My hero Rabbi Harold Kushner once wrote about his favorite Academy Award. (I'm glad the wrong name wasn't announced for it last night!)
It is not best picture. It is not best actor. It is the "best supporting actor."
"So many people," he writes, "want to be the star." They want fame, power, wealth, attention."
Yet, he writes "those roles of public stardom are scattered and few. Not everyone can be a power figure in the world."
"Once you realize that you have two choices: to be bitter about the situation, or to open your eyes and look closely at the lives of those who surround you."
"Chances are that very near you, there's someone who could benefit greatly from your compassion and skills."
"If you choose to accept the role of a supporting actor in someone else's dream and circumstances, you are living a life that matters regardless of your career, prestige or the money you boast in your bank account."
Ask yourself: can you be the best supporting actor in another person's life?
You can read more from Rabbi Kushner's wonderful book Living a Life That Matters.
