NYI Leader in PNG Injured in Attempted Car Jacking - Prayer Needed
NYI Leader in PNG Injured in Attempted Car Jacking – Prayer Needed
Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea: Prayer has been requested for an NYI Leader, Allen Haunje, as he is recovering in the hospital from wounds received from robbers in an attempted car jacking. We praise the Lord that he was taken directly to a hospital where he underwent a 5 hour surgery to repair the damage. Please pray not only for physical healing, but emotional healing as well.
Melanesia South Pacific NYI Coordinator Daniel Latu writes:
“I am calling on all youth to stand with us in praying continuously for God’s complete healing over Allan’s life, that the peace of God that surpasses all understanding would rest on Allan, his wife, children and family and forgiveness on those who wronged him. In essence we’re believing God for a setup in this setback. Genesis 50:20 – You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”

Kudjip, Papua New Guinea: The passports of missionaries Andy and Judy Bennett have been stolen along with a laptop belonging to the mission at Kudjip, Papua New Guinea. Andy says, “Occasionally thieves here have been known to contact the owner of stolen property and offer its return for a “reward.”
Pray for the Bennetts who had recently received new passports and now will have to start the entire process over. Pray also that the person who stole the passports and laptop will be impressed to return what they took and that good will come out of the incident.
So far they have not been returned and they are now in the process of obtaining new ones. Please pray that the new passports will be ready in time for their scheduled travel on March 21.from Prayer Mobilization Line

Braving Trust... B is for Boundaries

Sociologist and thought leader, Dr. Brene Brown has developed a helpful acronym in her teaching on the Anatomy of Trust:
B-R-A-V-I-N-G.
In the next few months the anatomy of trust will be discussed in further detail, starting with BOUNDARIES.
Boundaries are the lines between what's ok and what's not. Boundaries can be related to time or space, or they may be physical, emotional, behavioral, mental, etc.
So what does it have to do with trust, and what can we do about it?
Yet again, Member Care Regional Coordinator Cindy Schmelzenbach unravels the relevance of Boundaries in the context of growing trust within ministry teams!

