Sunday's Sermon & Scripture:
"It's Not About Me"
Romans 8:12-17
Romans 8:2 So then, brothers, we don’t owe a thing to our old nature that would require us to live according to our old nature. 13 For if you live according to your old nature, you will certainly die; but if, by the Spirit, you keep putting to death the practices of the body, you will live.

14 All who are led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to bring you back again into fear; on the contrary, you received the Spirit, who makes us sons and by whose power we cry out, “Abba!” (that is, “Dear Father!”). 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our own spirits that we are children of God; 17 and if we are children, then we are also heirs, heirs of God and joint-heirs with the Messiah — provided we are suffering with him in order also to be glorified with him.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for: Romans 8:12-17
Verse 12

[12] Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
We are not debtors to the flesh — We ought not to follow it.
Verse 13
[13] For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
The deeds of the flesh — Not only evil actions, but evil desires, tempers, thoughts.
If ye mortify — Kill, destroy these.
Ye shall live — The life of faith more abundantly here, and hereafter the life of glory.
Verse 14
[14] For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God — In all the ways of righteousness.
They are the sons of God — Here St. Paul enters upon the description of those blessings which he comprises, Romans 8:30, in the word glorified; though, indeed, he does not describe mere glory, but that which is still mingled with the cross. The sum is, through sufferings to glory.
Verse 15
[15] For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
For ye — Who are real Christians.
Have not received the spirit of bondage — The Holy Ghost was not properly a spirit of bondage, even in the time of the Old Testament. Yet there was something of bondage remaining even in those who then had received the Spirit.
Again — As the Jews did before.
We — All and every believer.
Cry — The word denotes a vehement speaking, with desire, confidence, constancy.
Abba, Father — The latter word explains the former. By using both the Syriac and the Greek word, St. Paul seems to point out the joint cry both of the Jewish and gentile believers. The spirit of bondage here seems directly to mean, those operations of the Holy Spirit by which the soul, on its first conviction, feels itself in bondage to sin, to the world, to Satan, and obnoxious to the wrath of God. This, therefore, and the Spirit of adoption, are one and the same Spirit, only manifesting itself in various operations, according to the various circumstances of the persons.
Verse 16
[16] The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
The same Spirit beareth witness with our spirit — With the spirit of every true believer, by a testimony distinct from that of his own spirit, or the testimony of a good conscience. Happy they who enjoy this clear and constant.
Verse 17
[17] And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Joint heirs — That we may know it is a great inheritance which God will give us for he hath given a great one to his Son.
If we suffer with him — Willingly and cheerfully, for righteousness' sake. This is a new proposition, referring to what follows.
Verse 18
[18] For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
For I reckon — This verse gives the reason why he but now mentioned sufferings and glory. When that glory "shall be revealed in us," then the sons of God will be revealed also.
Verse 19
[19] For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
For the earnest expectation — The word denotes a lively hope of something drawing near, and a vehement longing after it.
Of the creation — Of all visible creatures, believers excepted, who are spoken of apart; each kind, according as it is capable. All these have been sufferers through sin; and to all these (the finally impenitent excepted) shall refreshment redound from the glory of the children of God. Upright heathens are by no means to be excluded from this earnest expectation: nay, perhaps something of it may at some times be found even in the vainest of men; who (although in the hurry of life they mistake vanity for liberty, and partly stifle. partly dissemble, their groans, yet) in their sober, quiet, sleepless, afflicted hours, pour forth many sighs in the ear of God.

Sermon Story "It's About Others" by Gary Lee Parker with Scripture: Romans 8:2 So then, brothers, we don’t owe a thing to our old nature that would require us to live according to our old nature.

What is God through the Apostle Paul attempting to tell the Messianic Community in Rome and us in the 21st century? There is much we possibly can gleam from this text whether it is about forgetting the old self that was crucified with Jesus and baptized into God's Holiness by His Holy Spirit. First, there is the fact that we did not save ourselves. Second, we were not made Holy by what we have done. Lastly, we realize it is all about God and service to Him and other people in the Messianic Community as well as the community we live in who are seeking God for themselves. This holiness is God's love that we are to pass on to other people that they may see and know how God loves them. We seek ways to be Jesus' witness by being in His Holiness and His Love in everything we are and do in this life as Children of God as we live as heirs of God. How do we really understand this concept of Jesus for every area of our lives? How do we show the people we come in contact with that we are not only beloved of God and His children, but they are beloved of God? Will we seek to be conveyers of God's Pure Love and Holiness in our lives? We come to receive more of God's Grace, Pure Love, and Holiness as we come and eat the Body of Jesus and Drink His blood in our participation and remembering through the Holy Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist singing and listening to the Hymn/Song "Watered Down Love" by Bob Dylan:
1. Love that’s pure hopes all things
Believes all things, won’t pull no strings
Won’t sneak up into your room, tall, dark and handsome
Capture your heart and hold it for ransom
Chorus:
You don’t want a love that’s pure
You wanna drown love
You want a watered-down love
2. Love that’s pure, it don’t make no false claims
Intercedes for you ’stead of casting you blame
Will not deceive you or lead you into transgression
Won’t write it up and make you sign a false confession
Chorus:
You don’t want a love that’s pure
You wanna drown love
You want a watered-down love
3. Love that’s pure won’t lead you astray
Won’t hold you back, won’t mess up your day
Won’t pervert you, corrupt you with stupid wishes
It don’t make you envious, it don’t make you suspicious
Chorus:
You don’t want a love that’s pure
You wanna drown love
You want a watered-down love
4. Love that’s pure ain’t no accident
Always on time, is always content
An eternal flame, quietly burning
Never needs to be proud, restlessly yearning
Chorus:
You don’t want a love that’s pure
You wanna drown love
You want a watered-down love

