Here are the highlights from this week's news in family caregiving:
The Washington Post | February 8, 2017
"Expansive benefits for new parents have overshadowed the many caregiving responsibilities of other workers. Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg announced that employees at the social media giant will now receive up to 20 days of bereavement leave in the event of a family member's death, six weeks of paid leave to care for an ill relative and three days of paid family sick time to help out with a short-term illness."
Science Daily | February 9, 2017
"Since 1990, the divorce rate among adults 50 years and older has doubled. This trend, along with longer life expectancy, has resulted in many adults forming new partnerships later in life. A new phenomenon called 'Living Apart Together' (LAT)-an intimate relationship without a shared residence-is gaining popularity as an alternative form of commitment. The trend is lesser known in the U.S. This means that challenges, such as how LAT partners can engage in family caregiving or decision-making, could affect family needs."
Kaiser Health News | February 9, 2017
"Home health agencies will be required to become more responsive to patients and their caregivers under the first major overhaul of rules governing these organizations in almost 30 years. The federal regulations strengthen patients' rights considerably and call for caregivers to be informed and engaged in plans for patients' care."
Forbes | February 7, 2017
"We are facing an extraordinary demographic shift that will create new challenges for our society and demand new policy solutions. Each day, 10,000 boomers turn 65 and over the next 30 years, the population of older adults will nearly double - growing from 48 million to 88 million, with the largest percentage increase among those 85 and older. This shift will profoundly impact families all across America."
