ENC, Trevecca exploring partnership
Trevecca Nazarene University is located in Nashville, Tennessee.Eastern Nazarene College and Trevecca Nazarene University have begun exploring a partnership aimed at strengthening the institutions’ shared mission of providing a Christian liberal arts education centered on service and leadership.
At campus community meetings held on both campuses February 6, college leaders said the partnership is an innovative way to provide a high-quality liberal arts education in a Christian setting.
“This collaboration can broaden and deepen the opportunities for our students,” said Dan Boone, Trevecca president. “We envision semester options for our students to study American history in Boston or music or Civil War history in Nashville.”
ENC President Corlis McGee — who in 2016 announced her intention to step down as president at the end of this academic year — said administration officials of both institutions have already begun collaborative conversations, facilitated by consultant William Crothers of Presidential Leadership Associates.
“The proposed partnership would create expanded course offerings and opportunities for students of both institutions,” McGee said. “Technology would allow for expanded course offerings at both ENC and Trevecca, and exchanges could be arranged for both faculty and students.”
Eastern Nazarene College is located in Quincy, Massachusetts.College officials said the proposed partnership includes shared administrative oversight, operational cost efficiencies, shared program resources and expanded impact. Each institution’s Board of Trustees will consider the proposal at their upcoming spring meetings.
The proposal comes at a time when Trevecca is experiencing dramatic growth. Founded in 1901, the 116-year-old comprehensive university is the fastest growing university in Middle Tennessee, adding 581 students to total enrollment in the last year for a total enrollment of 3,221. Trevecca’s School of Graduate and Continuing Studies achieved a 47 percent year-over-year increase in adult studies and graduate students from fall 2015 to fall 2016.
With students from 34 states and 12 countries, ENC is recognized as one of the most diverse and multicultural Christian colleges in the country. Its highly respected faculty, low student-to-faculty ratio, strong community partnerships and close proximity to Boston afford ENC students with extensive opportunities for academic and cultural enrichment, valuable fellowships and internships, and opportunities to live out their faith through meaningful service and mission work. For its commitment to combining "the best in education with the best in Christian faith, " ENC has been recognized as one of the 10 Best Christian Colleges and Universities in the North (2017), the 50 Best Value Christian Colleges and Universities (2016) and the 50 Most Affordable Christian Colleges and Universities (2015, 2016.)[Trevecca Nazarene University, Eastern Nazarene College]

Peru churches request prayer following floods, mudslidesNonstop rain over the past two weeks has caused several floods and mudslides in Peru, leaving a trail of destruction and killing at least 13 people. With more heavy rain forecasted for the next few days, leaders in Peru anticipate the situation to worsen.
Nazarene churches in Peru are working to assist their communities by providing food, safe water, and emergency response kits. At least two districts have been affected. In the North Peru District (with 75 Nazarene churches), more than 700 houses have collapsed and 1,500 people have been affected. On the North Pacific District (65 Nazarene churches), 101 houses were declared inhabitable by the authorities and nearly 1,300 people were affected.
As the streets remain flooded, there is a great fear for the spread of diseases due to the standing waters.
How to help
Pray for affected families and for local churches as they respond to the needs in their local communities.

Sealands Field trains hundreds on disaster preparationThe Sealands Field, in conjunction with Asia-Pacific Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, hosted a disaster preparedness conference on the Indonesia Nazarene Theological College campus January 30 through February 3 with more than 220 participants.
“Compassion is the church in action” was the focus of the conference. Each day explored a different aspect of disaster preparedness. The first day was about personal and family preparation for disaster, the second was about preparing a local church for disaster, and the third day was about preparing to help children in a disaster and helping to prevent human trafficking after a disaster. The final day focused on preparing local churches to help their communities in a time of disaster.
Conference speakers included Curt Luthye from the California Red Cross and Philippine-Micronesia Field Strategy Coordinator Stephen Gualberto, who came with Jackson Natividad, Jasmine Eugenio, and Leody Eschavez from the Philippines NCM. Asia-Pacific NCM Coordinator John Watton also brought a message to the conference.
One of the anticipated outcomes of this conference was not only to raise awareness for the need to be prepared, but to also create an opportunity for God to speak into the hearts of the participants. Sealands Field leaders want to create an NCM disaster team made up of people who have God’s heart for people in distress. This team will be further educated, coached, and given practical experiences. From there, the team will go out to the various parts of the field to train pastors, churches, zones, and districts in disaster preparedness, response, and rehabilitation.
The participants, who came from six different countries and many contexts, enjoyed vidoes translated to visually present the message, were trained in rescue skills, and were given instruction and supplies for clean water.
In preparation for the conference, NTC–Indonesia made significant changes to turn the campus into a disaster response center. Washblocks, large portable tents, and other items were built to increase the campus capacity to host displaced people.
During the conference, a new warehouse being built on campus to store disaster response items was dedicated. This warehouse will serve a wide swath of the island of Java, and warehouses in other areas are being planned.
The hosting district superintendent described the event as eye opening and challenged participants to whole-heartedly focus on ministry surrounding children and young people.
Sealands Field leaders requests prayer, that open eyes and new vision will translate into compassion as a lifestyle all across the Sealands. [Church of the Nazarene Asia-Pacific]

