A Word from John Wesley
“God does nothing but in answer to prayer; and even they who have been converted to God without praying for it themselves, (which is exceeding rare,) were not without the prayers of others. Every new victory which a soul gains is the effect of a new prayer.”[John Wesley, Plain Account of Christian Perfection, 1777, Q37, A.5.]
A Hymn from Charles Wesley
1. So shall I do thy will below
As angels do above;
The virtue of thy Passion show,
The triumphs of thy love.
2. Thy love the conquest more than gains;
To all I shall proclaim
Jesus the king, the conqu’ror, reigns—
Bow down to Jesu’s name.(Collection-1781, #267: 9 & 10)
Questions for Reflection:
- John Wesley’s statement that “God does nothing but in answer to prayer” is very clear. Do you think it is too strong or absolute? How would you change it if you were giving him advice today?
- Is there anything in John’s statement that challenges or offends you?
- What do you think Charles Wesley is saying in these stanzas of his hymn?
- How can you put message from Charles Wesley into practice today?
O God most holy, in Jesus Christ you have laid a foundation upon which to build our lives. Help us to follow your perfect law of love, that we may fulfill it and observe it to the end. Amen.