BRAVING Trust… B is for Boundaries

Sociologist and thought leader, Dr. Brene Brown has developed a helpful acronym in her teaching on the Anatomy of Trust:
B-R-A-V-I-N-G.
I invite you to join me for the next few months as we unpack this together, especially in the context of growing trust within ministry teams.
B is for Boundaries:
I wrote about boundaries back in June of 2016 from the perspective of self-care, resilience and stress prevention. But I’d like to circle back around and look at boundaries again. This time, as a component of trust.
What is it?
Boundaries are the lines between what’s ok and what’s not. Boundaries can be related to time or space, or they may be physical, emotional, behavioral, mental, etc.
What does it have to do with trust?
Dr. Brene Brown, says that boundaries are a vital component of trust because in a trusting relationship, I know where your boundaries are… and I respect them. You know where my boundaries are… and you respect them. This cultivates trust. Sounds obvious, right?
So what gets in the way?
If I’m feeling insecure in my ability to meet an expectation at work, I may be tempted to protect or improve my image with you as my co-worker or supervisor by saying I’m able to do something that I’m not, or agreeing to something that’s beyond my capacity or ability to do…over and over again. This leads to frustration, resentment and disappointment. So, it’s my responsibility to make sure I understand the expectations, compare them with my capacity, and make my boundaries known within those expectations. When I do that, it builds trust between you and me because I’ve been clear about what you can expect from me.
Maybe I’m your supervisor and I’m experiencing pressure from my supervisor to have something completed by my team, so I pressure you to work late or beyond what you’ve understood would be expected. You might do it, but if this becomes the culture of our working relationship, I compromise the trust between us by disrespecting your boundaries. As your supervisor, it’s my responsibility to protect your boundaries and not ask you to compromise them. That builds trust because you know I see you as a person, not just for what you can produce.
What can we do about it?
Let’s explore some Myths and Truths about Boundaries.
Boundary Myth #1: Boundaries are selfish.
Maybe we’ve been raised to believe we should always say yes when ‘ministry’ is asked of us. We may even believe this is our calling. The problem is that this puts the responsibility of discernment on everyone except us. Harmon reflected the other day, “Setting boundaries is not a ‘my-way-or-the-highway’ approach. Instead, when I set healthy boundaries and tell you about them, I’m letting you know that I desire to serve in a way that will be by far the most benefit to you and those I desire to serve.”
Boundary Truth #1: Boundaries protect me from being selfish!
What would it look like to prayerfully allow God to guide me in setting boundaries that protect the calling he has placed on my life?
What relationships will benefit from this?
Where will trust increase?
Boundary Myth #2: My Life is too unpredictable for boundaries.
Often it feels like ministry is an ‘on-demand’ service-oriented business; we can’t schedule ministry needs, so we give up on setting boundaries. But maybe there is much more within our reach to influence regarding our daily life than we realize. My ability to show up in a healthy way in those unpredictable but immensely important ministry moments actually depends on my ability to have boundaries in place everywhere I can.
Boundary Truth #2: My life is too unpredictable NOT to have boundaries!
How might I organize my time and space within boundaries so there are margins for the unpredictable?
How much of my life is more ‘boundary-able’ than I realize?
How might better stewardship of my time and space build trust in my relationships with my team members, or supervisors?
Boundary Myth #3: Boundaries will reduce results.
This comes from the old-school assumption that the only way to get great results is through top down or peer to peer pressure to perform. It’s almost like we are afraid our co-workers or team members won’t be motivated to do their best if we protect their boundaries. So we give lip service to holistic health, but might be in danger of sending subtle messages that, over time, consistently communicate, “you’re not enough”. This breaks down trust. Boundaries are not about the exceptional unusual circumstance when we are asked to go beyond what is normal in order to meet an unpredicted demand, but when unhealthy expectations begin to become the very culture of the work environment, we begin to break down in our ability to be what we were created to be. We lose motivation and eventually, we withhold trust from one another.
Boundary Truth #3: Boundaries will cultivate Trust; and Trust produces authentic results!
Do I trust my team members to be motivated enough to do their best without pressure from me?
As a supervisor, if my emails and communications were examined, how might the message, ‘You’re not enough’ be heard?
How can I better protect boundaries for my team members?
How might this increase their trust in me? And what about motivation?
Boundary Myth #4: Boundaries create Barriers.
Some like to have an “open door policy”. Is this healthy? It depends on what we mean. If “open door” means “unrestricted access”… it’s not healthy and in the end, it can’t even be true. Because, actually, there really is a limit to my accessibility. Boundaries are transparent; Barriers are a mystery. Boundaries are consistent and made known; Barriers are always moving and they feel like a surprise. Boundaries define the way you can access the best of me; Barriers make me inaccessible. When you feel like I’m hiding from you, that’s an unhealthy barrier. When you know what my needs and limitations are, that’s a healthy boundary. When we trust each other, we make ourselves vulnerable to each other and we share our boundaries. And that cultivates more trust!
Boundary Truth #4: Healthy Boundaries eliminate Barriers.
How can I make my boundaries more transparent so they don’t become barriers?
What relationships might grow in trust as a result?
What conversations do we need to have with our supervisors and team members to clarify boundaries in order to cultivate trust?[Submitted by: Cindy Schmelzenbach]

Going Beyond Borders & Barriers - Land in Restricted Access Area..
Urgent Need
Asia-Pacific Region: An urgent need has arisen in a restricted access area for partners to help with the continuation of a very strategic project.
Funds are being raised to secure a 20-year land lease allowing us to keep an established work alive in a poor rural area. Security reasons don't allow a description of how this land is to be used other than to say full-time activities are occurring there now by a dedicated man and wife who have a tremendous vision to connect with and train young people. If sufficient funds are not immediately raised, all the improvements placed on this location through a short-term temporary lease will be lost.
Please visit the below link to see how you, your Church, or small group could join in the Kingdom impact in this Restricted Access Area.

