From Stephen Hale: The Triumphs of His Grace
This past Monday night, our church hosted a community event that sheds some light on who we are as a church. We hosted an event for Inalienable, the parent organization that runs the annual Baja Mission trips. During Baja Mission 2016, our young people were challenged to live out their faith in the world. Some of them chose to start Inalienable clubs at local high schools. This past year, twenty or thirty students at Redondo Union have gathered to talk about going on Baja Mission 2017. Because of our church’s unique position between Inalienable, the high school, and these clubs, we hosted a meeting where parents from these clubs could hear from Inalienable about this summer trip.
Sometimes it is intimidating to think about how to follow Jesus in the world around us. There are dozens and dozens of overwhelming questions about the right way to do that. Our youth started an ostensibly secular club on their High School campus out of love for marginalized people in Baja. Is that following Jesus? Shared Bread made a decision 25 years ago that distinguished it from many other meal programs: they do not have an explicitly religious component. Is that following Jesus? Eric French helps people in emergencies every week (he’s worked a variety of jobs for the LA Fire Department) while Sydney French develops skills as a lifeguard each summer that might help her do similar stuff later in life. Chances are low Sydney will be able to tell people, “I was here because God fostered a love inside of me for my neighbors. Just so you know.” Is that following Jesus?
I think so! It seems to me the gospel of Jesus is the announcement of a better world. Jesus called this better world the Kingdom of God, and our work toward that world He described is faithfulness to the Gospel. I see that almost daily in our church! Our prayer ministry calls folks, pushing back against the encroaching darkness of solitude. Will & Grace Martens try to marshal resources for poor Oaxacans in Vicente Guerrero, pushing back against the darkness of marginalization. Risa Vargas teaches children about the God who loves them (and also loves everyone else), pushing at the darkness that is our disconnect from God. Like at the late Christmas Eve service, Jesus is the light of the world, and we carry that Light into the darkness. I’m thankful more and more to be a part of a community doing this good work.
Carry on, church!
Stephen Hale
Pastor Molly is away on a Spiritual Renewal Leave. During this time, we have some excellent preachers scheduled to lead worship. Stephen Hale, who is currently our Seminary Intern as well as Youth Director, will be handling day-to-day pastoral concerns. Rev. Nicole Reilley will also be helping support him in that work.

"Build Your Kingdom Here"
Stephen Hale, guest preacher
Matthew 5:21-37
Scripture Texts:
Matthew 5:

21 “You have heard that our fathers were told, ‘Do not murder,’[Matthew 5:21 Exodus 20:13, Deuteronomy 5:17] and that anyone who commits murder will be subject to judgment. 22 But I tell you that anyone who nurses anger against his brother will be subject to judgment; that whoever calls his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing!’ will be brought before the Sanhedrin; that whoever says, ‘Fool!’ incurs the penalty of burning in the fire of Gei-Hinnom! 23 So if you are offering your gift at the Temple altar and you remember there that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift where it is by the altar, and go, make peace with your brother. Then come back and offer your gift. 25 If someone sues you, come to terms with him quickly, while you and he are on the way to court; or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer of the court, and you may be thrown in jail! 26 Yes indeed! I tell you, you will certainly not get out until you have paid the last penny.

