The L'Arche Canada of Toronto, Ontario, Canada Daily Thoughts with Jean Vanier for Tuesday, 8 November 2016 "Human Growth"
The hardest step of all human growth may well be that from the child's dependence on and aggression towards its parents, to a friendship and dialogue with them, which recognizes their grace and gifts.[Jean Vanier, Community and Growth, page 236]
-------
The relationship people have with authority is often linked to the relationship they had as children with their parents. When this was difficult the children may be left with a lasting anger and suspicion of all authority. They will rebel against a leader. The relationship is a complicated one and it is hard to talk together with simplicity and truth because everything is colored by childish fears and attitudes.[Jean Vanier, Community and Growth, page 235]
-------
We are often too dependent on the people with responsibility [in community]. We look constantly for their approval. We become servile. And then, discontented with our own servility, we criticize them behind their backs. The leader often attracts either servility or aggression.[Jean Vanier, Community and Growth, page 235]