A Tribute to Ajaarn Sawat Hahom
Thailand: On February 1, 2017, we received the news of Ajaarn Sawat Hahom’s passing. Sawat was the former District Superintendent of the Thailand district, serving the district from 2001- 2016.Read: Prayer Requested for Former Thai District Superintendent Sawat Hahom
Born on June 30, 1952, to Mr. Thong and Mrs. Pin Hahom, Sawat was the eldest of six siblings. He grew up in a Christian family in Khonkaen, Northeastern Thailand. He was married to Palida, who had passed away in February 2013. They have two daughters- Narissa (Nok) and Panasda (Gop.)

Sawat surrendered his life to the Lord as a young man and soon began to serve God with his whole heart. He served Christ for nearly 50 full years by making disciples through the Christian and Missionary Alliance as Campus Crusade Jesus Film Coordinator, pastor of Bangkok First Church of the Nazarene and Situek Church of the Nazarene, and as Thailand District Superintendent in the Church of the Nazarene.
Sawat traveled throughout Southeast Asia, USA, and even into parts of Europe, making disciples. Some of the people he has discipled are now pastors and church leaders serving in the Thailand District Church of the Nazarene. Among them are Suvit and Pastor Lamp. Suvit came to Christ after walking many kilometers to meet Sawat who then answered his questions about Jesus, introducing him to Christ. Suvit is now the District Secretary of the Thailand District. Pastor Lamp also attributes much of his ministerial growth to the close and patient mentoring of Sawat. Pastor Lamp is now the Thailand District Superintendent.

Indeed, Sawat was a great leader and mentor; but he was also a loving husband and father. Anyone who knew him knew he loved his family almost as much as he loved his Lord Jesus.

Sawat’s daughter Nok once asked him why their family always had to live in difficult circumstances. He answered that when we serve the Lord we accept whatever the circumstances, no matter how hard. Wherever God leads, that’s where we go. The family used to tell each other they would always be fine because they have each other. When Palida died, Sawat asked his daughters, “What will I do now?” The daughters responded, “You will be surrounded by us and cared for.” He replied with his characteristic smile, “Yes, for sure. I still have much to do.” Now as he has passed to his heavenly home, both girls feel the sting of having no parents. But when asked what will they do, they reply, “We have each other.”
Sawat’s life verse was Acts 20:24: “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.”

Sawat is survived by his two daughters, son-in-law and four grandchildren, in addition to extended family members.
Everyone who knew Sawat remembers his laughter, his love of words, and his ready smile, as well as his prayers. May we imitate Sawat Hahom who so faithfully followed Jesus and made Christlike disciples in the nations.
From the family: (translated from a Facebook message of February 5, 2017)
“Thank you to everyone who has come to my Father’s memorial services. Thank you for all the prayers, love and care, encouragement and help that you have sent to our family. We are sincerely grateful. May God bless each and every one of you.”[Submitted by: SE Asia Communications]

Church Family Growing – New Church in Myanmar!
Tahan Zone, Myanmar: A great celebration was held on Sunday, February 12th, as another church was organized in Myanmar. The Gosen Church of the Nazarene, is located 9 miles outside of Kalaymyo in a location considered to be the gateway to Chin state and India.
Rev. Ro Ding Liana, the Tahan Zone Coordinator, officiated the ceremony for the Burmese-speaking church of ten adults and children. The church is a house church, located in the residence of a Burmese widow, and is being led by pastor Pi. Lalkhumi. Pastor Lalkhumi is currently enrolled in the course of study leading to ordination, as administered by Southeast Asia Nazarene Bible College (SEANBC).
“We discussed about more church planting programs and making disciples more and more,” shared Rev. Liana. “Today we sensed the power of the Holy Spirit touching every one of us as we sang and prayed together.”
“We are hoping to reach our neighbors who have not yet received the good news of Jesus,” said Pastor Lalkhumi.

Please commit to pray for the ongoing work in Myanmar; for the protection of the church leaders; and for the continued movement of the Holy Spirit! God is truly at work in this southeast Asia nation![Submitted: Rev. Ro Ding Liana]