27 “You have heard that our fathers were told, ‘Do not commit adultery.’[Matthew 5:27 Exodus 20:13(14); Deuteronomy 5:17(18)] 28 But I tell you that a man who even looks at a woman with the purpose of lusting after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye makes you sin, gouge it out and throw it away! Better that you should lose one part of you than have your whole body thrown into Gei-Hinnom. 30 And if your right hand makes you sin, cut it off and throw it away! Better that you should lose one part of you than have your whole body thrown into Gei-Hinnom.
31 “It was said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a get.’[Matthew 5:31 Deuteronomy 24:1] 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of fornication, makes her an adulteress; and that anyone who marries a divorcee commits adultery.
33 “Again, you have heard that our fathers were told, ‘Do not break your oath,’ and ‘Keep your vows to Adonai.’[Matthew 5:33 Leviticus 19:12; Numbers 30:3(2); Deuteronomy 23:22(21)] 34 But I tell you not to swear at all — not ‘by heaven,’ because it is God’s throne; 35 not ‘by the earth,’ because it is his footstool;[Matthew 5:35 Isaiah 66:1] and not ‘by Yerushalayim,’ because it is the city of the Great King.[Matthew 5:35 Psalm 48:3(2)] 36 And don’t swear by your head, because you can’t make a single hair white or black. 37 Just let your ‘Yes’ be a simple ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ a simple ‘No’; anything more than this has its origin in evil.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary: Matthew 5:21-37
Verse 21
[21] Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
Ye have heard — From the scribes reciting the law; Thou shalt do no murder - And they interpreted this, as all the other commandments, barely of the outward act.
The judgement — The Jews had in every city a court of twenty-three men, who could sentence a criminal to be strangled. But the sanhedrim only (the great council which sat at Jerusalem, consisting of seventy-two men,) could sentence to the more terrible death of stoning. That was called the judgment, this the council. Exodus 20:13.
Verse 22
[22] But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
But I say unto you — Which of the prophets ever spake thus? Their language is, Thus saith the Lord. Who hath authority to use this language, but the one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy.
Whosoever is angry with his brother — Some copies add, without a cause - But this is utterly foreign to the whole scope and tenor of our Lord's discourse. If he had only forbidden the being angry without a cause, there was no manner of need of that solemn declaration, I say unto you; for the scribes and Pharisees themselves said as much as this. Even they taught, men ought not to be angry without a cause. So that this righteousness does not exceed theirs. But Christ teaches, that we ought not, for any cause, to be so angry as to call any man Raca, or fool. We ought not, for any cause, to be angry at the person of the sinner, but at his sins only. Happy world, were this plain and necessary distinction thoroughly understood, remembered, practised! Raca means, a silly man, a trifler.
Whosoever shall say, Thou fool — Shall revile, or seriously reproach any man. Our Lord specified three degrees of murder, each liable to a sorer punishment than the other: not indeed from men, but from God.
Hell fire — In the valley of Hinnom (whence the word in the original is taken) the children were used to be burnt alive to Moloch. It was afterward made a receptacle for the filth of the city, where continual fires were kept to consume it. And it is probable, if any criminals were burnt alive, it was in this accursed and horrible place. Therefore both as to its former and latter state, it was a fit emblem of hell. It must here signify a degree of future punishment, as much more dreadful than those incurred in the two former cases, as burning alive is more dreadful than either strangling or stoning.
Verse 23
[23] Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
Thy brother hath aught against thee — On any of the preceding accounts: for any unkind thought or word: any that did not spring from love.
Verse 24
[24] Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
Leaving thy gift, go — For neither thy gift nor thy prayer will atone for thy want of love: but this will make them both an abomination before God.
Verse 25
[25] Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
Agree with thine adversary — With any against whom thou hast thus offended: while thou art in the way - Instantly, on the spot; before you part.
Lest the adversary deliver thee to the judge — Lest he commit his cause to God. Luke 12:58.
Verse 26
[26] Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
Till thou hast paid the last farthing — That is, for ever, since thou canst never do this. What has been hitherto said refers to meekness: what follows, to purity of heart.
Verse 27
[27] Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
Thou shalt not commit adultery — And this, as well as the sixth commandment, the scribes and Pharisees interpreted barely of the outward act. Exodus 20:14. 29, 30. If a person as dear as a right eye, or as useful as a right hand, cause thee thus to offend, though but in heart. Perhaps here may be an instance of a kind of transposition which is frequently found in the sacred writings: so that the 29th verse may refer to 27, 28; and the 30th to verse 21, 22. Matthew 5:29,27,28,30,21,22 As if he had said, Part with any thing, however dear to you, or otherwise useful, if you cannot avoid sin while you keep it. Even cut off your right hand, if you are of so passionate a temper, that you cannot otherwise be restrained from hurting your brother. Pull out your eyes, if you can no otherwise be restrained from lusting after women. Matthew 18:8; Mark 9:43.
Verse 30
[30] And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell..
Verse 31
[31] It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
Let him give her a writing of divorce — Which the scribes and Pharisees allowed men to do on any trifling occasion. Deuteronomy 24:1; Matthew 19:7; Mark 10:2; Luke 16:18.
Verse 32
[32] But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
Causeth her to commit adultery — If she marry again.
Verse 33
[33] Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
Our Lord here refers to the promise made to the pure in heart of seeing God in all things, and points out a false doctrine of the scribes, which arose from their not thus seeing God. What he forbids is, the swearing at all, 1, by any creature, 2, in our ordinary conversation: both of which the scribes and Pharisees taught to be perfectly innocent. Exodus 20:7.
Verse 36
[36] Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
For thou canst not make one hair white or black — Whereby it appears, that this also is not thine but God's.
Verse 37
[37] But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
Let your conversation be yea, yea; nay, nay — That is, in your common discourse, barely affirm or deny.
8:30am in Epworth Lounge
10:30am in the Sanctuary
Special Music: "Ave Maria," sung by our chancel choir; "Yahweh," sung by Angie Tait with the worship band.
"Ave Maria"
1. Ave Maria! Ave Maria! maiden mild!
Listen to a maiden's prayer!
Thou canst hear though from the wild,
Thou canst save amid despair.
Safe may we sleep beneath thy care,
Though banish'd, outcast and reviled -
Maiden! hear a maiden's prayer;
Mother, hear a suppliant child!
Ave Maria!
2. Ave Maria! undefiled!
The flinty couch we now must share
Shall seem this down of eider piled,
If thy protection hover there.
The murky cavern's heavy air
Shall breathe of balm if thou hast smiled;
Then, Maiden! hear a maiden's prayer;
Mother, list a suppliant child!
Ave Maria!
3. Ave Maria! stainless styled!
Foul demons of the earth and air,
From this their wonted haunt exiled,
Shall flee before thy presence fair.
We bow us to our lot of care,
Beneath thy guidance reconciled;
Hear for a maid a maiden's prayer,
And for a father hear a child!
Ave Maria!
"Yahweh"
* Our God He lives forever
He reigns with power and love
Let earth bow down before Him
For He is exalted
We look to Yahweh, Yahweh
Forever Yahweh, Yahweh, oh, yeah
Our hope is God almighty
His love is Greater than all
Lift high the God of heaven
Give all the honor
We look to Yahweh, Yahweh
Our hope is Yahweh, Yahweh, yeah
And He shall reign forever
He shall reign forever
He shall reign forever and ever
And He shall reign forever