Nazarene Youth International launches Timothy Award Recipient DatabaseNazarene Youth International recently launched the Timothy Award Recipient Database, an online directory of the more than 650 deserving individuals who have received a Timothy Award in the past 22 years.
Established in 1995, the Timothy Award is presented to youth workers, volunteers, pastors, camp directors, Bible Quizzing coaches, district superintendents, professors, and others who demonstrate personal commitment to youth through service and sacrifice.
Churches, districts, fields, and regions nominate candidates by submitting an application and nomination letter. The letters are typically filled with stories of the generous and loving ways the nominee has faithfully invested in their youth over the years. These individuals live their lives in ways that embody the words of the Apostle Paul, who recognized Timothy’s commitment to the needs of others: “I have no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your welfare” (Philippians 2:20).
Nazarene Youth International came up with the idea for a database during the 20th anniversary of the Timothy Award in 2015 and set to work collecting quotes about and pictures of as many recipients as possible. Each database entry includes the name of the recipient, the year the award was presented, the recipient’s home country, who presented the award, a quote from the nominating entity (if available), and a picture of the recipient (if available). The database will be regularly updated as new recipients are named and as missing details are received.
Candidates for a Timothy Award must have served in youth ministry for a minimum of 10 years. For more information about how to submit an application, click here.[Nazarene Youth International]

Flags of the Nations: Ireland
The flag of Ireland is a tricolour of green, white, and orange where green represents the Gaelic tradition of Ireland, orange represents the followers of William of Orange in Ireland, and white represents the aspiration for peace between them.

Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Ireland
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Ireland in 1987.
Ireland had a population of 4,952,473 in 2016. That same year, Ireland reported one organized Church of the Nazarene. Ireland has 48 total members.
Located on the Eurasia Region, Ireland is a Pioneer Area district. For more information about the Eurasia Region, visit eurasiaregion.org.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole.
The Global Ministry Center is the mission and service hub of the Church of the Nazarene.

Argentina camp leaves youth 'On Fire' to influence communitiesMore than 400 young people from the Argentina Central District gathered January 27 through 29 for On Fire, a camp directed by district Nazarene Youth International president Juan Ignacio Marino and his team. The camp was centered on Leviticus 6:13: "The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out."
The youth experienced the presence of God through devotions, plenary sessions, times of praise and worship, and altar calls. Each day's sessions focused on one thing the youth can do — awaken, act, and impact — to influence a world that needs Jesus Christ to attain salvation and be reborn to a new life with Him.
On Fire featured national and international music bands and several speakers, including Ana Maria dos Santos, David Gonzalez, Adrián Intieri, Leandro Barreto, and District Superintendent Marcelo Correa.
The camp ended with God's promise to all those who accept the challenge of impacting lives through the message of salvation: "And I will be with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20b).[Church of the Nazarene South America]

Bakersfield, California
One hundred years youngAt just about 100 years old, Bakersfield Church of the Nazarene in California is drawing in a new generation of teenagers from its surrounding neighborhoods.
Donabel Martin is the outreach and young adult pastor, as well as an interim youth pastor. She and her lead pastors and the congregation have tried to create a foundation for the church based on the concept of being good neighbors. Bakersfield First, which has an average attendance of about 200, has developed both long-term programs and short-term events to reach them.
“Our pastors are preaching what it means for our church to be open,” she said.
One program that has impacted a wide variety of people is Celebrate Recovery, a program which brings the community and the local church together to support each other in becoming free of substance abuse, addiction and life's hurts, habits and hang-ups.
A younger teen who attends the program with her mother was recently connected to the youth group. Over time, more and more teens accompanying their parents in Celebrate Recovery have joined the church’s youth group, as well. It was difficult at first for teens from various backgrounds to mingle and mix well, but after some time, relationships were built. It has changed the DNA of youth ministry at Bakersfield First as a whole.
“We are starting to see youth ministry transferring from ‘me, me, me’ to ‘us,’ being open to everyone. Change is really happening on both sides,” Martin said. For the rest of the story, see Engage magazine.

