Nicaragua Central District donates food to communities in need
The Nicaragua Central District donated supplies to more than 125 families in Ventarron and Monte Fresco, Nicaragua, who are experiencing food shortages. District Superintendent Maria Antonia Ponce and other volunteers delivered the food and clothing 20 June.
Blockades caused by protests through the country are preventing deliveries to various communities in the country, leading to the current food shortages.
During the delivery, the truck they were using broke down, but Ponce said they were able to find another truck driver who was willing to take the team to their destination.
“The delivery was a great display of teamwork [in which] people participated in many different ways," Ponce said. "Some donated food, others divided the donations into packages, and others delivered the donations. We want to express our deep gratitude to all of the churches who organized and held food drives, and we are grateful for our regional Nazarene Compassionate Ministries for their friendship and help in these difficult times for us all.”
Though Nicaragua is experiencing difficult social and economic situations, Ponce and the rest of the district continue reaching out to their communities.
"Seeing the joy in the children and the love of the parents makes it all worth it," Ponce said.
Continued prayer is requested for Nicaragua. (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica)

The red stripe of the flag of eSwatini is edged in yellow color. On the center of the red stripe, there is a horizontally placed large black and white shield covering two spears and a staff decorated with feather tassels. The blue color of the eSwatini flag stands for peace. The tassel is symbolic to the monarchy. Yellow represents mineral wealth of the country; whereas the red color symbolizes battle.
Flags of the Nations: eSwatiniSince September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: eSwatini
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered eSwatini (formerly known as Swaziland) in 1910.
eSwatini had a population of 1,467,152 in 2016. That same year, eSwatini reported 163 Churches of the Nazarene, 142 of which had been officially organized. eSwatini has 16,537 total members.
Located on the Africa Region, eSwatini has four Phase 3 districts. For more information about the Africa Region, visit africanazarene.org.
Swaziland became eSwatini in April 2018.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole. The Global Ministry Center is the mission and service hub of the Church of the Nazarene..

Levittown, Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico church members participate in disaster response workshopNazarene Compassionate Ministries and Nazarene Missions International provided a disaster response workshop for 48 participants at the Abundant Life Church of the Nazarene of Levittown in the Eastern District of Puerto Rico on 23 June.
Named the Disaster Preparedness and Recovery Workshop, the event focused on enabling local laity and clergy to respond to the ever-present threat of natural disasters in Puerto Rico. The local ACUDE ministry (Alliance of United Faith Communities of Emergency) made the workshop possible by providing the training for the participants.
José Rodríguez, NCM coordinator for the Eastern District, emphasizes how important this workshop is for Puerto Rico.
"For our district, this is just the beginning of a great mission and responsibility to develop as a church an immediate response to any natural event that threatens or may affect the families in the communities," Rodríguez said.
On average, Puerto Rico experiences a tropical storm only once every five years, making it a less frequent target than other tropical countries, but in light of the recent hurricane that devastated the island, local church members can never be too prepared to respond in tragic times. (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica)

Rivadavia, Argentina
Argentina NMI holds lay leader training day
The Nazarene Missions International District Council in Argentina's Cuyo District held a lay leader training day at Belen Church of the Nazarene in Rivadavia, Argentina, 5 May. The event's theme was "Forming Leaders After God's Own Heart" and was organized by District NMI President Maria Geroli.
The event featured workshops about Maximum Mission initiatives, leading seminars, and preaching. Throughout the day, leaders shared previous missions testimonies and information on future missions offerings in the area.
Training centered around the Discípulos en Ministerio (Disciples in Ministry) resources, a series of modules developed by the South America Region to train lay people how to engage in the different ministries in their local congregation.
The council also shared the Cuyo District NMI accomplishment reports, which highlighted past service projects including Impact of Love—an event where they collected non-perishable food items for children’s food programs—and several fundraising events organized to purchase materials to repair the roof of a local church building.
Mabel Fernandez, pastor of Plumerillo Church of the Nazarene in Mendoza, Argentina, concluded the event with a sermon and encouraged the group to make Christlike disciples in their region using the tools they learned throughout the day. (Church of the Nazarene South America)

Mount Vernon, Ohio
Stetler appointed VP, dean at MVNUMount Vernon Nazarene University President Henry W. Spaulding II announced the appointment of Eric Stetler to the position of vice president for Graduate and Professional Studies and dean of the School of Graduate and Professional Studies as of 1 July.
“I am confident that Rev. Eric Stetler will provide informed, disciplined, and visionary leadership for the Graduate and Professional Studies program," Spaulding said. "He understands the importance of GPS for the future of MVNU.”
Serving MVNU since 2010, Stetler’s tenure in the school of GPS began in 2014. He has since provided oversight in marketing, enrollment, and student services. He currently serves as assistant professor of marketing.
“I am honored to serve in leadership of the School of Graduate and Professional Studies," Stetler said. "MVNU has a rich history of serving adult students and I believe GPS has great strengths. It will be a privilege to lead a talented team in GPS to develop new opportunities for growth. There is good work to do that represents an important part of MVNU’s mission.”
A graduate of what is now MVNU, Stetler returned to campus in 2010 as the assistant director of Undergraduate Admissions for Campus Visits and Events (2010-2014). Since that time, he also served as director of admissions for GPS (2014-2016), director of Student Services for GPS (2016-2018), and assistant professor of marketing (2017-2018). While at MVNU, Stetler has served on numerous committees and led campus-wide initiatives in recruitment, admissions, and retention. Stetler has also served on the President’s Advisory Committee since 2016.
Stetler graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from Mount Vernon Nazarene College in 1999 in Christian education and later returned to complete a Master of Business Administration degree in 2014. He is currently earning his doctorate of business administration from Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana. Eric is married to Kerri, who works as a librarian at Wiggin Street Elementary School in Gambier, Ohio. Together they have four children, Riley (16), Trey (14), Evan (12), and Cora (8). The Stetlers have served in various ministry roles at Nazarene churches in Bowling Green, Gahanna, and Columbus, Ohio.
“MVNU has been an important part of my professional and personal life," Stetler said. "As a young undergraduate student I received a vocational foundation for life, and I met my wife, Kerri (Pressley ’99). As a graduate student, my views and values were again challenged and shaped through faculty and administration who truly believed in Christian higher education. I am excited to serve the students, faculty, and administration at MVNU as we seek to further an education that is distinctively Christian.” (Mount Vernon Nazarene University)