READERS FOR SUNDAY WORSHIP & Morning Snack Hosts
We are always looking for people who want to be a part of Sunday morning worship & fellowship. If you would like to be liturgist at either the 8:30 or10:30 service (or both) just click the following link. On the same page, you may sign up to host morning snacks, too. It's a wonderful way to serve. You will receive email confirmation of the date and the office will email all the reading a couple days before.
Religious Affiliation
You may have seen headlines or editorials about the recently-released Religious Landscape Study from the Pew Research Center. It reveals how a smaller percentage of people identify as Christian; an increasing number of people cite that they have no religious affiliation. This trend is even more pronounced in the Los Angeles area.
It's tempting, in the face of the news that we're "losing ground" in terms of our status as the religion of the majority, to feel discouraged. I invite you to also be empowered and challenged to lives of faith that claim the love of God--not because it's easy or popular, but because it's life-changing. And to live a faith that proclaims grace--not because it's easy or convenient, but because it changes the world.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
This Sunday, I hope you'll join us for two special things: First, that you'll come early for the 10:30 service so you can join our band in singing worship songs as we say farewell to Trey and Tami in their roles in the band. Second, I hope you'll join us for our all-church picnic in the afternoon, at El Nido Park. I even encourage you to wear your casual picnic clothes to church!

a view from the pew from a longtime member of our church
"Every once in awhile Pastor Molly uses a phase or words that are perfect for her point and cause me to remember them or it. Last Sunday during her sermon on Pentecost Sunday she commented on our congregation's diversity by using the line, "Our Church has a diversified congregation in different stages and ages." I, now being one of the older persons can remember our church people being that way all the time, or at least during my time between 1950 and 2015. My former Los Angeles Methodist Church was the same, but I never heard the stages and ages words being used together before. Thanks, Molly, for another unique phrase.

"Diversified..." by Bob Peterson
Every once in awhile Pastor Molly uses a phase or words that are perfect for her point and cause me to remember them or it. Last Sunday during her sermon on Pentecost Sunday she commented on our congregation's diversity by using the line, “Our Church has a diversified congregation in different stages and ages.” I, now being one of the older persons can remember our church people being that way all the time, or at least during my time between 1950 and 2015. My former Los Angeles Methodist Church was the same, but I never heard the stages and ages words being used together before. Thanks, Molly, for another unique phrase.
This Sunday, May 31st our church annual picnic is being held at El Nido Park just across the railroad tracks diagonally from, Pacific Crest Cemetery where I worked for 22 years, East of Inglewood Avenue at 182nd Street. We've been there many times over the years, and I must admit it is not so much fun as it used to be when I was younger. However, I wouldn't miss it for the world for two reasons. First, the children and families have such a great time its always fun to attend, and secondly our youth are raising funds for summer missions and they need our support. So, I'll see you there.
We are losing another musician who has been with us for at least fifteen years. Trey Kyle has been our Praise Band Leader for most of that time and I have always admired his great talent and his skill in leading and inspiring that group of musicians. Most of you know I am a classical musician and so the contemporary music they play is not my favorite, but they do it so well it's a joy to hear. Trey's leadership shows every time they play and he keeps them performing as a tight unit that knows what it is doing. Trey needs to be thanked for his years of work with us and he should know that we love his work and his dedication.

A Worship Survey
As we reach the 1-year anniversary of our blended 10:30 worship service, our Worship and Music Committee wants to know more about your worship experiences.
Next Sunday, June 7, during 10:30 worship we will invite you to take a moment to answer these reflective questions. In hopes that you might start thinking about them sooner, here are the questions:
During the past year, what have you found meaningful and helpful during worship?
During the past year, what musical highlights and/or presentations do you recall as having an impact on your Sunday worship?
Has anything gotten in the way of your experiencing a meaningful worship? If so, please explain.
Do you invite others to worship with us? Why or why not? (If so, what do you highlight in your invitation?)
What do you take with you from Sunday worship for the following week?
Download and print the survey here, or fill it out in worship June 7.

To All Men of the church,
During the January 31st Check into Church planning meeting, there were a number of men that said they would be interested in a Men's Ministry group. A number of us have met one Sunday between services, then we have met twice on Monday evenings. The last meeting was Tuesday evening and we had a discussion on being "rich". We watched a video, then had a discussion on what this means to each of us with our Christian lives using scripture from 1 Timothy 6:17-19.
Our next topic will involve the Bible, led by Don Pearson. Don has provided a study guide and an outline for the discussion.
We have established the 3rd Monday as the normal meeting date, but the next meeting will be held on June 15th at 7:00 PM. We want to invite all men to this meeting. Please respond to the Realm Email to register for the group. We would like to build a group listing of all that are interested.
Regards,
Chad Ahrens, Gary Baughman, Paul Caldwell, Carl Harrison, John Kirk, Don Pearson, Darrell Uran & Joe Zeiler