One hundred years young by Kaitlyn Williams
At just about 100 years old – the point when many aging churches end their natural life cycle by closing their doors – Bakersfield Church of the Nazarene, in California, is drawing in a new generation of teenagers from the surrounding neighborhoods.
Donabel Martin is the outreach and young adult pastor, as well as an interim youth pastor. She and her lead pastors and the congregation have tried to create a foundation for the church based on the concept of being good neighbors. Bakersfield First, which has an average attendance of about 200, has developed both long-term programs and short events to reach them.
New teens are feeling more welcome and are attending more often, and teens already at the church are learning to accept people from different ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
Another way the teens and leaders at Bakersfield First have reached out to the community has been through athletics, primarily basketball. Teens come to play on the court at the church, and slowly, build relationships with church members. These teens have become part of the fabric of this church.
This fall, the church held a fall party for the neighborhood with bounce houses, food, games, a “trunk or treat” (decorated cars, with candy in the trunks to distribute to children) and the invitation for children to attend in costumes. More than 800 people attended.
“When I was at the ‘trunk or treat,’ you couldn’t tell who was who or who ‘belonged’ with whom. We were all there to be the community together,” Martin said. “Not all stories are celebration stories, but even in that, I know God is working.”

Indianapolis, Indiana
General Assembly participants invited to attend prayer retreat
Participants from a previous pre-General Assembly prayer retreat.
As Nazarenes from around the world arrive in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, for General Assembly and Conventions, some will be gathered for a 24-hour period of prayer and reflection. This pre-event prayer retreat allows participants to pray for the upcoming times of worship, service, fellowship, training, and important decision-making that will affect future generations of Nazarenes.
Developed by leaders from Church of the Nazarene higher education institutions, the retreat is based on Jesus’ invitation to his disciples to “Come away . . . and rest a while” (Mark 6:31). The leaders, Including Deirdre Brower-Latz (Nazarene Theological College–Manchester), Rhonda Carrim (Northwest Nazarene University), Terry Fach (Ambrose University), Doug Hardy (Nazarene Theological Seminary), Rebecca Laird (Point Loma Nazarene University), and Doug VanNest (Mount Vernon Nazarene University), will direct Scripture presentations based on Ephesians 4:1-16, as well as times of community and private prayer.
“Prayer is the central practice of the Christian faith and something we are called to engage in with intention and together as God's people,” Hardy said. “I look forward to the 2017 pre-General Assembly prayer retreat as an opportunity to join with fellow Nazarenes in placing ourselves before God in prayer — listening and petitioning — so that our hearts may be tuned to the Holy Spirit for the conventions and assembly to follow.”
Participants from past retreats are thankful for this time dedicated to prayer.
“In 2009, I became aware of a pre-assembly retreat, and my wife and I decided to attend,” said Randall Craker, Northwest district superintendent. “What I experienced was an intentional quieting time to prepare my heart for the inspiration and the work that was ahead. I also found great delight in the setting, the interaction with people from across the country, and engaging in a time of guided prayer and heart formation.”
The retreat will be held Monday afternoon, 19 June through Tuesday afternoon, 20 June at the Benedict Inn Retreat & Conference Center, located 15 minutes from the Indiana Convention Center, where most General Assembly events will be located.
Event costs range from $99 to $149 depending on room choice, and rates will increase after March 31. There are a limited number of rooms available, so reservations will be accepted and confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition to lodging, the price also includes three meals. Each participant is responsible for their own transportation to and from Indianapolis.
A scholarship fund will be available to help participants from outside the USA compensate for currency exchange loss. To request assistance from the scholarship fund, email Doug Hardy at dshardy@nts.edu with information about how much you can pay and in what currency.
For more information about how to register or how to give to the scholarship fund, visit the NTS website.
