May's theme: A month to remember
Instead of Second Sunday Social
Getting Erin on the move
WELCOME TO MAY
I've got 3 dogs, so I'll keep this short.
Good news from my son in Bora Bora, celebrating graduation from his master's program. He survived swimming with the sharks yesterday.
Says he got some good video footage with his Go-Pro camera. Those are the tiny cameras made to strap on and wear anywhere, including underwater.
Maybe he'll let me piece together a video segment for YouTube.
And maybe not.

A month to remember

SUNDAY5.3. Jim Buffington
My favorite human acquaintance.
The story of the friendship between Jonathan and David or Paul and Timothy. The session leader and class members reflect on someone dear to them (other than a spouse; the spouse goes without saying is the favorite, or better be).
2 Timothy 1:3-5; 4:6-9
2 Timothy 1:3 I give thanks to God, whom, like my forbears, I worship with a clean conscience, as I regularly remember you in my prayers night and day. 4 I am reminded of your tears, and I long to see you, so that I might be filled with joy. 5 I recall your sincere trust, the same trust that your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice had first; and I am convinced that you too now have this trust.
2 Timothy 4:6 For as for me, I am already being poured out on the altar; yes, the time for my departure has arrived. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 All that awaits me now is the crown of righteousness which the Lord, “the Righteous Judge,” will award to me on that Day — and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for him to appear.
9 Do your best to come to me soon.
UPCOMING5.10 Mother's Day. Steve MillerA mother I respect.
The story of how Jochebed saved her baby Moses, or how Rachel protected Jacob (though “respect” is a stretch there). Talk about the traits we love to see in a mom.
Exodus 2:1-10; Proverbs 31:25-30
Exodus 2:1 A man from the family of Levi took a woman also descended from Levi as his wife. 2 When she conceived and had a son, upon seeing what a fine child he was, she hid him for three months. 3 When she could no longer hide him, she took a papyrus basket, coated it with clay and tar, put the child in it and placed it among the reeds on the riverbank. 4 His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.
5 The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe in the river while her maids-in-attendance walked along the riverside. Spotting the basket among the reeds, she sent her slave-girl to get it. 6 She opened it and looked inside, and there in front of her was a crying baby boy! Moved with pity, she said, “This must be one of the Hebrews’ children.” 7 At this point, his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Would you like me to go and find you one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” 8 Pharaoh’s daughter answered, “Yes, go.” So the girl went and called the baby’s own mother. 9 Pharaoh’s daughter told her, “Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will pay you for doing it.” So the woman took the child and nursed it. 10 Then, when the child had grown some, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter; and she began to raise him as her son. She called him Moshe [pull out], explaining, “Because I pulled him out of the water.”
Proverbs 31:25 Clothed with strength and dignity,
she can laugh at the days to come.
פ 26 When she opens her mouth, she speaks wisely;
on her tongue is loving instruction.
צ 27 She watches how things go in her house,
not eating the bread of idleness.
ק 28 Her children arise; they make her happy;
her husband too, as he praises her:
ר 29 “Many women have done wonderful things,
but you surpass them all!”
ש 30 Charm can lie, beauty can vanish,
but a woman who fears Adonai should be praised.

5.17. Keith LarkinKids I know and love.
With school graduations going on, we talk about the kids in our life. We start with the story of the disciples trying to drive children away from Jesus. We talk about what a bachelor like Jesus might have seen in the kids. And we talk about what endears kids to us and why we have an irrational love for them no matter what.
Psalm 127:3-5Psalm 127:3 Children too are a gift from Adonai;
the fruit of the womb is a reward.
4 The children born when one is young.
are like arrows in the hand of a warrior.
5 How blessed is the man
who has filled his quiver with them;
he will not have to be embarrassed
when contending with foes at the city gate.
5.25 Memorial Day Weekend. Terry BahadurDead but not forgotten.
Start with the Bible passage of Paul, “We want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope” (1 Thess4:13). We talk about some of the people we know who have died and what they mean to us, and about our hope of a reunion.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
1 Thessalonians 4:13 Now, brothers, we want you to know the truth about those who have died; otherwise, you might become sad the way other people 14 do who have nothing to hope for. For since we believe that Yeshua died and rose again, we also believe that in the same way God, through Yeshua, will take with him those who have died. 15 When we say this, we base it on the Lord’s own word: we who remain alive when the Lord comes will certainly not take precedence over those who have died. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a rousing cry, with a call from one of the ruling angels, and with God’s shofar; those who died united with the Messiah will be the first to rise; 17 then we who are left still alive will be caught up with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and thus we will always be with the Lord. 18 So encourage each other with these words.
Instead of Second Sunday Social
Second Sunday Social is cancelled this week because it's Mother's Day and because the Mother in charge of Second Sunday Socials will be on a flight home from a wedding in Colorado.
That's Linda Miller.
She's leaving me home alone with 3 dogs on Mother's Day.
In fact, my entire family will be out of state on Mother's Day.
Me and - as I said - 3 dogs.
So I'm open to an invitation for lunch.
As a substitute for the Second Sunday Social, Linda is hoping we'll have enough folks to help Erin Cottrell move on Saturday, May 23, that we can enjoy a little time feeding on something in the process. Possibly a quick and easy cookout. Or maybe the traditional Moving Day Pizza. Or perhaps a Wondrous Surprise like honey-sweet Manna and fresh quail.
Getting Erin on the move
Erin Cottrell is moving from Lawrence to Olathe on Memorial Day Weekend.
I asked her what kind of horsepower she had. She said the only ones doing the heavy lifting are her, Keith, and her step-father.
Terry Bahadur and I have added Saturday, May 23 to our calendars. We're hoping for some backup.
What a beautiful day to wear a hat.
