Lately, I’ve been overcome with gratitude for the gift of our church community. Several times over the past week, I’ve had occasion to hear of your gratitude. Over and again, I’ve heard about what a difference this church community is making for the people involved and for the community around us.
Last evening, my heart was warmed by the community that gathered to celebrate the 25 years during which we have welcomed hungry people into our Fellowship Hall for Shared Bread. During morning worship yesterday, several of you shared about how you have experienced welcome here and have grown in faith. At Thursday Bible Study, I heard about how meaningful it is to be a part of this community. Every week, I experience the privilege of offering Christ’s grace through the sacrament of Holy Communion. It is a joy and gift to share.
But this church community is just one of the many things for which I am grateful. There are so many blessings around!
As Christians, choosing gratitude does more than give us a better attitude: offering our thanks to God puts us in a posture of humility, and reminds us that we are a part of a life that is bigger than ourselves. We are recipients of blessing and grace that come as gifts from God.
As we celebrate Thanksgiving this week, I invite you to take account of your own gratitude. You can download a prayer worksheet here, which I encourage you to use! Alone or with others, write down specific and particular things that you are grateful for.
We will also be collecting our Thanksgiving Special Offering on Sunday. You can bring your gift in person, send it by mail, or give online (or through OnRealm). Additionally, we encourage you to bring your pledges of financial giving for 2018, for dedication. I look forward to the joy of giving together!
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly

"Don't Stop Giving Thanks"
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
Ephesians 1:15-23
Ephesians 1:15 For this reason, ever since I heard about your trust in the Lord Yeshua and your love for all God’s people, 16 I have not stopped giving thanks for you. In my prayers I keep asking 17 the God of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, the glorious Father, to give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you will have full knowledge of him. 18 I pray that he will give light to the eyes of your hearts, so that you will understand the hope to which he has called you, what rich glories there are in the inheritance he has promised his people, 19 and how surpassingly great is his power working in us who trust him. It works with the same mighty strength he used 20 when he worked in the Messiah to raise him from the dead and seat him at his right hand in heaven, 21 far above every ruler, authority, power, dominion or any other name that can be named either in the ‘olam hazeh or in the ‘olam haba. 22 Also, he has put all things under his feet[Ephesians 1:22 Psalm 8:7(6)] and made him head over everything for the Messianic Community, 23 which is his body, the full expression of him who fills all creation.

John Wesley’s Explanatory Notes
Ephesians 1:15-23
Verse 15
[15] Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,
Since I heard of your faith and love — That is, of their perseverance and increase therein.
Verse 16
[16] Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
I cease not — In all my solemn addresses to God.
To give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers — So he did of all the churches, Colossians 1:9.
Verse 17
[17] That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
That the Father of that infinite glory which shines in the face of Christ, from whom also we receive the glorious inheritance, Ephesians 1:18, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation - The same who is the Spirit of promise is also, in the progress of the faithful, the Spirit of wisdom and revelation; making them wise unto salvation, and revealing to them the deep things of God. He is here speaking of that wisdom and revelation which are common to all real Christians.
Verse 18
[18] The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
The eyes of your understanding — It is with these alone that we discern the things of God. Being first opened, and then enlightened - - By his Spirit.
That ye may know what is the hope of his calling — That ye may experimentally and delightfully know what are the blessings which God has called you to hope for by his word and his Spirit.
And what is the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints — What an immense treasure of blessedness he hath provided as an inheritance for holy souls.
Verse 19
[19] And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
And what the exceeding greatness of his power toward us who believe — Both in quickening our dead souls, and preserving them in spiritual life.
According to the power which he exerted in Christ, raising him from the dead — By the very same almighty power whereby he raised Christ; for no less would suffice.
Verse 20
[20] Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
And he hath seated him at his own right hand — That is, he hath exalted him in his human nature, as a recompence for his sufferings, to a quiet, everlasting possession of all possible blessedness, majesty, and glory.
Verse 21
[21] Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion — That is, God hath invested him with uncontrollable authority over all demons in hell, all angels in heaven, and all the princes and potentates on earth.
And every name that is named — We know the king is above all, though we cannot name all the officers of his court. So we know that Christ is above all, though we are not able to name all his subjects.
Not only in this world, but also in that which is to come — The world to come is so styled, not because it does not yet exist, but because it is not yet visible. Principalities and powers are named now; but those also who are not even named in this world, but shall be revealed in the world to come, are all subject to Christ.
Verse 22
[22] And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
And he hath given him to be head over all things to the church — An head both of guidance and government, and likewise of life and influence, to the whole and every member of it. All these stand in the nearest union with him, and have as continual and effectual a communication of activity, growth, and strength from him, as the natural body from its head.
Verse 23
[23] Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
The fulness of him that filleth all in all — It is hard to say in what sense this can be spoken of the church; but the sense is easy and natural, if we refer it to Christ, who is the fulness of the Father.

And, gave to them an inheritance

Last Sunday as the presentation began about our annual Stewardship Campaign, we viewed a family film show including Linsey and her family, including Mattie and Brooke Miller. Then, Linsey Miller spoke about giving generously as have several generation before us. It made me think of the many who have served our church for over one hundred years and their faith in planning, giving and making it what it is today. Now, we are asked to do that much and more for our fellow worshipers who will use these facilities and more as they search for ways to follow Jesus and his teachings. Join us today as we help our financial committee plan next year's budget and programs.