He shall reign forever and ever
Our God, yeah
We look to Yahweh, Yahweh
Forever Yahweh, Yahweh
We look to Yahweh, Yahweh
Our hope is Yahweh, Yahweh
We look to Yahweh, Yahweh
Forever Yahweh, Yahweh
And He shall reign forever
He shall reign forever
He shall reign forever and ever
And He shall reign forever
He shall reign forever
He shall reign forever and ever
And He shall reign forever
He shall reign forever
He shall reign forever and ever
And He shall reign forever
He shall reign forever
He shall reign forever and ever
Our God
And He shall reign forever
He shall reign forever
He shall reign forever and ever
And He shall reign forever
He shall reign forever
He shall reign forever and ever

Speaking of our staff, Stephen Hale will be preaching today (2/12) and next week as he eagerly awaits the return of Pastor Molly Vetter from France. We are fortunate to have had such qualified replacements for Molly while she is away.
Talking with Marilyn Smalley about the coming Rummage Sale in March, I was reminded that this time it will be a Saturday only Rummage Sale 8:00 AM to 4 PM. It's OK with me, as I only worked one day anyway (Friday morning). Watch our announcements for time to donate, prepare and operate the major fund raiser for the United Methodist Women of our church. I guess that less volunteers mean less workers, less help to prepare and less selling time. Hope it continues to be a huge success.

Lent begins March 1; we invite you to join us for a special six-week study and sermon series, about what we believe, and why. Walking through the traditional statements of faith that are a part of our Apostles’ Creed, we will have a chance to look closely at what it means (and doesn’t mean) to say we believe. Based on a new book by United Methodist pastor Adam Hamilton, called Creed, this study will be used across all the age levels of our congregation, to open up conversation and deepen our faith.
An Invitation to LEARN and LEAD: Would you consider serving as a leader for a small group during our Lent this year? For the six weeks of Lent, we will invite people to meet together weekly, in small groups, where we will watch a video lesson that goes with the book, and share in conversation together. Would you be willing to lead or help lead one of those small groups?
From March 1 to April 16, your small group could meet at whatever day and time is good for you, either at your home or the church--it would be up to you to choose options that are good.
If you are willing to lead one of the these groups Rev. Nicole invites you to one of two training sessions; you just need to attend the one that works best for you.
The remaining 30-minute training sessions will be:
Sundays, February 12 and 19 after 10:30 worship!
Email the office and let us know which session you will attend.
You can see a little more about the study book here

Milk Needed for Shared Bread
Shared Bread is in need of volunteers to donate and deliver milk to the church each week. You would simply need to stop by the market to purchase 6 gallons of milk and drop it off in the kitchen refrigerator in the area marked. If interested in signing up for a week or more, please Email Karin Yorke or give her a call 323-359 6640.
January 2017 Finance Update
As we begin 2017, we are facing two serious challenges to our budget: We have used almost all of the funds in our Ministerial Support Fund. Also, we ended the 2016 budget year with considerably fewer donations than we had anticipated. Moving into the new year, we project we may have $20,000 fewer in contributions than what we budgeted for last year.
We are looking closely at our budget, to see where we can spend less money. It is my belief that we can trim our expenses without cutting staff or significantly impairing our ability to do the meaningful work of the church. We will be trying some new ways of doing things to save money. We are also inviting you to consider taking a step up in your giving at this moment in the church’s life. This is a time when it would make a clear difference for our congregation to increase your giving to the church.
Even with these challenges that I’ve named, there is so much to celebrate about our generosity. Fifty-three families have already pledged to give more in 2017. This is incredible!
I believe that with $20,000 in additional increased pledged commitments and the same amount of careful reductions in expenses, we could close the gap between our projected income and expenses, while maintaining our incredible staff, meaningful ministry programs and vital worship.
You can submit a pledge of giving online, here.
You can also read more about our church budget at the link above. We are able to do so much together!

