When a group of women and I were on a mission trip to New York City, we served in a number of soup kitchens. We were coached to look each person in the eye as we gave them their food. For many of the people we were serving, the usual response they expected to elicit was avoidance or disgust. They were used to being looked over and stepped over by people walking by them on the street.
Looking someone in the eye is one way of saying, "I see you. You matter to me." Because of God's profound glory, people were unable to look God directly in the eye without dying. Jesus, in his earthly body, changed that. Mary kissed God's face! But we who are living now still long for the pleasure of seeing and touching Jesus. This hymn reminds us that indeed, the glorious day will come when we will all see Jesus face-to-face. O blissful moment!
O Lord, help us to see your presence in the gift of Jesus made flesh. And then enable us to be expressions of your presence in the loving and caring for our neighbor’s need. Amen.
