Trinity United Methodist Church of Gainesville, Florida, United States for Tuesday, 30 December 2014 "Mother Susanna Wesley"
I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you." (2 Timothy 1:5).
While Paul wrote the above words to Timothy about his mother and grandmother, they certainly apply to John's Mother, Susanna. She is the one who began the regiment or "method" of orderly learning for her children that would later become the name of her son's followers: Methodists (more about that later).
At the age of 73 as Susanna lay in bed approaching death, John noted in his journal of July 30, 1742: "I found my mother on the borders of eternity. But she had no doubt or fear nor any desire but (as soon as God should call) 'to depart and be with Christ.'" Her last request of her children was, "Children, as soon as I am released, sing a psalm of praise to God." She died a day later.
If there had been no Susanna, there would have been no Methodist movement. May we all aspire to be godly parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, that the world, starting with those closest to us, know the God who loves them everlastingly!