“Temperament” is the word used to describe the way a musical scale is tuned – specifically, how many wavelengths apart are the notes C and G, for example. Over the centuries, there have been many ways to tune a scale, many different temperaments, including Meantone, Werkmeister, Pythagorian, and so on. Each temperament produces a unique sound when played, because not all the scales are perfectly “in tune”. For reasons that are too technical to talk about here, in Meantone temperament, the scales of D major and E major are brilliantly in tune, whereas the scales of Eb and Gb are extremely out of tune. "Temperament" is the word used to describe the way a musical scale is tuned – specifically, how many wavelengths apart are the notes C and G, for example. Over the centuries, there have been many ways to tune a scale, many different temperaments, including Meantone, Werkmeister, Pythagorian, and so on. Each temperament produces a unique sound when played, because not all the scales are perfectly "in tune". For reasons that are too technical to talk about here, in Meantone temperament, the scales of D major and E major are brilliantly in tune, whereas the scales of Eb and Gb are extremely out of tune. Furthermore, every organ builder had a different theory about how the instrument should be tuned once built. So, an organ tuned to Meantone couldn't play pieces of music in Eb or Gb. For years, composers yearned for a temperament that would allow them to write in any key without tuning issues. "Equal temperament" is a temperament that is generally accepted to have been designed by Zhu Zaiyu, a prince in the Chinese Ming court, who solved the tuning mathematically in 1584. Equal temperament became more and more accepted over the years, with composer Girolamo Frescobaldi being a strong advocate. In essence, all the scales can be played, due to the compromise that all the scales are equally slightly out of tune. In 1722, J.S. Bach wrote a book of keyboard music titled Das Wohltemperirte Clavier, or The Well-Tempered Clavier ("clavier" being a word used to describe pretty much any keyboard instrument), designed to show off the flexibility of the scale. The first piece in that book was the Prelude and Fugue in C Major. The prelude is a delightful piece that most young pianists learn because it's relatively easy to play. In 1853, French composer Charles Gounod improvised a melody overtop of the prelude, and his future father-in-law, Pierre-Joseph-Guillaume Zimmerman, wrote it down, then created an arrangement for violin with piano and harmonium (pump organ). In 1859, Jacques Leopold Heugel published a version with the familiar Latin Ave Maria text, which is the version we all know today.
On September 26, 1976, 14 year old Larry Mullen, Jr. placed a note on the bulletin board of Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin, Ireland, looking for members to form a band. 6 people responded. They began as Feedback, performing covers of other artists' music, then in 1977 changed their name to The Hype with 5 members. In March of 1978, they phased out their fifth man and changed their name to U2, playing their own original material. Their 1st big break came when they won a competition on St. Patrick's Day, 1978, which provided them with the opportunity to record a demo that would be heard by CBS Ireland, a record label. Since then U2 has gone on to release 13 studio albums and have become one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, selling over 170 million albums worldwide. They have won 22 Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Rolling Stone ranked U2 as 22nd on their list of "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".
Their song Yahweh was released in 2004 on the album How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. The song was recorded in one take, with Bono improvising the vocals spontaneously during the recording. The original vocal take by Bono was so inspiring that it took the song in a whole different direction from the song The Edge had originally planned, and the first take was kept. The band decided that "it was one of those songs that had to be written." They performed it live throughout their 2005-2006 Vertigo Tour, although the song received mixed reviews from the critics.
This week, we welcome our own Angie Tait to the mike to sing Yahweh for us. Next week, Will Martens will be singing Michael Jackson's Man In The Mirror. Don't miss it!

Support missions through recycling!
Bring your plastic bottles, aluminum cans AND CRV glass bottles to church every Sunday. By recycling we can support Corazon, Crop Walk, Habitat for Humanity and some of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) programs: Syrian refugee relief, eradicating hunger, clean water, ending malaria and fighting HIV/AIDS. Please bring your cans and bottles.

We have many spots to fill for liturgists on Sunday mornings. The following link will take you the sign up. Please check it out.
