Dear Resurrection Family,
I hope you are doing well today! We've had a terrific week here at Resurrection and I'm looking forward to a great weekend. One reminder up front - Sunday night is the Super Bowl and our Sunday night service at Leawood, Resurrection West, and Resurrection Downtown will be held an hour early, from 4 to 5 pm, to allow Sunday night worshipers to make it to their Super Bowl festivities.
This weekend in worship I'll conclude our series of sermons on Half-Truths - the clichés Christians often say but which don't actually line up with Scripture. This week we'll consider the half-truth "Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin." This phrase is often used by Christians who think they are showing love and grace, but we'll look at what's behind the statement and consider what might be a better truth. Invite a friend to join you for worship this weekend, this is a message that we all need to hear.
Don't forget, this is our annual Souper Bowl Food Drive weekend. If you picked up a sack last weekend, remember to fill it and turn it in this weekend. If you'd like to help fight hunger in our community, you can also go to our website to see a list of needed items that you can purchase. Here's the link. Another way to provide food to combat hunger is to make a monetary donation and our missions' team will shop for you. Join LaVon and me and thousands of your fellow members and visitors in this effort. We hope to receive 40 tons of food to distribute to area pantries in this, our first food drive of 2015.
As noted above, we'll also hold our Sunday night service from 4 to 5. Some have asked me in the past if we're changing the worship time because football is more important than God. My response is no, but reaching non and nominally religious people is more important than the time and length of our worship service. If you regularly worship at 5 pm on Sunday, join us at 4 pm before you head to your Super Bowl gatherings.
Last Sunday, we had 374 new members join Church of the Resurrection at Coffee with the Pastors - 284 in Leawood, 43 at West, 15 at Blue Springs and 32 at Downtown. Their names are listed at the end of the email. Please take a minute to read through the names - there may be a friend, neighbor or co-worker listed. Reach out and welcome them to our church.
Thanks to all of you who gave blood on Monday and Tuesday of this week at the Leawood campus. We had 608 people donate 591 pints of blood. Thanks not only to those who donated, but to everyone who volunteered as well. If you weren't able to donate this time, mark your calendars for our other blood drives this year: May 18-19; Aug. 31-Sept. 1; and Nov. 16-17.
This weekend we'll give away a small gift to those who attended worship at Resurrection, either in person or online, 90% of the time or more last year. Stop by the Connection Point before or after worship if you are at the Leawood campus (campus pastors will announce where to pick them up at the campuses). The gift is a stainless steel insulated coffee tumbler.
Our reason for lifting up worship attendance and recognizing those who've been here most weekends is to raise this as a value for us as a congregation. When we join the church, we commit to attend worship every week - in person or online. My hope is to encourage everyone to strive to follow the example of these people. So far, thousands of you have perfect attendance for the year. In a time when frequency of worship attendance is falling across the US, we're encouraging you to make being in worship, either in person or online, a priority in your faith and life.
One more thing, I want to share is that over the next few weeks, you may see some exciting changes on the Leawood campus. Our contractors will begin putting up construction fencing and moving equipment onto the site in anticipation of our groundbreaking. This is a very exciting time in the life of our church as we reveal the stained glass window design on February 21-22 and then break ground on our new sanctuary on February 28-March 1. These will be historic events that you'll share with your children and grandchildren, and you'll want to make sure you are in worship these weekends!
Finally, on Monday I leave for Africa along with Casey Stapp, our director of international missions, and Lee Rudeen, our chief videographer. The first week I'm going to visit the projects you've supported the last few years in Malawi where I'll meet with your brothers and sisters in Christ and those leaders of the church. We'll also look ahead at how we might continue to partner in the years ahead in changing lives, transforming communities and raising up churches in Malawi. The weekend of February 7/8, I'll preach from Malawi back to Resurrection and sharing with you the projects and people we're ministry with in Malawi. The next week I'll be in Zimbabwe at Africa University where I will lecture, then be a part of a seminar on ministry in Africa, and in meetings with United Methodist leaders across Africa. The weekend of the 14/15 I'll take you to Zimbabwe and share the message from there! Please keep us in your prayers the next couple of weeks.
But before leaving for Africa on Monday, I look forward to seeing you in worship this weekend!
Adam
