaven, was the first of God's visible works.
Verse 24
[24] When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.
No depths — No abyss or deep waters.
Brought forth — Begotten of my father.
Verse 26
[26] While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
The earth — The dry land called earth after it was separated from the waters Genesis 1:10.
Fields — The plain and open parts of the earth distinguished from the mountains.
Dust — Of this lower part of the world which consists of dust.
Verse 27
[27] When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
I was there — As co-worker with my Father.
Depth — Of that great abyss of water and earth mixed together, which is called both earth and water and the deep, Genesis 1:2, when he made this lower world in the form of a globe.
Verse 28
[28] When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
Strengthened — When he shut up the fountains in the cavities of the earth, and kept them there as it were by a strong band.
The deep — Which have their original from the deep, either from the sea, or from the abyss of waters in the bowels of the earth.
Verse 31
[31] Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.
My delights were — To uphold them by my power and providence, to reveal myself and my Father's will to them from age to age, to assume their nature, and to redeem and save them.

Today I would like to title this article as follows: “A Serendipity Story” or “God works in Mysterious Ways.” You will soon see why.
A few weeks ago Pastor Molly Vetter announced that on Sunday, May 15 she would be in Portland, Oregon attending our denomination's General Conference, a once every four years event. She also said she had arranged for one of our church's retired Ministers to preach that Sunday. It was to be Rev. Winfried Ritter, a friend of mine and of many others who are still in our congregation. You see, he served us from 1984 for several years including our Centennial Year, 1987.
Then, Sunday, May 8th Pastor Molly announced that due to Rev. Ritter's illness, he couldn't make it and she had arranged for Rev. Kapp L. Johnson to preach May 15th. You may have read of his position as a faculty member at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks and him being a Pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of North America.
Last Sunday, May 15, I was serving as a greeter at the North door of our sanctuary and as Rev. Kapp Johnson arrived, we began to visit while people came in. We shook hands with several and one elderly couple passed through, after which Rev. Kapp asked me their names, remarking that he thought he knew the gentleman. I told him I didn't recall ever seeing the couple before.
Later, following the service they visited and Rev. Kapp told me the man, first name Hans, had been one of his professors at the Claremont School of Theology. Well, they had a great reunion and visit the rest of the morning.
I was visiting with Mrs. Christal and she told me that Hans had retired from teaching at a Chicago Theology School and was spending his retirement writing books. She told me that their son was living here in Manhattan Beach and they were visiting for just two weeks and happened to rent a place across the street from our church and, being United Methodists, came to our service. What an unusual sequence of activities.
I and others sitting in front last week were surprised and covered with streamers as [the Pentecost story] was being [read by Sally Donner]. The colorful explosion of streamers startled everyone and made the sanctuary very festive. It was a great service. See you this Sunday.

Music Notes by Jim Raycroft
"Henry Purcell was an English composer who lived a short 35 years in the late 1600’s, but had a profound impact on the world of music. He was a chorister with the Chapel Royal and studied at Westminster School. Thursday, May 19, 2016 --Music Notes by Jim Raycroft Henry Purcell was an English composer who lived a short 35 years in the late 1600’s, but had a profound impact on the world of music. He was a chorister with the Chapel Royal and studied at Westminster School. He was the most renowned native-born English composer until Elgar, and his opera “Dido and Aeneas” is part of classic repertoire. In 1679, he was appointed organist at Westminster Abbey, and devoted himself exclusively to the writing of sacred music for the next 6 years. His anthem “Rejoice In The Lord Alway”, also known as the “Bell Anthem”, is one of his most popular, and features a solo trio as well as the full choir.
A lesser-known fact about Purcell is that he was on a crusade to bring more sophisticated music to the pubs of England. We all know how Charles Wesley would take a bar song and turn it into a hymn by writing sacred lyrics to it. Purcell would take typically raunchy pub song lyrics and set them to sophisticated musical settings, in an effort to get the pub dwellers to sing a little more “highbrow”. The next time you’re on YouTube, check out “Pox On You”. It’s a hoot.
This Sunday after church, we’re meeting in the music room to choose the solos for We Are The World. If you’d like to sing a solo with the band, be there. You can hear it on YouTube (the original version). The more, the merrier.
Next Sunday we debut our series Famous Postludes. You won’t want to miss it. Be there or be sorry.

The California-Pacific Conference has introduced Safe Gatherings, an online abuse prevention program that screens and educates staff and volunteers to help prevent abuse of children, youth, and vulnerable adults in group settings.
Our congregation's staff and volunteers are participating in this program which includes an application, background check, and the online training every three years. (Some of you may have already received invitations to participate in the screening or provide a reference for one of our volunteers.)
We are excited to be a part of this new program as we continue to grow and offer a safe space for all.

We have many spots to fill for liturgists on Sunday mornings. The following link will take you the sign up. Please check it out.
