"Notes from the Pastor" will return on February 23. Pastor Molly is away on a Spiritual Renewal Leave. During this time, we have some excellent preachers scheduled to lead worship. Stephen Hale, who is currently our Seminary Intern as well as Youth Director, will be handling day-to-day pastoral concerns. Rev. Nicole Reilley will also be helping support him in that work. Next week our Seminary intern will share his thoughts in our eNews.

Lessons from the Sermon on the Mount
"The Kingdom of Salt & Light"
Rev. Nicole Reilley, guest preacher
Matthew 5:13-16
Scripture Text: Matthew 5:13 “You are salt for the Land. But if salt becomes tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except being thrown out for people to trample on.
14 “You are light for the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Likewise, when people light a lamp, they don’t cover it with a bowl but put it on a lampstand, so that it shines for everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before people, so that they may see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.
John Wesley's Notes Commentary: Matthew 5:13-16
Verse 13
[13] Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
Ye — Not the apostles, not ministers only; but all ye who are thus holy, are the salt of the earth - Are to season others. Mark 9:50; Luke 14:34.
Verse 14
[14] Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Ye are the light of the world — If ye are thus holy, you can no more be hid than the sun in the firmament: no more than a city on a mountain - Probably pointing to that on the brow of the opposite hill.
Verse 15
[15] Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Nay, the very design of God in giving you this light was, that it might shine. Mark 4:21; Luke 8:16; 11:33.
Verse 16
[16] Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
That they may see — and glorify - That is, that seeing your good works, they may be moved to love and serve God likewise.

"Let It Shine"
Oh yeah [4x]
It's been a long road but we're finally here
And the view from the top so beautifully clear
We can see for forever not a cloud in the sky
Picture perfect weather everyday of our lives
Just imagine if everything you wanted came true
Well it happened to me so it can happen to you
We're on a journey of truth and belief is the key
So open up your heart and let your life free
Oh
And I feel like I'm glowing
And I like where I'm going
Tonight, I'm showing up to shine
This little light of mine (OK, OK, OK)
I'm gonna let it shine (alright, alright, alright)
This little light of mine (OK, OK, OK)
I'm gonna let it shine (alright, alright, alright)
This little light of mine (OK, alright, OK)
I'm gonna let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
Front to back we're packing, stomping
Clapping, laughing, singing, dancing
Passion ever lasting
When I'm rapping to the track and
Asking everyone to put your hands up
Stand up
Roxanne come take my hand
And make the congregation rock
Celebrating and it feels so good
If I could thank everybody here I would
I feel like I'm finally free and I
Yeah I'm ready, I'm ready, I'm ready to fly
Yeah, oh
And I feel like I'm glowing
And I like where I'm going
Tonight, I'm showing up to shine
This little light of mine (OK, OK, OK)
I'm gonna let it shine (alright, alright, alright)
This little light of mine (OK, OK, OK)
I'm gonna let it shine (alright, alright, alright)
This little light of mine (OK, alright, OK)
I'm gonna let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
You know it wants to come out
Don't hide your shine, y'all
Now put your hands in sky
'Cause your light is your love
Oh yeah [4x]
This little light of mine (this little light of mine)
I'm gonna let it shine (I'm gonna let it shine)
This little light of mine (yeah)
I'm gonna let it shine (I'm gonna let it shine)
This little light of mine (this little light of mine)
I'm gonna let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine, shine

"THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE"
1. This little light of mine
I'm going to let it shine
Oh, this little light of mine
I'm going to let it shine
Hallelujah
This little light of mine
I'm going to let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
2. Ev'ry where I go
I'm going to let it shine
Oh, ev'ry where I go
I'm going to let it shine
Hallelujah
Ev'ry where I go
I'm going to let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
3. All in my house
I'm going to let it shine
Oh, all in my house
I'm going to let it shine
Hallelujah
All in my house
I'm going to let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
4. I'm not going to make it shine
I'm just going to let it shine
I'm not going to make it shine
I'm just going to let it shine
Hallelujah
I'm not going to make it shine
I'm just going to let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
5. Out in the dark
I'm going to let it shine
Oh, out in the dark
I'm going to let it shine
Hallelujah
Out in the dark
I'm going to let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine

For Sunday, February 5...
They are finishing the sale of specially delivered Valentines to your special friends and loved ones today between and after Worship. It's a fund raiser our young people are operating, so get signed up for it today, the last day, I'm told. After all, they have to get them delivered next Sunday.
With today's guest preacher being Rev. Nicole Reilley, our church member and frequent leader of worship replacing Pastor Molly Vetter, we feel right at home as she leads us. Last week we heard Terence Hagans, who had been mentored by Pastor Molly in San Diego. His leadership was very well received by one and all. Next Sunday we are again hearing a familiar voice from Stephen Hale as he teaches us. We are fortunate to be able to hear these important leaders from our pulpit.
With our church celebrating Soup-er Bowl Sunday, it's a time to remember our Shared Bread program and if possible contribute items or cash to this on-going Wednesday night event of feeding the hungry. If you volunteer, great. If not, you can do as I do, make a cash donation. They can use it and will use it to further the program. Our church support is the basis for their success over these many years.
While praying for and thinking about Pastor Molly in Paris, France, I remember my very first visit to Paris in 1957. Trying to be a good tourist, I practiced my college French and got nowhere. Thinking back on it, the locals saw me as an American in U. S. clothes, thought I was speaking English and, due to my atrocious pronunciation couldn't understand a word I said. Three days later I was happy to be in London where I had less of a problem being understood.

