The Deaf Devo from The Deaf Missions in Council Bluffs, Iowa, United States "Jesus’ Parables (5)" Bible Reading: Matthew 25:1-13 for Sunday, 5 February 2017
Matthew 25:1 “The Kingdom of Heaven at that time will be like ten bridesmaids who took their lamps and went out to meet the groom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were sensible. 3 The foolish ones took lamps with them but no oil, 4 whereas the others took flasks of oil with their lamps. 5 Now the bridegroom was late, so they all went to sleep. 6 It was the middle of the night when the cry rang out, ‘The bridegroom is here! Go out to meet him!’ 7 The girls all woke up and prepared their lamps for lighting. 8 The foolish ones said to the sensible ones, ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ 9 ‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both you and us. Go to the oil dealers and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 But as they were going off to buy, the bridegroom came. Those who were ready went with him to the wedding feast, and the door was shut. 11 Later, the other bridesmaids came. ‘Sir! Sir!’ they cried, ‘Let us in!’ 12 But he answered, ‘Indeed! I tell you, I don’t know you!’ 13 So stay alert, because you know neither the day nor the hour.

Jesus told another parable to His followers. This story was about ten girls. These ten girls were waiting for a bridegroom to come to his wedding feast. Jesus said that five girls were foolish and five girls were wise. Why? Because five girls brought more oil to use in their lamps. The other five girls did not bring extra oil for their lamps.
At midnight someone announced that the bridegroom was coming. The five foolish girls did not have oil for their lamps. They asked the wise girls to give them oil. But the wise girls answered, “No…go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves” (verse 9b). While the five foolish girls were buying oil, the bridegroom came. The doors were locked. When the five foolish girls returned, they could not go into the wedding feast.
Jesus told this parable to help us understand that we should always be ready for Him to come back. Jesus may come back today to take His followers to live with Him forever. I hope you are ready!
PRAYER: God, I want to be ready for Jesus to return. In His name. Amen.

Matthew 21:28 “But give me your opinion: a man had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’ 29 He answered, ‘I don’t want to’; but later he changed his mind and went. 30 The father went to his other son and said the same thing. This one answered, ‘I will, sir’; but he didn’t go. 31 Which of the two did what his father wanted?” “The first,” they replied. “That’s right!” Yeshua said to them. “I tell you that the tax-collectors and prostitutes are going into the Kingdom of God ahead of you! 32 For Yochanan came to you showing the path to righteousness, and you wouldn’t trust him. The tax-collectors and prostitutes trusted him; but you, even after you saw this, didn’t change your minds later and trust him.
-------
Jesus told His followers a story about two sons. The father asked both sons to work in the vineyard. One son said he would not go and work. But later he decided that he would work in the vineyard. The second son said he would work, but he did not go to the vineyard. Jesus asked in verse 31a, “‘Which of the two sons obeyed his father?’ The Jewish leaders answered, ‘The first son.’”
Sometimes we say that we want to serve God. But then we conintue to disobey God. Maybe we go to church on Sunday, but on Monday we act like we are not Christians. Maybe we even try to look like a Christian, but inside we do not want to obey God. God wants us to serve Him every day of the week. He wants us to be true Christians, not pretend Christians.
I hope that you are truly serving and obeying God. Ask Him to help you stay close to Him. Live for God every day of your life.
PRAYER: Dear God, I want to obey You and be a good example for other people. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Matthew 18:12 “What’s your opinion? What will somebody do who has a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine on the hillsides and go off to find the stray? 13 And if he happens to find it? Yes! I tell you he is happier over it than over the ninety-nine that never strayed! 14 Thus your Father in heaven does not want even one of these little ones to be lost.
-------
In Bible times, there were many shepherds. Shepherds are people who take care of sheep. They feed their sheep and watch them at night. Shepherds make sure that wild animals do not attack the sheep. The sheep trust their shepherd and obey his voice.
Today in our Bible Reading, Jesus told a story about a man who lost one sheep. He had one hundred sheep, but one was lost. All the sheep were important to the shepherd. But he left the ninety-nine sheep to go looking for the one that was missing. The shepherd was worried about the lost sheep. He did not want that one sheep to be hurt or killed.
Jesus is our shepherd. We are His sheep. Jesus loves us and wants us to be safe. If one person stops following Him, Jesus wants that person to follow Him again. Jesus does not want one person to be lost without salvation. Jesus wants to be your shepherd. He wants you to follow Him, too!
PRAYER: Thank You, Lord, for loving me and taking care of me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
