Commemorating Henri NouwenAs you may know, this month marks the 20th anniversary of Henri Nouwen's death. Henri suffered a fatal heart attack on September 21, 1996, while visiting the Netherlands en route to Russia to participate in a documentary about his book theReturn of the Prodigal Son.
Henri left behind a legacy of 39 books and countless articles, lectures, and letters, many of which we have retrieved and catalogued for the Henri J.M. Nouwen Archives & Research Collection.
While his written legacy is impressive, Henri's real impact is reflected in how his words continue to inform, instruct and inspire - perhaps more now than when he was alive.
Henri's appeal goes well beyond what one might expect from a writer of spiritual books. His insights on social justice, prayer, compassion, caregiving, church ministry, downward mobility, and what it means to live an authentic spiritual life, despite our many imperfections and wounds, resonate deeply with people of all ages and backgrounds.
Few writers have Henri's ability to speak God's love directly into our hearts.
As we prepare to commemorate his life this month, I have a request to ask of you:
Would you consider making a special gift to the Henri Nouwen Society in honor of Henri? As we celebrate this 20th anniversary your partnership can significantly sustain and empower our work in extending Henri's legacy. It is vital, transformative work that we do - but we cannot do it alone.
For gifts over $1,000 click here.
For all other gifts please click here.
I am inviting you to partner with us because we know Henri Nouwen has been an important resource in your own life.
Not only can we celebrate all that has been achieved over the past twenty years through our main pillars of publishing and the archives, we can also continue to engage, inspire and transform a new generation with Henri's spiritual message of being "beloved" of God.
As a valued member of our community, I am sure you will enjoy a brief clip from a documentary I made on Henri called Journey of the Heart. This particular interview was recorded in Henri's living room at the Cedars. I trust it will be an encouragement and a blessing to you.

In gratitude,