January 2017 Finance UpdateAs we begin 2017, we are facing two serious challenges to our budget: We have used almost all of the funds in our Ministerial Support Fund. Also, we ended the 2016 budget year with considerably fewer donations than we had anticipated. Moving into the new year, we project we may have $20,000 fewer in contributions than what we budgeted for last year.
We are looking closely at our budget, to see where we can spend less money. It is my belief that we can trim our expenses without cutting staff or significantly impairing our ability to do the meaningful work of the church. We will be trying some new ways of doing things to save money. We are also inviting you to consider taking a step up in your giving at this moment in the church’s life. This is a time when it would make a clear difference for our congregation to increase your giving to the church.
Even with these challenges that I’ve named, there is so much to celebrate about our generosity. Fifty-three families have already pledged to give more in 2017. This is incredible!
I believe that with $20,000 in additional increased pledged commitments and the same amount of careful reductions in expenses, we could close the gap between our projected income and expenses, while maintaining our incredible staff, meaningful ministry programs and vital worship.
You can submit a pledge of giving online, here.
You can also read more about our church budget at the link above. We are able to do so much together!

Lent begins March 1; we invite you to join us for a special six-week study and sermon series, about what we believe, and why. Walking through the traditional statements of faith that are a part of our Apostles’ Creed, we will have a chance to look closely at what it means (and doesn’t mean) to say we believe. Based on a new book by United Methodist pastor Adam Hamilton, called Creed, this study will be used across all the age levels of our congregation, to open up conversation and deepen our faith.
An Invitation to LEARN and LEAD: Would you consider serving as a leader for a small group during our Lent this year? For the six weeks of Lent, we will invite people to meet together weekly, in small groups, where we will watch a video lesson that goes with the book, and share in conversation together. Would you be willing to lead or help lead one of those small groups?
From March 1 to April 16, your small group could meet at whatever day and time is good for you, either at your home or the church--it would be up to you to choose options that are good.
If you are willing to lead one of the these groups Rev. Nicole invites you to one of three training sessions; you just need to attend the one that works best for you.
The 30-minute training sessions will be:
Sundays, Feb 5, 12 and 19 after 10:30 worship!

He recorded 35 singles, 5 released posthumously, that reached the top 10 of the Billboard Country and Western best sellers, 11 of which reached #1 (3 posthumously). He was born Hiram King Williams (he changed his name to Hank because he thought it was better for country music) in Mount Olive, Alabama in 1923 and began his music career in 1937 (at the age of 14!) in Montgomery. Although he could not read or write music, he joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1949 after his version of Lovesick Blues became a monster country hit and stayed at #1 for 4 consecutive months. Years of back pain, alcoholism and prescription drug abuse took their toll on his health and he died in 1953 at the age of 29. His song I Saw The Light was inspired in 1947 when, during a road trip with his mother at the wheel, she woke him up to tell him "I just saw the light", referring to the lights of Dannelly Field Airport, meaning they were close to Montgomery. It was written in 1947, recorded and released in 1948 and, while it didn't enjoy great success during his lifetime, it became a gospel standard and also became the closing song for all of his shows.
Sandi Patti was born in Oklahoma City to a musical family, her father being a church music director and her mother being a church organist. Growing up in Phoenix and then San Diego, she studied at San Diego State University and Anderson University in Indiana, where she studied voice and conducting. In the late 70's, while studying at Anderson, she began working as a studio singer, recording, among other things, the iconic Juicy Fruit gum commercial. After graduating, she began working with Bill Gaither and Singspiration! Records and built a huge career in the Christian pop world. Throughout the 80's she performed to sold out arenas, stadiums and concert halls, averaging 200 concerts a year and getting the label of the "highest paid singer in Christian music", averaging over $100,000 a performance. After a career setback in the early 90's, she rebuilt her career and began doing pop concerts with orchestras all over the country. These days she has followed in the footsteps of Amy Grant and crossed over from Christian music to pop music, especially Broadway. Shine Down was released on the album From The Heart in 1984.
This week we are joined by the children, who will insert the old familiar This Little Light Of Mine into the choir's anthem. This Little Light Of Mine has been thought to be a spiritual, but there is no evidence to support that. It was first collected and published by John Lomax in 1939 as a folk song. Our anthem was written by Lloyd Larsen, who employed the technique called "Hide-A-Tune" – inserting a familiar tune into an original piece.
