Pastor Brian’s Faith Works Lent 2016 — a season of serious spiritual reflection.
Lent, the season between Ash Wednesday (February 10 this year) and Easter (March 27 this year) is a time for us to listen, to watch, to reflect, to respond. Lent is traditionally a time of fasting or self-denial. I personally think of it as a time of quieting the noises of life and stepping away from wasted time and energy. If there is some habitual sin in your life, and if there is something that robs you of your peace in Christ, then let it go. Don’t be satisfied with any substitute for real life and real peace. Getting rid of the things that destroy us is one important kind of fasting. Lent is a time for praying, reading the Bible, then listening to God and responding:
- Pray to get it all out. Keep current with God.
- Read the Bible. If you don’t have a regular practice, then read a chapter a day from Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. With your mind fed by the Word, be still and listen to God, whether that is for half an hour or half a minute.
- Respond with action. Probably your action will include kindness and justice. Dare to be challenged and step up to the challenge. Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? [Isaiah 58:6-7]
May God’s forgiveness and peace and actions of love fill your life.

MEMORIALS AND LIVING TRIBUTES, 2015
The following is a summary of contributions in honor and memory of members of Hope. The
Memorials and Living Tributes program provides lasting tools and equipment to further the mission of the church. Since most of these items are outside the general fund budget, this program is an excellent way to honor or memorialize loved ones while providing needed items and program support that would not be available otherwise. This report covers donations received in 2015, and programs funded by these and previous years’ donations. We thank you for your contributions. If you have any questions about the program, please contact Terry Badger, 760 489-8976.

NEW MEN’S LENTEN BIBLE STUDY
Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus Thursday Knights, a men’s small group, is inviting all Hope Men to participate in a six-week Lent
Bible study starting February 11. The video-based study (Thursdays 7 to 8:30 PM in the Covenant Hall library) addresses the book, The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus, by United Methodist pastor Adam Hamilton, which will be provided. Travel with Hamilton as he retraces the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Using historical information, archaeological data, and stories of the faith, Hamilton follows in the footsteps of Jesus from his baptism to the temptations to the heart of his ministry, including the people he loved, the parables he taught, the enemies he made, and the healing he brought. Please contact Chuck Ward @ 858-780-1813 or chuckward4@sbcglobal.net for more information. There is no cost to the
participant for this study.
MISSIONS CORNER
$40,261 — That’s how much members of Hope
donated to various outreach/missions projects in 2015. Among the major recipients were UMCOR (the United Methodist Com. on Relief) with funds for everything from earthquake victims in Nepal to disaster supplies for victims here at home; Imagine No Malaria, Hope for Injured Warriors, Russian Ministry, Interfaith Community Services, Metro Good Neighbor Center, Children of Promise
orphanage in Tijuana and the youth SSP team.
Some of your donations were matched — making
Hope’s dollars go even further. None of these
funds came from the church budget — they all
came from generous members donating to our
“special offerings,” to our fundraising events, and to good causes when they saw them. Besides this generosity, Hope members also met their 2015 commitment for apportionments, some of which goes to mission projects supported by our conference. The funds above do not include “in kind” donations — all those clothes for homeless students attending Perkins and Monarch Schools, all those new undies for kids at the Good Neighbor Center, all those bags of food for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for needy families, all those weekly donations to the food cart, all those boxes of “goodies from home” for members of the armed services, and all the volunteer hours involved.
Thank you! Thank you!
One of the good causes we support is “Hope for Injured Warriors.” We give primarily to support military members recovering from serious injuries and living at Freedom Station here in San Diego. The organization Hope supports is the “Warrior Foundation — Freedom Station”, which has an excellent rating from groups that monitor charities,
not to be confused with the Wounded Warrior
Foundation which has received some negative
publicity lately. Our special offering for February goes to Hope’s Disaster Relief Fund. A team led by Hope will be going to volunteer at the UMCOR West facility in Salt Lake City for a week in early April. The team will help assemble kits for distribution after
disasters in the US — like hurricanes and flooding — as well as internationally. Team Leader Cindy Gleason has called a meeting of the team for Sunday, Feb. 28, noon-2 PM, in Covenant Hall. A light lunch will be served. Please let Cindy know if you plan to attend.
We, Terry and Larry Sieck, are “retiring” as
co-chairmen of the Outreach/Missions Committee but will continue to serve as members and coordinate our Russian Ministry Projects. It has been very fulfilling for us to serve these last three years and we look forward to continuing to help those in need, both locally and around the world. May God continue to bless this important work done by you, the people of Hope. Our committee meets the last Monday of each month, 7 PM, Jones Center room 6. Join us! — Terry and Larry Sieck, co-chr. Outreach/Missions Committee

READY, SET, HELP by Cindy Gleason
The Hope Disaster Relief Team (HDRT) is getting ready to embark on another journey to UMCORWest in Salt Lake City the week of April 4th to assemble, pack, and ship disaster relief kits to those affected by both man-made and natural disasters.
You have a part in this trip. Every year HDRT
brings funds donated by the members of Hope
Church. Along with the money donated at
Alternative Christmas, we will be adding funds from the Monthly Givings for HDRT. Several times the team has had to stop making some kits because supplies ran out. During the week, we will be assembling enough kits to help over 5,000 people both locally and globally. HDRT volunteering at the depot helps in preparing kits to be ready whenever disaster happens, including the recent weather disasters. Each kit brings a little
relief and lots of Hope and prayers.
In addition, there are funds and volunteers for local disasters. If you have had any damage from the recent storms and need assistance, please call the church office. We are here to help.
If you would like more information regarding
HDRT or the upcoming trip in April, please join us on February 28th in Covenant Hall at noon.
We will be discussing the trip and making
decisions. A light luncheon will be served.
Please contact me at jimcyn73@hotmail.com or
619-813-1899 if you want more information or
are interested in attending the meeting.
Thank you for your continued support of Hope
Disaster Relief Team! You are part of this mission that is making a difference in people’s lives.

God’s Awesome Next Generation, affectionately known as GANG, is a fun youth group for Hope UMC’s 4th and 5th graders and their 4th & 5th grade friends. We’ll meet one Sunday per month from 4:00-5:30 in rooms J1 & J2 (the children’s S.S. classrooms). Roz & Jean Roberts lead us in fun and active games as we strengthen our friendships with each other and explore our relationship with God. Each evening wraps up with pizza, so please bring $5 if you’re
able. (Don’t stay away because of cost! Let
Carrie, Jean, or Roz know if the pizza money is a problem for your family.) If you have food allergies, please bring dinner form home. Questions? Call Carrie in the office: 858.485.5840 x103.
JOYFUL NOISE CHOIR
The Joyful Noise children’s choir, for kids
Kindergarten — 5th grade and directed by Kathy Askins, is back to rehearsing in the Sanctuary on Sundays following the late service. Rehearsals run from approximately 11:45-12:30. Come be part of the fun as we learn the fundamentals of music and choral singing so we can perform in occasional worship services.
EASTER IS AROUND THE CORNER!
Easter is early this year on March 27. That means our annual Easter Party & Egg Hunt will be on Saturday, March 26 at 3:30. This is always great fun for our children and a wonderful outreach event for your friends and family who do not attend Hope. However, in order to make this party a success we need donations of plastic eggs filled with wrapped
candy. Please bring your donations (marked
“Church Egg Hunt”) to church on weekends or to the church office during the week. Thank you in advance for your help!
