Pastor Brian’s Faith Works
Dear friends in Christ,
This has been a wild and wonderful year, full of unpredictable gifts and possibilities. I am proud and blessed by the strong and faithful and courageous way that you have approached our outreach to the new Hope Korean Community. I am writing this one day after the first Korean worship service, which
went wonderfully. Thanks be to God. This has taken an unprecendented level of preparation and relational work. Thank you.
This year we also have experienced a huge and wonderful Youth Confirmation Class, a new Youth Choir (called “Axios” or “Worthy”), and a growing Children’s Choir.
We have experienced a unity of heart and love in the face of a bitterly contentious election season. We affirm our unity in Jesus Christ, who is bigger than all that could divide us.
Church Conference November 27: On Sunday, November 27 we are meeting for a “Leftover Potluck” at noon and an “All Church Conference” at 12:45. One key change is that we are not voting on an ongoing Korean Congregation at this Church Conference. That will happen in February, after we have at least 12 weeks of experience in our trial start of the Korean Service.
God bless you and keep you, in health and in strengthened love for God, for neighbor, and for your self.
In Jesus Christ,
Pastor Brian

PRESCHOOL HAPPENINGS
Our Preschool students have been out and about in our community this year. The whole school went to the Pumpkin Patch here in Rancho Bernardo and had a wonderful time and the weather held out for the Preschool this year.
The Preschool would like to give a great big thank you to the congregation of Hope United Methodist Church for making our Preschool Sunday and Harvest Festival and Silent Auction a huge success! We had more people attend it than in the years past and were able to raise over $3000 which will be going into the playground fund to replace the bark on the Preschool Playground. It was wonderful to see all the Preschool Families as well as all the families in the congregation interacting with one another on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
I want to send a special thank you for all the members of the Preschool Board, including Danna Staples, Dee Tenney, Suzi Maley, Carrie Jaquess and all the extra effort they put into the Harvest Festival to make it such a great success. Thank you to Ralph Staples and Rob Foster for grilling the hot dogs for everyone to enjoy.
The entire staff is going to be attending the
NAEYC (National Association of the Education of Young Children) the weekend of November 4th and 5th and they will be attending a variety of classes including music and movement, math, science and literacy in the classroom.
We appreciate working with Hope UMC to spread
God’s love to the children and families in the community.

MISSIONS CORNER
While many people think of December as the
busiest month of the year, we of the
Outreach/Missions Com. often find November is
almost as hectic! There are several major events this month:
Alternative Christmas, Nov. 12-13, before and
after all services. This is a great opportunity to support our missions and provide meaningful gifts for those on your gift list.
Thanksgiving Meal bags are due back at Alternative Christmas. These food bags provide a holiday meal for families being served by the MetroGood Neighbor Center. If you prefer to make a monetary donation, just make it to Hope, put it in the green Special Offering envelope and mark it “Thanksgiving Meals.” Christmas Meal bags will be available to pick up at Alternative Christmas and later in November. Each bag has a list of food items to include.
Hope for Injured Warriors also has a list of food and household items needed by those recovering at Freedom Station and Barracks 26—due back at Alternative Christmas. If you missed a chance to pick up a list, Norma Dahlvig, coordinator of Hope for Injured Warriors, will be at Alternative
Christmas and happy to assist you.
The Good Neighbor Center (GNC) is the recipient of our Special Offering for the month of November.
It recently relocated to Christ (UMC)
Ministry Center in Normal Heights and serves as a drop in center for adults and families, offering emergency food and clothing, as well as contact information for community services. Members of our committee regularly take the food collected in our food cart to the GNC or to Interfaith Community
Services in Escondido.
Christ Ministry Center has also been housing the refugees coming from Haiti and is very appreciativeof all the support given by the people of Hope to those in such need. They have processed about 3000 refugees and there are about 3000 more in Tijuana, many sleeping in the streets. Because of national security concerns and the need for more thorough vetting of refugees, the Dept. of Homeland
Security is now approving only about five
refugees a day. We will keep you updated on this difficult situation.
Interfaith Community Services was the recipient of our October Special Offering. Over $2000 was donated for this worthwhile organization, which Hope helped to start and which served 16,000 people last year. Interfaith has just opened a satellite
location at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 14280
Poway Road, Poway, to bring a continuum of supportive services to low-income community members in Poway and Rancho Bernardo. The office is open Mon., Thurs., and Fri. from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and is looking for volunteers to help with intake.
For more information on volunteering, contact
Micki Hickox, 760-489-6380 ext. 204.
Please keep our committee chairman, Carol
Millspaugh, and her family in your prayers as they deal with difficult health issues. And, join us for our next meeting, Nov. 28, 7 PM, Jones 6.
In this month of Thanksgiving, thank you, the
people of Hope, for all you are giving! — Terry Sieck, assistant chair, Outreach/Missions Committee
DEAR HOPE FAMILY,
Recently I have been collecting pop tabs from
aluminum cans to support the Ronald McDonald
House Charities in San Diego. They recycle them, and the money supports families with children in the hospital that stay at the local Ronald McDonald House. We are blessed to have so many outreach opportunities at Hope UMC, but this one is easy and doesn't cost anything. If you would like to start saving with me that would be great! I will
update you soon with information on when and
where at the church to bring them. Please call if you have any questions.

MUSIC NOTES
This November, the music ministry welcomes our new friends from the Hope Korean Community (HKC) to join us through music, in worship, in fellowship, and in sharing our lives with one another.
Through prayer, conversations, planning, and
through God's guidance, we are excited to start this new journey together! Come and hear the Joyful Noise Children's choir at any or all services on Nov. 12 & 13. Also, on the 13th, our Hope Ringers will play "Canticle of Joy," with Claire Jones on flute! Pastor Brian will play percussion with the choirs on Nov. 20. and clarinetist, Geoff Gaebe, will play with the choirs on Nov. 27. The
weekend of Nov. 26 & 27 marks the first weekend of Advent! Christmas will be here before we know it! The SNA band will be working on some new songs for our Christmas season, and Hope Ringers has a special Christmas treat in store for us on Dec. 4. If you are interested in any aspect of the music ministry, talk to any choir, band, or bell member, or contact Wendy Kallen, director of music, at wendy.kallen@hopeumc.com, or Ginny Lorenz, choir manager, at jlorenz5@san.rr.com. If you are interested in the children's or youth choirs, contact Kathy Askins, our children's music director, at katstrich@sbcglobal.net.
