Good Morning, Ministry Partner:
Be Encouraged by God's Word:
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, "I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will make you exceedingly numerous." Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, "As for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. And I will give to you, and to your offspring after you, the land where you are now an alien, all the land of Canaan, for a perpetual holding; and I will be their God."[Genesis 17:1-8, NRSV]
Wisdom from Fellow Pilgrims:
What would it take for us to make a covenant with God? What would it mean for us to commit ourselves to his plan for our lives in 2015? First, it would mean the forgiveness of our sins and the constant realization of our continual need of the grace of God in our lives. Second, it would mean a resolve in our own lives to live as disciples of our Lord, forgoing our own selfish motivations and living in our world as servant to others in the name of God. Finally, it would mean not trusting in our own strength and abilities, but anchoring in the source of our strength and abilities . . . God himself.[Wesley Covenant Service, Jeren Rowell paraphrase]
Pray Together with Us:
O holy and merciful God, our heavenly Father, who has taught us that upon our present choice depends our eternal lot; Accept, we ask you, the worship of your penitent servants, and grant that with humble confession and holy vow we may renew our express and solemn covenant with you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen[19th century Methodist covenant service]
