Weekly eNote from Pastor Scott Chrostek for Friday, January 27, 2017 from The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Downtown in Kansas City, Missouri, United States

Greetings RezDowntowners,
I am excited to write you this morning as it has been an absolutely great week of ministry in downtown Kansas City. It has also been a great week of celebration! First and foremost, I am pleased to be able to share that on Monday, Pastor Anne Williams celebrated the birth of her son, Reid Addison Williams. We are so excited for Anne and her family (Eric and Jude). For the next several weeks, Pastor Anne will be out on maternity leave, so please be sure to direct any pastoral care questions/concerns to Pastor Patrick and I. We will be happy and privileged to walk with you through whatever you may be facing. In the meantime, please know what a great opportunity it has been to be able to celebrate new life within our church community this week. Both Anne and little Reid are doing wonderfully!
On Tuesday night Pastor Adam hosted an all-church gathering at Resurrection West where we spent time reflecting over all that God has done across our campuses over the past year. The meeting was a time to share in the movement and power of God’s Spirit across all of our campuses. In that same vein, tonight at 7:00pm we are hosting a similar event to focus specifically on the mission and ministry of Resurrection Downtown. Starting at 7:00pm in our McGee sanctuary we will be hosting an hour long gathering to celebrate the past year as well as dream about the future. In that meeting, I’ll be sharing statistics and several critical updates about our building project, including some drawings, timelines and pivotal dates happening in the very near future. You will not want to miss this evening as we will be sharing a preliminary first look at what God is doing through our Building.
This weekend in worship we’ll be continuing our sermon series on Unafraid as we look closely at the fear of failure. In the meantime, below you’ll find several ways to get connected to our congregation in addition to the several names of our newest members who joined RezDT at coffee with the pastors!
All Church Gathering: Downtown Style. Join us tonight at 7:00pm in the sanctuary at 1522 McGee for our 'All Church Gathering.' The Gathering is an evening set aside for the members of Resurrection Downtown to reflect over all that God has done in the past year and celebrate. It is also a time to make plans for the year ahead. Pastor Scott will lead us through this hour long gathering where we'll spend time focusing on updates concerning our new building, details surrounding our capital campaign, and worship trends and statistics. We'll also do a bit of dreaming surrounding how God might be calling us to reach out into the community over 2017. In addition to all of that, Pastor Adam will also share his greetings and dreams for RezDT via video! I hope you'll join us for this very important evening.
The Inspired For Life Women’s Conference is coming up Friday, February 3, and Saturday, February 4, at our Leawood campus. This 2-day conference will feature speakers Rachel Held Evans and Sarah Bessey. If you’d like to be included in the RezDowntown group, please contact Shannon.Endicott@cor.org. To register for the conference, go to InspiredForLifeConference.org.

Practical Strategies for Facing Fear. In January, Pastor Adam will be leading us through a sermon series called Unafraid: Living Life with Courage and Hope. If you’d like to dive deeper into this topic, on Saturday, February 4, 9:00-12:00 at Grand, Resurrection Downtown’s counseling intern, Sarah VanMattson will lead us in a conversation about fear and anxiety and their effects on the brain and behavior. We will explore techniques and tools to cope with fear and anxiety when we encounter them so we can truly face all of life’s unknowns with courage and hope. Childcare will be available with registration at cor.org/downtown/facingfear.
Souper Bowl Food Drive
Its time for our annual Souper Bowl of Caring food drive! The Chiefs won't be playing so let's win in another way for our community! Drop non-perishable items off at the church between now and Feb 12. Healthy proteins are always in high demand so try to include them in your offering if you can. Our collection will go to support the pantry at Reconciliation Services, one of our FaithWork Partner agencies. They serve lower income and elderly residents on the Eastside of downtown Kansas City.
2nd Annual SWAT Super Bowl Party (for singles 35+). Come watch the game, or, AT LEAST, the commercials, Sunday, Feb 5th at 4:30pm. We will be meeting at the Atriums West Loft, 612 Central Street, KCMO. Plan to bring something to eat or drink and consider a suggested donation of $5 to cover the room rental fee. RSVP to Stephanie Meyers at smeyers91@gmail.com or 717-514-0334.
Meals Ministry – If you have a heart for serving friends who are grieving, adjusting to life with a new baby or recovering from surgery, consider joining the Meals Ministry. We cook meals and deliver them to homes for short-term needs as a way of sharing the light of Christ when life is complicated. Contact Lindsay McCoy Lentz at lklentz320@gmail.com for more information.
Serve in Honduras June 3-10 with our partner church in El Obraje – Honduras is a beautiful country with beautiful people. Take a week out of your busy schedule to grow in your faith as you support and encourage our Honduran partners. This team will help build the church both physically (light construction) and humanly (inviting the community to sports and craft events at the church). The deadline for registering is February 3. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity – sign up at cor.org/honduras. For more information, contact Patrick.McLaughlin@cor.org.
Volunteer Tax Preparers
. Nextstepkc.org working with MU Extension, AmeriCorps and the local community is helping elderly and lower income residents in our neighborhood file their tax returns. This free service saves them money and could put a little money back in their pockets depending upon their return. There are many opportunities from hospitality, sitting with neighbors doing the paperwork, and auditing the paperwork to satisfy a multitude of volunteer skills and desires. There is training required to work directly with tax documents. If you are interested in connecting in this way, please email pastorpatrick@cor.org and he would be happy to connect with you with more information.
Welcome to our New Members: Harrison Blue, Dick and Julie Conn, Don Dunning, Teresa Eblen, Keith and Margaret Glasch, Carrie and Heather Luce, Morgan McPartland, Ashley and Jason Owen, Jeremy Rieser, Emily Scott.
I am thankful for you and I'm privileged to serve God in Kansas City with you. I'll see you tonight!
Many blessings and God's Peace,
Scott
