Hello Hearts!
We are on to Ehrman Chapter 5 and it's a doozy!! Below are some thoughts for discussion this Sunday.
Ehrman Chap. 5
p.181 – oral cultures and memory
Ehrman addresses the idea that oral cultures had more vigorous memory capacity than we have.
Gives evidence against this – let’s discuss those:’
1. Biological evidence – p. 182
2. Nothing to check oral memory against
3. Studies by Parry & Lord of Yugoslov singers – p. 184… singers insist that performances were “the same” every time when they demonstrably were not!
a. What makes them insist????
4. Goody’s work with LoDagoo – p. 188 – myth that “everyone knows” – but it changes all the time. Why is it still accepted???
5. Vansina – chart: observer à prototestimony à chain of transmission à final informant à recorder à earliest written record. P. 190
a. Includes the fact that tellers are speaking to a particular audience and tailoring their story for that audience. Just like the gospels and Paul’s letters.
p. 192…Gist memories – what do you consider the gist of Jesus?
p. 196 – Sermon on the Mount – did it happen?
What about discrepancies from Matthew with other gospels?
p. 200 – what are the rules about divorce?
p. 202 – Marriage feast – makes sense after Jesus dies and after 70 AD but not before – so did Jesus say it? Also wise vs foolish virgins.
p. 205 – Nicodemus – greek word has double meaning needed to make it work. But it does not exist in the Aramaic word!!
p. 208 – Gist of Jesus teaching = imminent arrival of the Kingdom of God. But by John, it has changed to living with God forever. Jesus preaches more about himself. See p. 211 – end of 2cd paragraph.
p. 211 – Jesus baptism – what did the voice say? Top of p. 213 – adoption – was Jesus the adopted son of God?
p. 216 – calling the disciples – different in John and Mark – contradictory
p. 217 – Jesus anointed by a woman – very different in Mark, John and Luke
p. 221 – Miracles – more pronounced as time passes and always make a theological point. Show Jesus as son of God as signs of his identity.
I look forward to seeing you all again and to our usual lively talk.