Now that Thanksgiving is past us, we look forward to Christmas and the celebration of the birth of Jesus, which changed the world for you and me and, hopefully will bring peace to us all. Don't miss these Advent season worship services for they can be the most meaningful of all.
If you are over-heated in the sanctuary, then come on down front and sit. It's a bit lower in elevation and could be a bit cooler than the rear of our sanctuary. Also, if you need a quick exit, the door on the left opens right onto Torrance Blvd, no stairs, and just one block from the cool Pacific Ocean.
Last week I saw Pastor Molly's husband sitting with a couple and said, if it's Thanksgiving week, these people must be relatives. Matt introduced me to his brother and wife (and two children) who live in Downey, a few miles East of here. Actually, there were several families with relatives gathered here for the beginning of Thanksgiving week. Welcome to you all. Come again.

Stewardship for 2018
This fall, join us in telling stories about generosity in our lives. We invite you to reflect on these questions:
- Who taught you to be generous?
- Why is it important to be generous as a Christian?
- What are some of the church ministries you are glad to be able to support?
Celebrating 25 Years of Shared Bread
Last Sunday afternoon's celebration of 25 years in service to the community through Shared Bread was a beautiful gathering. Thank you to everyone who make the party happen (especially Nina Dooley, Caroline Dawes and our BeachFaith Youth). Even more, thank you to everyone who has helped continue the ministry of Shared Bread, as we welcome hungry people here at church every Wednesday night, offering food and compassion.
At the reception, we added details onto a giant timeline of our 25 years--stop by the Hall on Sunday and see a glimpse of some of the incredible ways God has been at work through this ministry.

Old 100th is one of the most familiar hymn tunes in the hymnbook. It was first published in the collection Pseaumes Octante Trois de David (1551) and is usually attributed to French composer Louis Bourgeois (1510-1560). It was first associated with the words from Psalm 134 - “You faithful servants of the Lord”, but got its name - Old 100th - from a later association with Psalm 100 - “All people that on Earth do dwell”. The text we sing today was written in 1674 by Thomas Ken, who was a clergyman in the Church of England. It was originally the final verse of a longer hymn entitled Awake, My Soul, and With the Sun, though today it is most commonly sung by itself as a doxology.

Mark Hayes is a composer/arranger/pianist based in Kansas City whose music is renowned around the world. He got his degree in piano performance at Baylor University, moved to Kansas City to work as a music editor for Tempo Publishing, and now spends his time writing music for the church and traveling around the world as a clinician and guest conductor. When I met Mark in the late 80's, I was struck by his pianistic skills – more specifically, the way he manhandled the piano into submission to produce the most wondrous sounds. Mark's writing is superbly crafted, with influences of black gospel and jazz. He's one of my favorite contemporary writers, and when I arrived at FUMCRB, outgoing choir director Linda told me "You'll like it here – we have a lot of Mark Hayes in the library." If you play piano and want some music that will both challenge you and satisfy your appetite for delicious piano music, pick up a book of Mark Hayes piano improvisations. You'll love it. The anthem this week is a Mark Hayes setting of Psalm 136 – His Love Endures Forever – which has a decidedly Caribbean flavor, and gives the congregation a chance to participate.
Lauren Daigle is a singer/songwriter from Lafayette, Louisiana, where she grew up surrounded by the musical influences of Cajun, Zydeco and Blues. Her first solo album, How Can It Be, was released in April of 2015 and ultimately went gold. In 2015, the GMA (Gospel Music Awards) awarded her the title of New Artist of the Year, and her single How Can It Bewas awarded Song of the Year. The following year, she won the GMA Dove Awards for Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, and Best Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year, with her single Trust in You. Her song First was also nominated for a Dove Award for Song of the Year in 2016, and won the title of Song of the Year from the K-Love Fan Awards. If you saw the movie Blade Runner 2049, you would have heard her song Almost Human.
This week we're introducing yet another new tune to our sing along repertoire, this time from the Sidewalk Prophets, called Impossible. It's a great chance to unleash our wonderful drummer, Ed. Impossible was released in 2015 on the album Something Different.
In Advent, watch for some of the most gloriously beautiful music you've ever heard from the choir. The modern classic Ave Maria by Franz Biebl, the Candlelight Carol by John Rutter and an Argentinian Christmas song arranged by local composer Ariel Quintana are all on the bill, as well as a reprise of last year's spiritually uplifting The Christmas Story According to St. Luke, where the choir tells the story of Christmas using a combination of familiar carols, with narration by Pastor Molly.

Psalm 136:1 Give thanks to Adonai, for he is good,
for his grace continues forever.
2 Give thanks to the God of gods,
for his grace continues forever.
3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
for his grace continues forever;
4 to him who alone has done great wonders,
for his grace continues forever;
5 to him who skillfully made the heavens,
for his grace continues forever;
6 to him who spread out the earth on the water,
for his grace continues forever;
7 to him who made the great lights,
for his grace continues forever;
8 the sun to rule the day,
for his grace continues forever;
9 the moon and stars to rule the night,
for his grace continues forever;
10 to him who struck down Egypt’s firstborn,
for his grace continues forever;
11 and brought Isra’el out from among them,
for his grace continues forever;
12 with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm,
for his grace continues forever;
13 to him who split apart the Sea of Suf,
for his grace continues forever;
14 and made Isra’el cross right through it,
for his grace continues forever;
15 but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Sea of Suf,
for his grace continues forever;
16 to him who led his people through the desert,
for his grace continues forever;
17 to him who struck down great kings,
for his grace continues forever;
18 yes, he slaughtered powerful kings,
for his grace continues forever;
19 Sichon king of the Emori,
for his grace continues forever;
20 and ‘Og king of Bashan,
for his grace continues forever;
21 then he gave their land as a heritage,
for his grace continues forever;
22 to be possessed by Isra’el his servant,
for his grace continues forever;
23 who remembers us whenever we are brought low,
for his grace continues forever;
24 and rescues us from our enemies,
for his grace continues forever;
25 who provides food for every living creature,
for his grace continues forever.
26 Give thanks to the God of heaven,
for his grace continues forever.
